While we often focus on the Arkham series, when it comes to Batman, there are some other hidden gems out there. Today, we're taking a look at Batman the Telltale Series, specifically, the first game. The game is a story-driven experience that really focuses on the Bruce Wayne side of Batman. Selina Kyle (Catwoman) also plays a significant role in the story, along with other characters such as Harvey Dent, Carmine Falcone, Alfred Pennyworth, Oswald Cobblepot and Vicki Vale. Responding to "the Lady Arkham being a pre-established member of the lore" criticism, the reason TT Batman doesn't get shit as opposed to Rocksteady is the former said in interviews a fair amount of times this Batman would be an original take with familiar and not so familiar things (heck Penguin is around Bruce's age in this incarnation). Meanwhile Rocksteady lied point blank and said AK was a brand new character because they knew it was obvious who it was.

True. In fact Joker's motives and his relationship with Bruce/Batman makes more sense. Like in the vigilante storyline he is somewhat influence by Bruce/Batman to bring justice only he is much more brutal and violent than Batman and that's what makes him dangerous and unpredictable more so than Lady Arkham and Two-Face. As for the villain Joker depending on the player choice he's a deranged criminal mastermind who wants to ruin Bruce's life the way he felt he ruined his life, and to create as much chaos as possible while proving that friendships can be a poison sort of similar to the killing joke's Joker's philosophy that all it takes is one bad day to drive the saneist man mad.

But yes, the focus should be on newer things, Batman or not. Then again it's a whole game company, that could spare a team or two to lip sync a few scenes properly and probably finish patching the game

"The Pact" was great in the second game, but I would really love in the third game to have multiple villains that aren't necessarily connected. I liked how, in the first one, Two-Face and Penguin were both threats despite not working together. I'd like to see Scarecrow and Poison Ivy (hell, you could make PI a love interest like Catwoman to make that side of things more complicated) with the "Bruce Villain" being Black Mask (make him more of a corrupt industrialist than an outright supervillain, maybe he tries to buy out Wayne Enterprises or just makes them obsolete).

Okay, I kinda disagree with the Lady Arkham point. Basic revenge story is accurate, but I don’t think it’s handled that badly. If the Wayne family had just offed her family, then this would be alittle over the top. But the Wayne family had been doing this to multiple people, friends and randoms alike. Not just the Arkhams. And instead of being punished for it, the public seemed to praise them for it and call them the leaders of Gotham (only because they didn’t know what was going on, but we have to look at it from Lady Arkham’s perspective). And while the child of the Wayne family, some corrupt multimillionaire home, was living lavishly, Lady Arkham, lost her parents, and her new parents abused her and other kids. In her mind, all the good people were trampled on, and all the bad people got to go places in life. And I think her suit fits her mentality pretty well. She was abused at a really young age. The mask is reminiscent of like a stick figure that most kids draw when making their first person. So while it’s not the most visually appealing (especially compared to ANY of the villains in season 2), I feel like it shows how she hasn’t moved on, just like how Bruce dons his dark knight persona for his parents. My only gripes with her is that there’s no way you can afford gravitational boots and bo staff lessons that rival Batman on a reporters salary

I feel like the second game remedied a lot of these issues. The combat was much more tailored to be full of options and were way more engaging, the villains were done very well, and I felt like the story in that game could be dramatically different based on how you play it. Hell, the 4th and 5th episodes practically had 2 versions of themselves.

Since they gave a lot of Hush characteristics to the Penguin, it might be complicated to pull it off... childhood friend of Bruce, coming from another old rich Gothamite family that lost its power/money, betrays Bruce and steals his company from him (like Tommy did in "Hush Money"), etc etc...

I mean, I've seen a lot of fans wishing that it would be Tommy, but they were the first to admit that there was no proof or even clues, just wishful thinking on their part. My main complaint is how they were not very creative with the quick time events or the quick time event fails. I was hoping for a system similar to the Spider-Man 3 game where if u miss a button it would show the hero dying or getting hurt whereas in this u can pretty much just put down the controller and Batman will do the quick time events anyway. Not sure if anyone else feels the same as me.

I will say if you could plan out your moves ahead of time in every battle encounter, it could lean WAY harder into the "Be the Batman you want to be" thing. Like having very brutal options, having very efficient options, sloppy options, and not so brutal options, and it could effect how the people think of you or how people think criminals should be delt with.

For me the biggest thing wrong with this game was graphical bugs because either characters were in focus or not, or there was no audio sometimes and Jim Gordon’s cigarette smoke was this unrendered white blocks coming from it

James Codeline honestly, comparing those two do not make sense. Batman Arkham series is more of the comic lore of Batman. While Telltale Batman is simplify it’s own series with Batman lore but written. This is game series is basically fan Fiction. While Arkham series is more Canon to the comics.

I don't really feel the problem here with Lady Arkham. Was she remarkable or game changing like Phantasm or court of owls? No. But even though this is not set in exactly YEAR ONE, it is our origin of THIS Batman and I'm glad they didn't roll out the red carpet of super villains from the jump. I think the first Batman story should always have some down to earth villains. This one nails that with Carmine Falcone, Penguin, and Lady Arkham. She also does a real good job of confronting the whole "who is Bruce Wayne really?" Theme this whole season went for. She attacks Bruce while not being able to understand why Batman is "protecting" him. I think all the villains in this season were serviceable to the story had no problems with any of them and think they fit pretty well. My only gripe is the continuous over reliance on Joker. Imo Joker should be kept FAR away for a bit until Batman is fully established. Joker will ALWAYS be there, like that story is ready to go whenever. I imagine TT couldn't afford to have a dud so Joker was there for insurance to make sure people ended up getting the game but still there are so many more villains to fully explore, though I don't exactly mind the whole John Doe twist. If you're gonna throw Joker in at least they did something different with him.

With the release of the Shadow Edition, the Classic Edition got a ton of new glitches. They fixed Bruce’s broken neck and the black spasms during the Crime Alley scenes, but I played through the Classic again and I’m sending the new developers all these new glitches for some patches to be made hopefully

You touched upon this a bit in the last reason. But in the game (which could apply to any Telltale game) every single choice don't really matter. Or at least the choices doesn't vary by much. The game plays out how it wants.

So am I the only one that actually really digged Lady Arkham? A shame the game didn't let you establish a more closer connection to Vicki so the the ultimate betrayal actually hit harder. I loved both Batman Telltale games, the first one moreso because I love Batman vs. the mob or things that feel more street level (obviously it later grows to something bigger) so I would love to see a third Arkham game that goes through Dick Grayson's origin. Bruce takes him in, and returns/is Batman trying to take down Tony Zucco while also having to look after Dick who is sneaking out at night and often running into Batman (similiar to Dick's New 52 origin) before Bruce brings him into the fold. Halfway through the game maybe Two-Face would break out and go after Bruce (since Two-Face is the Robin trial by fire villain) and Dick helps Batman save the day and the game would end with Dick training to become Robin. Or I would have Batman discover the Court of Owls after taking down Zucco and the Court wants Dick Grayson to become a Talon and Bruce has to fight to protect him and Gotham from some other plan ig since these games seem to evolve into "all of Gotham finna go down unless Batman saves the day."

I have a mixed perspective on the whole “your choices don’t matter” thing. The majority of Telltale Games do it like the Kara chapters of Detroit. Your choices can shift visual details and minor events. That’s it as far as the obvious goes. It’s the relationships between characters that actually change. But aside from that, you don’t have any real control until the very end. Even then, certain events that want to play out will play out. Regardless of your input. All and all, I feel like Quantic handled the choice mechanic much better. But where they’re adapting and getting better at it. Telltale just never learned from their mistakes.

The engine that telltale was using was the telltale tool and it had been outdated for years by that point and it was super glitchy, if u have ever played Twd or wolf among us u will know what I mean, telltale was making a new engine before they went out of business

Talking about bugs, I had a character who was completely invisible so I had no idea they were even in the room until the screen cut to me making a dialogue choice to them and I had no idea who the fuck they were. In Enemy Within, when you're in the car with Harley for the first time driving to Wayne Tower it took me almost the entire car ride for me to realize that I was supposed to see through the windows, there was nothing there, just gray and apparently, I missed something funny.

Even beyond the top 5 here (which I mostly agree with -- btw, GotG has some significant ending changes, so much so that I can't figure out how they were ever planning to write a sequel), I would rank The Penguin as the top ball dropped. Once again, the writers decide to do something daring and different, but they change the character so much (making him a very weak Anarky character in effect, crossed with the Cobblepot family) that there's literally no reason to call him the Penguin. They have to make his gas mask (used for one important scene) look like a weird pale crow, for no clear reason at all that I can recall, and out of nowhere THAT'S supposed to be why he's called the Penguin. Has no one in Gotham ever once seen a penguin? Why would anyone anywhere look at that and think "penguin"?? What he's doing in the plot is fine enough (so far as I recall), but what's the point of even using his character if you intentionally jettison so much that you're left having to ad hoc a reason to have him be nicknamed the Penguin -- and then the reason makes less than no sense for that purpose? (Not you, of course, I mean the writers and/or producers.) Just have him be an entirely new villain persona like, ahem, "Arkham". Or make him this story's version of Anarky for the twist. Again, I wouldn't be surprised if that was in fact the original plan and somewhere along the line someone paying the bills insisted that he has to be "the Penguin".

I would've mapped each button to a core attack during fights, letting the player choose how to attack. And maybe it would have a few bad options in certain scenarios. Like O shit, that attack hit him way too hard and now he's falling out of a 2 story window. You catch the thug but Falcone is gone by the time you get back to the roof. It also would have given you more options for that whole brutal or lawful Batman angle they were going for

The main bugs I got were the cop lady being onvisible in the section where I got to her after Harvey and a really annoying bug wherebmassive thick lines of pure white would come out of Gordon's cigarettes EVERY DAMN TIME he had one. Other than that, minor crap that didn't matter. The biggest sin is the option to let Alfred lose an entire eye and feel like he is a shit butler because of it. You only lose a part of your ear as the alternative Alfred, actually is affected by a choice that ultimately comes to nothing more than: Did you lose some skin or did Alfred end up half blind? Because the reveal doesn't mean anything. Also, on the note of QTEs always sucking, yeah most of them do, but if you play Metal Gear Rising:Revengeance, you will realise that they can be amazing, but almost noone does them right.

You can NOT compare these 2 games to the Arkham series... they are both Batman properties but they are on opposite sides of the spectrum. The Arkham series are open world action adventure games and the telltale series are linear story based games. It is like comparing the bat mobile and the bat computer! FFS

Lady Arkham wasn't as poorly received as Arkham Knight because Telltale didn't go around spouting that she was a completely orignal character like Rocksteady did. And with the combat. It's a Telltale game. Not arkham. The game is story focused with cinematic scenes with fights, not a super advanced combat system like the Arkham series. Comparing the two in combat is really, really unfair. You can find the combat in the game uninteresting, I'm not saying that you can't have issues with the game. But comparing it to a different game that is in a different genre is a dumb comparison.

Also, the publicity for Telltale Batman kept most of its story under wraps, so we didn't even know about Lady Arkham (or even Penguin), so there was less manufactured hype than with Arkham Knight. Finally, the Lady Arkham reveal actually surprised a lot of people, while Arkham Knight was so, so OBVIOUS.

I actually loved Lady Arkham yeah while she wasn't the best villain I was personally surprised she was the big bad. The penguin was already a compelling villain alongside Harvey(John Doe too). While basic Lady Arkham was a surprise to me to who she was and maybe because it was my first batman game and the wanye storyline had me so invested but her villain outfit is terrible tho

But remember this is the first year of Batman's career, so of course at this point he ain't the all powerful batman yet, he still is vunerable to drugs and stuff. Heck, even in the comics batman took venom so it kinda doesn't matter. And besides, no matter how much you train your mind and body drugs can still affect you no matter what.

I agree about cat woman always leaving. I did and tried everything and the best I could do was get a kiss from her before she left. I enjoy story based games like this but that sucks that she leaves no matter what

The graphic bugs have all been fixed on the mobile version (the graphic quality downgraded tho). Also I like Lady Arkham tbh. She was born in Arkham because of Thomas Wayne (imagine growing up in an asylum it must be really traumatizing), then got adopted by a family that didn't give two shits about her and basically tortured her in a tiny chamber in their basement. And this whole thing wasn't only against the Waynes, she wanted the whole city to feel her wrath. I agree with what you said about her design tho. It felt refreshing having another villain than the Joker, Riddler, Bane, Harley Quinn and co.

I'm 50 50 with this video lady Arkham was great , the graphic glitches are annoying , the combat was ok , the story adapting thing would definitely need a upgrade , the detective stuff was good 50 percent good the other bad .

In my opinion, lady Arkham was just a pointless addition. You could EASILY replace her with Scarecrow and you wouldn’t tell the difference. Is the writing still gonna be bad? Sure. But it makes more sense.

Well I’m guessing the reason nobody got mad at the Lady Arkham Identity reveal is because the developers didn’t outright lie that they were a completely original character. Lady Arkham’s story was also not a complete copy of a much better story arc either, like say what you will about but it is at least a somewhat original idea unlike the Arkham Knight basically being a weaker retread of the red hood storyline

QTE combat -- I was able to tolerate it, except that the design was often botched: the game gets you used to expecting to do such-n-such under certain situations and then switches up the expected inputs to something significantly different that also happens to be counter-intuitive to what in fact happens. I don't often curse games, but I got to the point of cussing the QTE combat several times every episode.
