5 Things I Do to Have a Better Home Network

So far my whole apartment has Cat5e cables which are enough for 1 Gbit/s but after planed renovation I am going to deploy Cat7 as futureproof setup. Also what I do, that I every 1st day in month scan Wi-Fi noise and decide, if my channel choice (1 / 100+104 for router, and 11 / 112+108 for additional AP) is still least crowded by other networks. Then I look for software updates for RouterOS (primary) and DD-WRT (for access point), if there is update I carry out update, if not, then I do planned reboot. Also what should be considered is channel width. Many routers have by default 40 MHz width even on 2.4 GHz, which works like double sided sword. Access point picks more noise from already crowded 2,4 GHz and also contributes more to 2,4 GHz congestion. Please do not use more than 20 MHz width on 2,4 GHz. I even reduced width on 802.11ac networks to 40 MHz because we are using Wi-Fi mostly for phones, tablets, where maximal practical speed ~ 240-260 Mbit/s is My next suggestion is, what can be connected using ethernet, then connect it using ethernet. Even my Chormecast 3 is connected using Ethernet and notebook that I use for home office is connected to ethernet. Wi-Fi is used then mostly by phones, tablets and notebooks that are often carried around the apartment

One of my winter projects was to optimize my home network. After watching your video I immediately found a CAT5e that I had between my cable modem and my router. I replaced it and I'm now doing a site survey to optimize my channels. Excellent video and it gave me a great starting point to get the most out of my network. Love the drum ... Another bullet point to cabling advice: use pre-made patch cables whenever possible, but definitely don't use ethernet cables that are terminated like the ones shown at 3:23. Those sloppy terminations will make your connection flaky and slow, because twisted wire pairs are untwisted for too long (yes, untwisting 1 cm longer matters) and the RJ45 jack is not fixed to the outer cable sheathing.

U can get away with even 10Gbps on cat5e as long as its less than a 45meter run of cable and its UTP

Hey Behfor can you get a Pace 5268ac that AT&T uses and do a tutorial on it trying to setup bridge mode. Supposedly it can't be done and requires something called DMZ and the connected router has to be on a completely different network IP address.

Thanks for the informative video. Love ur content. In fact last week I suddenly had issues with my fibre connection and referring to your guide was able to connect my spare phone as secondary WAN and minimize downtime. Not too mention that way my AiMesh nodes doesn't get affected as well. Still waiting for the Onemesh/Tplink Archer A7 follow up videos

Lol... A great story from Indonesia: 3 years ago, a national ISP changed all the landline telecommunication from copper to FO, so it means that all the house connected to its product must use a GPON wireless router. Guess what? Suddenly there were lots of 2.4 GHz signal, literally on every channels available. The worst part, those wireless don't even connected to Internet, lol. It was just there because the technician or the company didn't have any training about wireless noise. The easiest way is to install the 5 GHz wireless router, but damn that signal can't penetrate brick well..

hello, can you advise me, I have internet from a local provider and I have an external unit Ubiquiti LBE-5AC-Gen2, I have to set my router as ap or otherwise, if I set it to ap, wifi 2.4 and 5 ghz will be more stable for me, the function will also work in this mode from Asus AiProtec because I currently don't know what type of connection to choose, if I take it logically the external unit works as for access to its already existing network or not?

Thanks so much! Both cases are possible and it'll depend on which one works better for you! I personally use separate SSIDs because I use each frequency for a different reason. But using the same SSID and password will make the network simpler and it's up your device to decide which frequency band it should connect to. Thanks.

Actually, you can achieve >100Mbps with CAT5, the limitation goes by the Fast Ethernet port

Good question! Yes they do, because all AiMesh nodes use the same channels for the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz and unfortunately there will be some level of interference. I actually talked about it a little bit towards the end of this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/n5STk5qllNqYh5I Thanks :-)

Regarding your suggestion to use Cat-6 cable, I have a 40 mgb service with my provider. Am I correct in assuming that Cat-5 or Cat-5e will be sufficient with my service? Is there anything to be gained by going to Cat-6 ? Love your work and have been subscribed after watching the first video. 👍

You're right, if you have a 40 Mbps service then as far as the internet, it shouldn't matter. However, if you also use cat-5 in the local LAN, which is most likely a Gigabit LAN, then you're downgrading the LAN speed from 1 Gbps to 100 Mbps. That's also something to keep in mind, especially if you transfer big files between devices and such. CAT 5e should be alright though 👍 If I were to buy a new cable though I would definitely go for CAT 6 because it's very cheap and doesn't make sense to buy CAT 5e anymore , thanks 👍

I'm in a similar boat as my internet service is limited to 25Mbs. The few wired Ethernet devices I have are older printers and 15 year old computers running Linux. Technically, I'm always about 5 years behind, except for my operating systems.
