I know you probably won’t see this comment, but I wanted to say that I am SO appreciative of this video and the advice you give! I’m currently in high school and am taking the psychology classes I can, because I really want to be an art therapist, but I’ve been worried about where to go from my current point. This video has been so helpful for gaining resources and opportunities that I can check out, and I just wanted to say thank you!

One thing I've found useful is to be a "guinea pig" (volunteer or low-cost client at a school) for those learning their profession, be it psychology, medicine, dentistry, physical therapy, massage, etc. While there is a small amount of risk involved (students are expected to make mistakes), the students are always supervised, and their supervisors will ensure anything that goes wrong gets addressed without delay. At the very least, you may well gain some amusing stories, and perhaps some valuable life-lessons. Edit: It's also a great way to gain access to services you may not have otherwise considered using.
@drali3 жыл бұрын
100% true about access to services at a reduce cost! I also think you end up getting a good experience because trainees carry a much smaller caseload, think a lot about the work they are doing, and are usually highly survived. Sure, you can see someone who has more experience, at the same time they're likely a bit more burned out and spend less time thinking about your treatment. It's a tradeoff. Experience is great for complex problems but for a lot of issues a trainee can be wonderful! Hope you've been doing well, Bob! Great to see you here again.

I might do it, and I'm at my last year. In NZ there's not much spaces, but I can go to Aussie. I need to think about it, and I did my research since 2018 on the psych stuff. Maybe I can do a mixture of philosophy, or even math with it. I'll think about it, till around August. But I can always change.
@drali3 жыл бұрын
Math, specifically statistics, is super helpful for psychological research. The other thing to consider is double majoring. Check out my video on “should I major in psychology” for more on that.

@@drali It's August today, I'm going to apply for more than just 1 major. I ditched psychology to physics because of the jobs and stuff, even I am interested in it I don't think it's for me as a career. Well the good thing is that it's easy to change what you're doing.

Thanks, great to have you here! See if you can find a human factors lab to volunteer at. I did a year internship at a human factors lab at NASA during college. If there’s nothing like that around you, look into cognitive psychology labs.

Hi Ali! Firstly, thanks for the amazing content you put out. Secondly, this is not high school related, but I'm 3rd year undergrad on clinical stream, but I find myself to be very enthusiastic about forensic psychology. The thing is, many people who actually studied this and finished their doctorates in forensic psychology, say it's completely useless and they went to do something else. What is your view on forensic psychology major?

Now I wonder... Could you please make a review / tier list of the most popular psychology channels on YT?
@drali3 жыл бұрын
I *could*. It’s a request I get a lot. But it’s not something I’ll do. Many of us are colleagues doing the best we can to share information about psychology and mental health. I love getting feedback from colleagues but reaction videos like that might get into drama territory.

Hey doc. I'm wondering if you could recommend some "psychology for non psychologists" type reading, viewing, or listening. To separate truth from fiction as to psychiatric disorders commonly mentioned in popular culture (e.g. schizophrenia in A Beautiful Mind, dissociative identity disorder in Doom Patrol, PTSD in The Punisher). Any ideas?

Hi! You probably won't see this comment Dr because it's been a long time since the video came out but I just wanted to say I love this video so much because I've been interested in psychology for a while now. In the future I really want to have a respected job so I can make my parents proud. Is being a psychologist or psychiatrist as respected as other healthcare proffesions? Because I've seen a lot of stuff that says psychology isn't a science and that a psychology degree is not worth it (which I think is not true!).

Get as some research experience you can by volunteering in labs related to the graduate work you want to do. Ask the professors if you can do a thesis with them. Go to conferences and connect with other faculty you want to work with in grad school. Join associations that represent the field you want to go into and connect with grad students who are doing what you want to do. Good luck!
