When it comes to getting diagnosed with osteoarthritis, figuring out treatment options, conversing with healthcare professionals and finding relief- the journey isn't easy. Finding arthritis pain relief can be overwhelming- trying to figure out where to start, who to believe and what to do.
As it turns out, there are a few misconceptions that become apparent when you are navigating this osteoarthritis journey. After treating thousands of patients with osteoarthritis, diving into the research and talking with people all over the world, there are FIVE things I believe everyone should know about osteoarthritis.
Topics such as joint replacement surgery, exercise for arthritis, weight loss as a treatment option and what pain means are incredibly important to make sure you understand to help you on this journey. The more you know, the better off you'll be at opening up the dialogue with an arthritis specialist, professional, family, friends, etc.
Knowing these things will help you stay on the right path. If not, it can lead you down a path of isolation, depression, debilitating pain, anxiety and worry for the future. Instead, watch this video to learn how to put a positive spin on this journey and give you hope.

Can you do something for people who can’t get out of bed? I can’t do the log roll for the life of me. Every PT/OT on KZbin recommends it. And my neuromuscular occupational therapist tried helping me do it, but I can’t. It’s easy.. when everyone does it on a small physical therapy table, but when you have a soft queen size purple mattress … your hands sink in etc. So I’ve been laying on my dominant elbow and crunching up for a more than a year now and it’s killing me. Little help please!

I love your channel, thank you. I have bone on bone in both knees, doctors have said that I Need surgery but I can’t because I’m self employed so if I don’t work I will lose any income I have. I also have fibromyalgia so I have a dilemma and feel stuck as I live on my own and don’t have anyone to pick up the loss of income. My pain level is so great at the end of the day I can barely move because I am on my own I can’t take the time for surgery and recovery. Some days I feel broken with no fix in sight.

Doris, my doctor told me the same thing about my knees I tore out my acl in both knees over the years. I had 3 surgeries in one knee, but not the other. The knee that had no surgery is doing better than the knee that had surgery, so I told the orthopedic surgeon, "no" to knee replacement. That was 10 years ago. It is not like my knees are as they were when I was in high school, but i am 75 and walk a couple of miles with my 70 lbs dog every day, do tai chi, and yoga, garden and care for and excercise my wheelchair bound husband. I have learned how to manage joint pain with diet, stretching, and movement. The body is remarkable and does adapt. I don't need surgery. My grandfather and father had always been active all of their lives despite arthritis and injuries, but they were active and self-sufficient all of their lives into 100.

My doctor just told me that PT is not meant for my feet or hands. (Diagnosed with OA this past July). He said PT is only for a single joint or an injury. I decided to look up an arthritis doctor in my area. Guess whose name popped up yes HIM! I feel screwed and terribly frustrated. I've had to do ALL my research myself since being diagnosed. He only told me to take walks. I don't know what that was supposed to do for my hands. I've learned alot from you though. 😁

I have OA and I didn't get complete relief until I changed my diet. I eat a whole foods anti-inflammatory diet without grains ,sugar processed snacks. I eat that way 99% of the time and it has lead me to be pain free. I also exercise daily strength and lots of walking. When I cheat of my diet the pain comes back. I also take supplements like turmeric, ginger, fish oil and collagen daily. I hope this helps.

At first, i never had pain, while doing strengthening-training after i tore my meniscus. Yet, that didn´t prevent OA from developing slowly over time. By now, i am in pain most of the time. Being pain-free during exercise obviously doesn´t indicate, that nothing is happening.

You know what would be really great? If you could talk about frostbite damage and ways to recover. And I’m not talking about a little bit of frost nip. I almost froze to death a few years ago and now my lower legs and feet feel like they have permanent damage. When winter comes,-the aching and stiffness is that much worse. I was thinking maybe red light therapy might help? Or moving to South America. Please help 😢

Just had my annual physical yesterday and things went well except for 3-4/10 rating of arthritic pain. My new young doctor would like a bone scan and possible Fosamax regimen or some newer medications( I have completed 3yrs of Fosamax before). I feel that strategic mobility as you very clearly demonstrates is a blessing to us who are experiencing arthritic pain or joint inflammation 🙏

A NY doctor is offering an evaluation of the knee and 1 Shockwave treatment at a very low price. Do you have any experience or knowledge of people who have had Shockwave treatments of the knees? I was skeptical but did some research. Looks like it might be helpful, though may require several treatments. Also seems to be without risk.

Thank you for this talk! Is there something in the way insurance coverage is set up that limits a physical therapist’s ability to take a whole body approach? I have OA in my foot and have had foot PT. My guess is that caused compensation in the way I walk, which then aggravates my hip and groin on the same side, and probably my low back (which is better thanks to the work I am doing with you!) In my effort to improve I think I have aggravated both knees (squats and sit to stands) and IT bands (lateral steps). Ugh! You’re right, maybe I need to dial back the intensity of what I’m doing.

Yes, unfortunately physical therapists who take insurance are limited by certain diagnoses and can’t always easily treat other joints which I find frustrating. One of the reasons I got out of corporate healthcare.

I'm undergoing physical therapy at Langone at the moment for shooting pain going down from my sacro illyac joint through the buttock down to my foot, among all the exercises they gave me to do at home, only one provides some relief, which is bending forward in a seated position and touching the ground between my ankles. (the other exercises increase the pain). I'm 70 and have had a very physically active lifestyle until arthritis caught up with me. Loosing mobility is the worst thing that could happen to me, even taking my dog to play ball in the park becomes difficult. I'm at my wits end trying to reach out for any help to make life more bearable, any suggestion?
