Personally, I'd insist on a screen calibrator before doing any editing. I've seen too many photos that have been edited to look good on someones misadjusted screen and therefore look awful on screens that are properly set up -- and in prints. But actually, I'd probably not recommend that *beginners* put their effort into learning to edit photos. They need to learn to *take* good photos. After they've got that down reasonably well, then they can get a calibrator and some software, and go back and edit their pictures.

It can work both ways, editing can enhance the process of taking photos, and taking photos can enhance editing. The calibration part is really important but maybe not an issue beginners need to be concerned about too much...

Hi there, what lens would you recommend for Astrophotography & taking pictures of the night sky? I just bought a Sony alpha a350 dslr camera. It has a rechargeable battery and it comes with the charger, shoulder strap, and a 18 - 70 mm lens. If you use a Sony camera, then use Capture One for Sony or Capture One Express for Sony, the Express version are free for Sony users ! C1 are the best editor for pros.
