Sorry about the lack of video at the end. OBS really does hate it when you have duplicate keybindings.

you can install 'autotiling' to i3 so you have some kind of automatic tiling manager like the others dynamic tiling mangers.

In my personal experience, I have always found BSPWM to be worse. That is mainly due to sxhkd being unreliable on my machines. It works for the day I installed it, and then the next day it keeps crashing (with no explanation in the log on why it crashed) after launching about 10 to 15 programs. Didn't matter what distro I run BSPWM on, sxhkd always found a way to shit the bed. I much prefer to have all keybinding in the WM's config file (so you don't have daemons like sxhkd being a point of failure).
@viriv2 жыл бұрын
you can always just use a different hotkey deamon if you don't like sxhkd since bspwm provides a ctl (bspc). and about having keybinds in your wm's config, i can see why but i don't agree because i like to keep my bindings in a different file since it provides less clutter

i prefer herbstluftwm which is litereally the best of these two without the disadvantages, only thing is the name of it, but if you think of it as hl window manager you should be fine it needs some time to get arround some different approaches like the frames and how it handles monitors, but actually you can set it up to appear and to behave as any other wm to your liking, and you can do it on the fly for example with a bashscript, you can go and change every setting while it's running, you can use stuff like other bars or sxhkd if you want, you can have like 128 or more workspaces if you can handle the control of that many, its ressource footprint is low, it's written in C, there are nearly no dependencies at all, it runs like everywhere and is super stable
@GreyDeathVaccine3 жыл бұрын
I second this. HLWM is great WM, especially for huge screens :-) Best feature of HLWM is that every frame has it's own layout and you can have mutiple frames on the same tag/workspace (again - huge screens :-) ). BTW. It was written in C, but for some time now author rewrites it to C ++ (don't know why, maybe as part of learning another language).

Now that you mention it, I like i3 layouts like tabbed I use it a lot and scratchpads with autotiling are more or less. From bspwm I know that there are layouts I would have to see if I can configure them and I don't know if there is scratchpad or something similar, I like the fibonachi, the preselection also a question of testing and see if I happen because I realize that it is better and easier in some things.
@TheLinuxCast3 жыл бұрын
BSPWM does have tabs, kind of. It's a monocle mode like DWM has. Scratchpads are something I miss in BSPWM.
@007arek2 жыл бұрын
The script whid I think from manjaro adds scratchpad but is't not that good like in i3.

At least now day, i3 can do gaps right away. Provided you have the stuff in your config file for them.

What weather app are you using and how did you get it working in your WM?
@TheLinuxCast3 жыл бұрын
It's a python script. It's on my github in the scripts folder, but you'll need an OpenWeather API key to get it to work. Github link is in the description.

There is no tabbed mod built in into bspwm right ? ( I guess there is a script but we're comparing twm out of the box and I don't know if it'd be as good as i3 tabbed mode) That honestly makes it useless to me, I'm the kind of guy to have dozens of terminals, browsers, text editors open at the same time, it'd be impossible to manage without tabs, I'd need way too much workspaces and it would end up to be impossible to use.
@TheLinuxCast3 жыл бұрын
So, bspwm doesn't have tabs, but it does have something called a monocle layout. Basically all windows are full screen and layered on top of one another, and then you switch between them with a binding. Doesn't have a title bar ala i3 or awesome, but you could put xwindow module in a polybar.
@heroe14863 жыл бұрын
@@TheLinuxCast I guess it could more or less do the trick, but the polybar module juste give you the title of the current or focused window right ? Titles don't really matter that's the indication that there are x windows opened in your WS that is important imo, and i3tabs play that role nicely. + The capability to have tabs inside tabs and stuff like that is a nice bonus too

I started with I3 then moved to bspwm about a year ago. I moved to dwm since I could have the full 9 tags on both monitors. Unlike at the time, bspwm would not do that. I could split them between the two monitors. I found that unacceptable. Has this changed?

@@MrCradleman I tried to moving to sway (I do believe it's the future), but had problems with OBS (no screen/window record). Although there are some posts about how to fix this, I couldn't deal with too many configurations (pipewire, xdg, wlroots, etc)... So, I'm back to i3... Maybe this will be simpler in the future.
