My wife come to the Netherlands to study, and she was flabbergasted that her professor ride a bike to the university. In China, like in the US all professors would drive big cars and you would be seen as poor riding a bike. Here, if biking is quicker or more efficient you are considered dumb using a car. The former prime minister lived in the inner city of The Hague, and he would always use his bike to go to his office or to parliament. By the way he did own a car, but it was a very old Saab.

In Benelux it's common to be courteous to other drivers and to give a wave or smile or nod of appreciation to other polite drivers. Many regulations make this assumption too. In the US, traffic law is to partially restrain the aggressive driving style. Similarly 'Jaywalking' is outlawed to stop idiots from jumping in front of traffic, whereas in NL there is no necessity because we treat traffic with respect (or else die young!)

I work for, as a gardener, for a rich family, living in a USD $ 2 million home, in the Netherlands. She's a ophthalmologist, makes USD 1000 a day and her husband own a successful Internet company. She goes per bike to her job and so does he; albeit owning a USD 150.000 BMW. So they can show that they are wealthy, but they hardly do so. In the Netherlands you are not respected for your money. If you are rich and you work as a volunteer - helping poor people to become litterate -, you will get better social recognition within the Dutch society. A great example is the billionaires family van der Vorm, from the City of Rotterdam. That family got rich by investments and selling the famous Holland America Line to US based Carnival. They can afford hundreds of Porches, Ferrari's etc. but they instead started a project to take over the debts of 1000 families in Rotterdam. In general: it is over here more important to be able to tell what you did in life vs. what do you posses in monetary terms.

Jordan thank you for your podcast. I enjoy listening to your english. The street planning which leads to less car use and more bike/pedestrian/public transport has a history of more than fifty years. Compare the statistics of fatal traffic accidents of children in the US and the netherlands. Some fifty years ago there was a protestmovent “stop de kindermoord”(stop the child murders) which caused the government to change the rules of street design. This led, lowly, to a traffic calming which led to less traffic accidents. Making streets narrower, adding separate bike lanes helped. Second reason for bike use: if you cant park your car downtown why not drive to carpark on the outskirts an take public transport? Or just bike from your suburb to downtown? Not all working dutch people can use their bike to get to work but most want to, to avoid the traffic jams, maybe not on all days, but when the weather is fine why not? There is more to traffic and road design than what a casual observation shows.

an observation from a simple dutch person. A car feels like an extension of your living room, a cyclist is just a pedestrian on two wheels. Interaction with other people is defined by that. Someone interferes with you in your living room, you get angry. Someone is approaching you on a bike, both or the one for who [t is most easy makes way. It is rather common that someone reverses in a one way street, even if the one approaching is driving the wrong way. You do that if it is easier for you to reverse than for the other person. Rationale: we all sometimes are lost and drive the wrong way, so next time it could be me. On the stop signs. The sign exists, but is seldom used. In the US almost all crossings have 4 stop signs, one at every corner. If they all have them, why not replace them by virtual signs? Much cheaper to pretend they are there, than actually wasting money and materials.

I know the Germans say that and it might be true (I haven’t seen it, but Im not that often on German highways). They say NL stands for Nür Links (only left). But the Germans do the same on Dutch highways, but at far lower speeds, below 100kmph. We have a maximum speed of 100kmph and on German highways there is basically no speed limit. I drive every between Amsterdam and Utrecht and lots of Germans keep drIving left on the outer lane at lower speeds than other cars and overtaking on the right can give you a big fine of hundreds of Euros, so most keep behind the German car. They’re slowing every driver on this five lane highway. I say the D stands for Dom/Dumm (stupid).

I ride my scooter to my work just because it's cheaper and even quicker in the city. I do not give a f about status. Status is fake. You can have a big car and house but in the end the bank has it all. IT'S NOT YOURS!So what is status? Being able to have bigger debts? Hm, about public transportation and such, please be aware that before the 1950s, many US cities and metropolitan areas had extensive, well used and well economically feasible/operational public transportation systems. These Metro-areas were connected with a lot denser network than is currently operated. In my case I am pretty well versed in the Twin-Cities Metropolitan area public transportation that extended to the St. Cloud metro area and consisted of Busses, tramways/streetcars, railroad and even regular and integrated boatlines traffic on the many lakes. In the early 1950s the entire system of public transoprtation, except that what remained of what US armed services operated, was relentlessly ripped out of Metropolitan area and replaced with the currently applicable car-centric infrastructure. Many really stinky deals were made to arrange for this and the corrupt car-lobby and organized crime went really far and hard to bulldoze any possible opposition. In the end that tremendous capital invested in public transportation was resolutely ripped off, torn out and demolished in order chase the individual into using cars in order to boost the bottom-line of the car-industry. Only in the last 10 to 15 years, certain parts of that infrastructure has been re-created at tremendous costs and effort. It works great and has good ridership (last time I looked). At the same time, the Twin-cities have become also one of the more advanced bicycle environments, despite its climatological adversity.. Just FYI

It all seems to go back to the mindset of people. That is clearly very different. Everyone who went to America and many who were born there have a dream, the dream that they can have a better life than elsewhere. The dream is that everyone can become rich. Yes, there are other ideals such as democracy, rights, equality, and freedom, in name but actually they do not really matter. It is about personal status and wealth for the vast majority. It is a 'Me' culture, not 'We'. Religion also plays a completely different role than in Europe, there are differences per country, but America is strongly Christian (in name), but look at the rich television preacher. Status and influence is what it is all about. In a country of dreamers, the Christian religion has taken on a completely unique form. But here too you see that it is actually a 'Me' culture with an energy and aggressive drive against everyone else. There is absolutely no will to give others freedom or to treat them as equals. They have an imaginary god who is there especially for them ('Me'), that suits dreamers exactly. It is a feel-good faith.

Yes its all interconnected, the society the politicale structure and the infrastructure. So you just can't discus one without at least crossing a littlbit over to the other ones. Most importend point why just puting in the infrastructure in america won't work is the zoning laws though. You need shops, services, restaurants and pubs to be close enough to be reach by bike or a short hop on PT. And that means 2 things you need a denser population and you need the former said thing basicly around the corner (within a 2 mile radius).

US roads are very wide and straight. They make drivers feel safe and they are naturally inclined to speed and not pay attention. People are horrible at paying attention in a boring safe situation. The American driving in the Netherlands will be a better driver as the roads help them to drive safely.

The drivers are cyclists as well. It is not that you are one or the other. People are both. And after you park your car, you are a pedestrian. There is no divide. No car drivers against cyclists against people using public transit. Driving is a privilege, not a right. This is possible to NOT have a drivers licence. It would be interesting if you would do a mock drivers licence test. Even just the theoretical one. I used to have a car, because I needed it. When I did not need it any more, I sold it. The money I saved is at least 350 EU per month. Probably more. And about the travel. Americans also just have way less time they CAN travel. e.g. I have 40 paid vacation days. And that does not get less when I am sick. So what I do is take 8 weeks per year and then do a trip. That is 8 vacations per year. City trip, beach vacation, mountains, touristy, cultural, food oriented, museums, walking, renting a car and driving, family visits, with friends, ... And I can partly do that because I do not have to pay a car

The American concept of being the only ones enjoying freedom is ignorant beyond belief.

Who cares about your status or material possessions haha, spending no money is the national hobby, looking poor, and retire early and chill in Spain or Latin America ✌️

Dutch drivers are also cyclists!

@DaanHoogland Exactly! Aside from that, in case of accidents it's first and foremost the driver who is held accountable.

About abortion, that should be the last thing that you want to do. There are so many ways to PREVENT getting pregnant, but in puritan murica you can't talk about that!

Nee we gaan beetje fiets kopen 10000 euro. Gegarandeerd binnen uur gestoken. Lekker oude meuk. Of betaalbare fiets kopen.

I strongly disagree with your point on how Americans are compared to Dutch people. I am a strong believer that a human being is product of its own environment. So any human being can adopt the Dutch lifestyle.

People could but they probably don't want to change. They probably would like change, but maybe not "to change", most people don't.

and you want to return to LA where no one wants to ride a bike. Sad, Abortion is off topic in politics in most European countries other than Poland.
@JordanGreenYT3 күн бұрын
People definitely ride bikes there (especially on the beach where there are bike lanes). That said, their bike infrastructure has a LONG way to go before it catches up to the Netherlands. But if it ever does, the weather will make it a SUPER enjoyable experience.
