The only thing that disappointed me with the Joker was that the vigilante path, which is obviously a lot more unique and the path I prefer, felt way less personal than the villain path.

I think that's probably due to vigilante Joker being more fixated on Batman, whereas villain Joker is more focused on Bruce. I personally like the duality.

Disagree even tho I love both paths. The last part in Vigilante where he asks if he really thought as him as a true friend was very emotional and gets me everytime I replay. Plus Bruce visiting him in Arkham is just to wholesome (No its not Hush)

I honestly kinda get the reason why Joker's path diverges on whether you take his word at the scene with the dead agents. Because to him, if you take his word here, it tells him that you're really his friend and that you genuinely care about him. But if you don't, it tells him that you don't trust him, which more than likely reinforces his fears that you were never truly his friend. After all, while there is evidence that suggests what he did was well beyond self defense, he also has a reasonable explanation for it: that in the heat of the moment, he panicked and admittedly went too far. Keep in mind that I think this is the first time you really see him an any direct physical confrontation where he didn't have someone else to rely on, so being panicked and going too far in that situation makes sense, especially given what we see from him later on both paths. It's ultimately whether you believe in his claim of accidentally going too far in that dangerous situation that determines his path because in his head, that's you telling him whether or not you're actually his friend. That's why I think both versions of Joker's final choice in epsiode five are him calling back to that idea: whether you truly thought of him as a friend or were just using him the whole time.

Indeed, he’s not an anonymous agent of chaos or mob boss with vaudeville gadgets and a full body tattoo. He’s John, telltale Bruce’s new best friend, and the player’s anakin skywalker. The game gave options to screw John over at points and I couldn’t press them even knowing it was hopeless. Which was more than what I could say for Selina but I have complicated views on Batman’s love life and I found the possibility of preventing John and Harvey’s turn to the dark side more interesting

Agreed. This take on Joker was such a refreshing and fascinating take on Joker that it subverts a lot of prejudgments about this Joker and what you would expect; honestly, this Joker is one of my favourite takes on the character in general. His innocent naivety, wholesome friendship with Bruce, and fanboy love for Batman were endearing. In contrast, Joker is usually an evil, merciless agent of chaos; this Joker felt like someone who was on the verge of said chaos but was anchored down by his friendship and devoted love for Bruce and Harley, clearly having severe mental conditions that could allow him to snap at any moment. Watching John's downfall, even as a vigilante or a villain, is just heartbreaking to watch since we care about John and don't want to see him become the Joker we all know.

Certainly got to agree that with The Enemy Within, it felt like it was the first time since TWD Season 1 that the choices within a Telltale game ACTUALLY mattered. Especially considering that they went as far as having two entirely different takes on Episode 5 depending on how you treated John Doe/Joker. Though even so the game does still have the flaw of inconsistency given the portrayals of some of the cast, but I mainly attribute that to Telltale having a regime change half way through TEW’s development since the board finally realised that their strategy of buying expensive IPs to make more of the same type of game hoping that said IPs (like Batman, GotG, Minecraft, GoT, etc) alone would be enough to get folks to buy wasn’t working at all. With the second half of TEW & TWD’s Final Season symbolising a return to their past innovation in storytelling, but ultimately a return that was too late to save the company before it went bankrupt and closed down.
@intergalactic92
@intergalactic92 10 ай бұрын
If anything I’d say TWD season 1's choices matter the least out of any of them. It was simply their first go at it so everything felt fresh. The thing is that all the games are linear so for any choice you make which branches out, the narrative has to redirect it back towards the direction it wants to go, and you cannot control that. Telltale Games are an excellent example of creating the illusion of choice. Your choices rarely make much of a difference to the narrative, but the games present them in such a way that you can be tricked into thinking they are important. Where it falls down is when you realise it doesn’t matter and the illusion of choice is broken. TWD was simply the first game and so we hadn’t spotted the pattern yet.

While Riddler is quite well written in this series, I do have one issue: he is written as if he was Anarky, same rebelious and anti establishment attitude, same goals, similar methods, even the iconic hood, and I personally would have LOVED to see Anarky instead of Riddler stealing his MO tbh, he would imo be a far better fit thematically. Also, great video as always:)

In regards to the pivotal scene with Joker in the funhouse, if there is any truth to what happened, I imagine it’s somewhere in the middle. It would make sense that due to his social ineptitude, he’d misinterpret the Agency’s intentions, and believe his life is in mortal danger, even if it’s not. I like how the actual truth of the situation doesn’t really matter. Your decision in that scene is likely based on how you perceive John, and what you believe his intentions are. Despite how much good there is in the villain path, I’ve always chosen the vigilante route. Despite his quirks, and his tendency to violence, I always saw John as having genuine good within him. It brings me to a point that I rarely see people discuss, and that’s the subtitle of the game, “The Enemy Within.” There’s a lot of ways you could interpret that title. Is it talking about Bruce’s role in the Pact? Is it talking about John’s relationship with Bruce? In my opinion, I think the most likely answer is that it is in reference to John’s mental illness. He describes feeling like there’s something within him that’s like an animal in a cage. The enemy within is the Joker side of his personality, so to speak. In the villain ending, he just lets it loose, while in the vigilante ending, you really see him holding himself back, trying to live up to your expectations of him, until he finally can’t take it anymore. Villain Joker is a great antagonist, but when Vigilante Joker finally snaps, it’s downright terrifying. He’s not even acting out of malice at that point. Bruce is watching him have a genuine psychotic episode, where he has lost the ability to communicate aside from laughter. It really goes to show that no matter what Batman does, he can’t save everyone. He did everything he possibly could for John, but still couldn’t stop him from becoming Joker. It even echoes the beginning of the game a bit, as the game Riddler played with Batman and the agents was to prove to him that he can’t save everyone. It’s fitting that since the game is based around your choices, it ultimately tells you, and by extension Batman, that you can’t have it all. There’s always a cost.
@intergalactic92
@intergalactic92 10 ай бұрын
It is genuinely unsettling when he completely loses it in the Vigilante path. It’s at that point you realise his journey was never complete. You thought you had wooded him into better version of himself, in fact you had simply delayed his decent into madness. By the end he is the same insane Joker he was always going to be, and there was nothing you could do to truly stop it. Which makes it all the more tragic.

One thing I liked about this game was that Harley is actually a dangerous villain who is much less goofy, after seeing Suicide Squad, Harley Quinn show, James Gunn suicide squad, and Suicide Squad Kill the justice league I have been completely sick of the character being a goofball all the time and never getting a villain spotlight. Telltale did a great job making you understand Harley's motivation with how scared of death she was and how she was willing to do anything to avoid it. I hope in the future we see more Harley Quinn's that are more than just a comedic figure in fiction.

i always felt is not about beliving the evidences around you to trust John, the "i believe you" is more (for me at least) "i know you got crazy, i know you didn't only act in self defence, i see all the evidences around me... but you're my friend John, i care for you, i belive you an i belive in you, i believe what you say and i believe you can be better"
@intergalactic92
@intergalactic92 10 ай бұрын
That’s my thought as well. It isn’t whether you "believe" him or not, it’s whether you trust him or not. You know he probably did go too far here, but that really isn’t the point, it’s whether you're willing to give him another chance, whether you want to help him or turn your back on him.

@@intergalactic92 I was as lawful as possible. Bruce made an oath as Batman. Vigilante is a dirty job that can be enabling. I believe Jonh had his reasons. But his clinical issues can become problematic. He needs to understand that reality. I don't regret having done it. In real life that's how most react. And in the comics, Bruce can be a hard judge of character, particularly after Harvey's incident.
@uckbritley1305
@uckbritley1305 10 ай бұрын
@@JabamiLainVery interesting. I can see why someone would want to be as "Batman" as possible. Me? I roleplayed Bruce Wayne as a complete sociopath due to his trauma throughout both seasons. He only started acting 'softer' when John literally forced his way into being friends with him. It felt a lot more fulfilling for that version of Bruce to come to terms with not being a brutalistic nigh-psycho who shuts off all attempts at relationships. Plus Alfred got a cool eyepatch. Not the story arc telltale intended to tell. But a very satisfying one I interpretated with my own actions nonetheless. That experience alone made this one of my favorite telltale games.
@JabamiLain
@JabamiLain 10 ай бұрын
@@uckbritley1305 that actually makes for a very cool alternative take on the caped crusader. He doesn't kill and tries to have his life under control, but the cracks become more notiçable the more he experiences. I admit my take wasn't the most original (aside from keeping Harvey from getting half his face burned), but I think it finally taught me to understand the true self control Batman tries to inspire: -Tiffany was grieving, and had only killed a person who could be argued to have deserved. She was in control of her actions, so she could still be saved. And Selina didn't have the same opportunities as Bruce, but she did the best she could with the hand she had; -Jonh and Harvey were mentally unstable. Self control was harder for them, which is why they needed to be put in environments without access to power or enabling means. Because self control is not something that can last forever within a person. And if they want to be part of society, they need to understand there might be things they need to approach differently, but it doesn't mean they'll be worse for it. Many people require help one way or another. But I understand why they may not see it that way.

While short-lived, this game still had an interesting take on Riddler and while he wasn't anywhere near as great as the Riddler from the Arkham games, it was still fun. I found the approach of making him much older interesting but I wouldn't say it's my favourite take on the character. To me Riddler is defined by his insanity, inferiority complex, violent behaviour and intense narcissism, likened with hubris. He is supposed to be extremely emotionally immature and his nature is that of an overgrown man-child. Wally Wingert who voiced the character in all four Arkham games always delivered such an incredible performance that always managed to perfectly capture Riddler's obsessive personality, massive ego and superiority complex and to me his portrayal is the definitive depiction of Riddler. It's honestly his voice I hear in my head when I read comics with Riddler.

I like the choice of making Riddler older too, and I also agree with Arkham Riddler being the definitive protrayal. I feel like other medias try to him what he isn't, not to mention that there are countless 'Anti-Batman' characters, to the point; where it's not even interesting anymore.

Honestly my favorite Telltale season. The anxiety that builds through the whole season not only pays off but pays off in a way that you almost NEED to play it again. I played it alone the first time then the second time with my cousin. We had both picked vigilante Joker in our first run and had planned to pick full Joker just to see what happened but the story was just so fucking good we couldn’t help but pick vigilante Joker again. It genuinely hurt to intentionally push John towards the worst version of himself. I would be elated if we ever got a season 3 but I don’t know if it could even live up to season 2.

23:03 You don't actually need to side against John in this scene to determine whether or not he becomes the villain. If you choose to believe him and let him go along with you to the bridge, you can eventually side with Waller when it looks like John is getting a little TOO friendly with Harley during the negotiations. This gives John a much more personal and believable reason to descend into the villain persona. I also think the whole bridge sequence works much better with Bruce rather than Batman anyways, so it gets bonus points in my book.

I find myself torn about how Riddler is used in this. On one hand I love how important he is, everything is driven by his actions and backstory, I love his design and his interplay with Batman. I do really like the implication that he is a vigilante gone bad and this is a dark path that Batman could take if he doesn’t stay on the straight and narrow (I am certain that this is what they were going for). But equally, I hate the fact he dies. In essence it’s the same old trope that comes up time and again. No matter how much the Riddler is presented as a major villain the practical impact is minor. He always gets pushed to the side so that other, flashier villains, can shine instead. What we did get was great, but it’s now a narrative dead end. They can never do anything like this again or do more interesting battles, because he is dead. Not unless they want to introduce his daughter as a new Riddler.

Jokers path of becoming a villain through distrusting him makes total sense to me. A large reason why he wants to be a vigilante is so he can express that violent, explosive, and showman part of himself and be adored for it. It’s a large reason he adores Batman. However, that means he also wants to be forgiven and still loved even when he does so violent acts. That’s his goal. Bruce not trusting him when he very obviously went overboard shatters that dream of his violent side still being loved by the public and by Bruce, thus removing his motivation on being good in the first place. Loved this video, such an underrated story and fresh take on the Batman characters!! 💕💕

I always loved the villain ending because of how much more it feels like John Doe. It sounds a little weird, but.. it's like the vigilante ending was John trying to force himself to fit into Batman's shoes, down to the fact that his own outfit and weapons are unoriginally taken from Batman. He's constantly struggling to be who you want him to be, and those more violent sides to him keep slipping out down to his breaking point near the end. But with the Joker ending.. it's like we get to see him in a form that seems to feel right to him. He's comfortable in who he is when he isn't trying to be who you want him to be, but who you "need" him to be as Batman -- a villain who you have to stop. He plays the role in a much more enjoyable and authentic way, because he's finally confident. And the cracks that we see in that feel more deserved -- you see his good side slip through in the decisions he makes, like when he gives Gordon the bomb locations behind Harley's back, which essentially tears apart her entire plan to poison the city and find the one person who survives and can give her a cure. It feels a lot more complete of a story to be able to still see John Doe in the Joker, to understand how important that friendship was to Bruce, and to know that Batman couldn't be without the Joker.

I prefer Villain path too, because I imagine after Harvey, he'd have a harder time trusting morally grey people (in fact, that's how he develops most of his trust issues in the comics), and because in that ending, more virus is created, so Freeze might still have a chance at saving his wife. In short, you're right, it feels more realistic to the arc of both characters.

It adds that slght bit of tention for me whenever i see other people play the bridge scene.

I also can't see Jim Gordon getting pissy that Batman won't throw out due process to go violate a suspect's rights based on nothing but a hunch, nor only persuing a criminal to spite Batman. Like, if Batman hadn't pissed Jim off, would Gordon have just not gone after Catwoman, the wanted thief, in the first place? Still, he does deliver one of my favorite lines in the game. "She knows who I am, Jim." "Oh yeah?! Well, so do I! You're Batman! That's all you ever have to be, that's all Gotham needs you to be! @rudrapatel285

Probably a big reason for episode 5 being 2 completely different episodes is because telltale was under so much heat that the choices didn't matter and people saw through it easily, because of this telltale was near getting shutdown but that didn't start until Development of the final twd season. Telltale probably saw this and made a bold last ditch effort to please the fans, and have some sort of saving grace, and based on how differently episode 5 ends depending on the both joker endings, the episode ends in 5-6 different ways. There is no way old telltale could've followed up this ending with season 3 if there was ever going to be one, unless they actually considered all seemingly major choices to effect the story which would result in a larger dev cycle and complicated branching. Time will tell what the new telltale can do whenever wolf among us 2 comes out.

I prefer Villain, because I imagine after Harvey, he'd have a harder time trusting grey people (in fact, that's how he develops most of his trust issues in the comics), and because in that ending, more virus is created, so Freeze might still have a chance at saving his wife.

I really like this game, this was the first dc thing that made me interested in Batman and his villains. I especially love John Doe in this series and the Vigilante Joker version. From the start he's like a newbie trying to find his place in the world so he acts like the people he loves/likes, specifically Harley and Bruce. They both influence his personality and view on the world and people. I absolutely loved how they managed to make Joker a kind of Robin in this. He got his sense of justice and ideals from Bruce and Batman's point of view but he's taken it into extreme given his mental states. But he's still lost a bit, struggles all the time. For me the friendship between Bruce and John is the best thing about this game. And the good ending when Bruce svisits John in Akrham, the fact that he still considers John a good friend despite everything that happened was really heartwarming. Best duo ever.

As Batman, Bruce made an oath. I couldn't just break it for my convenience. Justice has some standards. For its efficiency, me, my allies and friends must try to meet them as much as possible.

My favourite was the vigilante Joker path because it was so new and different, with Joker actively figuring Bruce and Batman were the same person. That was a huge wham to me, after so many comics and so forth where his identity never was of interest to the Joker deep down. The final battle for me was one of the best because of how horribly beaten the two are by the end. I loved the ending with me keeping the friendship going and John's elation at Bruce visiting him. And redeeming Tiffany by making her my sidekick for "community service". Fantastic goddamn game. Wish we had a third! Hush or something could be a cool villain. "Joker"path was just him hating Bruce for not believing something that was pretty difficult to believe. Just saying.

This is why Vigilante is such an interesting route to take, because it has never been done before. The Villain path is exactly what you would expect. It’s exactly what every Joker is like in every piece of media. Vigilante Joker is a delve into the unexplored, what if Joker was good/well meaning. Still an opponent to chase but a more complex one, more morally ambiguous.
@JabamiLain

@@intergalactic92 I know it's the most expected outcome, but I feel like it's the most realistic approach at someone with Jonh's issues, especially if back in the first game, you choose to stay on Harvey's side as much as possible, only to end disappointed anyway.

I haven’t played the second season, so I’m not sure if this would contradict the story, but I think a good consequence for choosing to leave Harley behind would have been for her to get arrested by the authorities, and the standoff to be between Bane and Bruce, as even if it didn’t get the Pact to trust you any better, Bane might be impressed the Bruce was able to hold his own against him, and even build up to a fight against him as Batman later down the line, and possibly Bane starting to hypothesize that Bruce and Batman are the same person. I apologize for the run on sentence. Also, is it just me, or does Jim Gordon look a little bit like Hush in this series? To close off this rant, I think your idea of the Riddler being a former vigilante that serves as an example of what Bruce could become is really cool.

I think the Vigilante ending is my favorite where Joker just looses his fucking mind trying to expose Waller and lash out against Batman’s hypocrisy and what makes the ending even stronger imo is when he actually sees John as a friend and you get this ending that reminds me of the Killing Joke with these two characters finally understanding figuring out what tragic connection they have with one another.

Thing is it's nice to have these branching paths that make every ending unique, you and joker can either be friends, enemies , rivals , or in a way like the batman animated series joker having this wierd obsesive relationship over the other. That is the charm and I can say after multiple playthroughs you can either play as a Citizen or as Batman ,since being Wallers pupet very much makes batman obselete untill very late in the game. Also I get why some people might see Jim's reaction as chieldish but given how Waller outright comes in and takes over everything how would anyone else feel when their authority would be outright stripped from them in a second like nothing existed, adding to that the need to prove ones worth by any means. And granted some characters were less developed but the morality is very much there, it could be better but as it is it works well and kinda saves or loses you allies depending on what you pick. Another game maybe would further things but not in this current gaming climate with a big chance on woke.

So many things break my brain about this game, Joker being submissive to Harley rather than his portrayal of him as her abuser and manipulator in the comics was weird to me. But in some ways departing from the original version allows them to take bigger swings. But im currently watching a playthrough by a guy choosing the most ignorant choices so i need to see the better endings.

It's Edward Nigma and his name isn't silly. Well I found this riddler is what inspired The Batman movies riddler Edward Nashton. They made the riddler into a saw villain which was incorporated into the batman movie with that version. I wasn't mad about harleys portrayl she was way to much dominatrix strong female character vibe for me. She was just to far removed from the harley quinn I like from the TBAS. Same with Harvey Dent two-face who was way to overly muscular and the way he becomes two-face was ok but very similar to the dark Knight movies version. The penguin had a good story but I also hated the character design of the character to. He just looked like a regular guy with a Cockney accent.

Vigilante Joker is who I bring out normally, and I see John and Bruce have a repairable relationship by the time of that ending. The next Telltale Batman will be very fun simply to say.

I like the vigilante Joker ending for two reasons: 1. Better than the Villain Joker, wish it wasn't but it was. The villain Joker storyline allowed you to look more at how your relationships had developed in the story, but the Joker himself is honestly pathetic. He creates cheap scenarios based on easily deductible dilemmas on a weird belief that it's supposed to destroy your mental state. If you're nice to Gordon he literally fails to trick you, meaning Joker didn't get Gordon to betray him he just handed Jim a map anyway. When he got Selina to push the button, there are so many reasons why she would have pushed it that aren't a betrayal, Jokers insistence makes it seems to forced, and then she immediately helps you anyway. Tiffany's reveal could have been heavy but they move on a second later until the very end of the story. Then Joker acts so petty and desperate for validation that he doesn't come across as a threat. He acts more like a weird reject with big toys rather than a demented supervillain. 2. The Vigilante Joker route showcases Waller as the sick, useless wannabe protector she is. Every step of the way Gordon was more effective than Waller when he was given the chance, other than Iman Avesta Waller fails at every step in helping Bruce, and even then Avesta starts losing faith in Waller. She acts on her own accord for her own career instead of actually caring about people, yet she chastises Batman for not being perfect. It was good to finally recognize how horrible she is.

Can i just say how, if you go down the "good" path, how much Al doesn't even want to hear you out at the end. I can understand if he won't fall for the Wayne silver tongue, but it's like he won't even hear you out. I accept fault for my actions, and he just says "goodridence" of all the people (especially after not telling Bruce the specifics of his fathers past for so long) would understand Batman is binary on the surface, buy grey underneath, and people are human. He says he isn't a coward, but he runs away, and im a coward because I couldn't say it to his face.

@@Justadrie44 How in depth are these endings? If its dialogue differences then no, it doesn't warrant being called a brand new ending. The most unique part about the game is being able to have 2 drastically different storylines for episode 5. That is something that hasn't been seen since Telltales Game of Thrones. None of the risky decisions make a difference. Swapping Banes serum doesn't make him not return, setting a tracker on Joker doesn't matter, You reach the same place no matter how little or how much you do

And near the end joker and Batman worked together I can’t just see that happening idk there’s rare occasion where I can find that logical and accept it but as I said it’s rare for me bc I never can see Batman ever doing this maybe Bruce doing the villain work bc he was under the agent orders or blackmailed and yes his name isn’t joker until the end of the game but I think it was weird joker knew Batman like that before he became the joker ( yes I played the game and gave it chance it’s on my channel played it last year) but I’m a die hard batman fan but I can’t see this working and I’m glad it’s not canon or whatever it’s just a fun game 7/9/24

I just played this game because it's a telltale game but it makes me dissapointed to every choices and story it has, is this like really the "batman" from the comics? like if we compare these batman telltale series to wolf among us, Bigby can kill all the villain scums in game and still manage to argue and prove to fabletown that killing these scums will make the fabletown safe, unlike batman he is doing good and saving lives and still people hates him and seeing him as a criminal like even the villain in this game, for example the riddler he blames batman that iman avesta gets deaf because of batman actions these guilt trip is disgusting did the riddler even thought that he is going to bomb a whole city with his missles? this is the best example for the ending when alfred is going to leave bruce wayne because batman causes more chaos and casualties many lives taken because of his actions does alfred thinking without batman there will be more chaos in gotham city, like what the actualy f is this game why are we not blaming the villains of this game and game game somehow wants us to see that these villains are just pityful victims of batman OH BOOOHOO. The only enjoyble I experience on this game is the Vigilante joker story and the whole romance relationship of catwoman and batman, not gonna lie that the vigilante joker was so good that you pity the joker that you really want to make joker to change and become a hero but it never does because of his insanity. While that's my opposite feeling in the villain joker I really love that I taunt the joker and hitting batman it is like saving up your anger in the end but it dissapoints me that he only punch joker and didn't even kill him despite of what happened killing all the people in wayne enterprise and kidnapping your whole love ones why? there's only two option in game either you either call it justice or you see john doe as a friend that's why violence in this game was never an option like cmon game can we even break joker's leg or arm somehow show some brutality on these villain scums and I've also heard from batman fanbase that this is really like batman simping on joker it's just so sad for batman that he needs to suffer for joker
