The aluminum V8 engine was derived from the Buick V8 that was designed and engineered in 1958 for use in a small, cheap economy car (the 1960 Buick Special; which itself was derived from the Chevy Corvair body). This engine was never designed to last 200,000 miles (nothing in 1958 was designed to last 200,000 miles), was never designed to push around a truck that weight as much as a Land Rover, it was never engineered to have pressed-in cylinder liner (Rover’s idea to save a penny), and the original 3.5 liter was never designed with the idea of over-boring the block to 4.0 liters. Lastly, it was never designed to still be in production for 44 years using the original block castings. Given all that, the little V8 did surprisingly well.

not true the engine you describe was the 3.5 litre v8 and it was magnificent in my 1972 range rover with 300,000 miles the engine when stripped because I thought it was time not because it was broken was in great shape could have easily done another 100k miles. the 4.6 is a pos the TD5 option is much better but the main problem with landrovers outside the UK is driver attitude, the vehicle will take you anywhere reliably and safely under two conditions, 1 you drive it in a reasonable manner something Americans seem unable to do, 2 maintain the vehicle, change the oil and filters regular and use premium oils and filters and keep the radiator and coolers clean. I sold my 72 with 450k miles 9 years ago and still see her driving around with her new owner who tells me she is still great. I now have an 03 disco2 TD5 with stage two ecu larger intercooler and upgraded transmission done for fun more than need.

The Buick Special was not derived from the Corvair. The '60 Buick Special was built on the Y platform, as were several other Buicks, Pontiacs, and Oldsmobiles. The Corvair was built on the Z-platform.

The stock stereo is pretty good for sound quality IMO, I have a bluetooth adapter that takes the place of the factory cd changer, works great. Get a steel front bumper, I lost control swerving in the snow and bounced off the center median doing 70km/h and kept going. The bumper wasn't damaged just some light scratches in the powder coating. Shadow offroad out of the UK, best looking bumper for the D2 IMO and cheaper by a long shot than anything I could get made locally here in canada. Somehow it was cheaper to fly a 100lb bumper from the UK to the west coast of Canada than is would have been to ground ship a similar bumper from california. I would love to know how that works.

Sorry to contradict you mate, but aluminum does rust, because of the galvanic or electrolytic corrosion. Aluminum rust is white colour. In fact, that myth (that aluminum does not rust) is responsible for Land Rover owners to be negligent in caring about the chassis and the bodies. Every time you have steel and aluminum in contact with water present (unless you live in the Sahara, it happens all the time), there is (silently) a galvanic corrosion process. And that not only occur between body and chassis, but in fact in the body it self, because not all the body is made of aluminum. The best example of these phenomena is what happen with Defender doors: aluminum exterior shell + steel interior frame (poorly protected until Puma doors, where that frame is galvanized). Another important thing is the fact that originally Land Rover used a Aluminum alloy, called Birmabright, wich was: 1% to 7% magnesium, with

Two things one the body is not all aluminum some panels are but the main body structure is in fact steel and they do occasionally rust pretty bad. Second that is real leather on the interior it has to be taken care of or it will go bad. It’s not like a regular cloth or vinyl seat.

In the late 1990s, Bosch engineered a new intake and engine and emissions management system for the Rover V8, which introduced a number of changes over the previous GEMS engine management and intake design. A common complaint on the Bosch engines is intake manifold gaskets fail frequently, resulting from these changes. There are other engine management issues specific to the Bosch engines, which aren't found on previous versions of the Rover V8. This is what is meant when a Discovery or late P38 owner refer to the "Bosch Engine".

V8 sucks... outdated.. low power gaz guzzler - get a TD5. - its much better. Gearbox? My TD5 cruises around 2100 rpm @60mph all day long. Interior isnt the best quality but it lasts if You take care of it(except leather around handbrake and gearshifter it just crumbles) - especially seat leather just need conditioning like all leathers. Cheap original audio is crappy - optional Harman Kardon soundsystem with CD-box and subwoofer is amazing - must have option. Facelift lights/front end is expensive as hell to fix (no spare parts). Pre-FL (under 2001 year) D2 front is cheap AF - 50bucks for brand new headlight etc. Its easy to work on car -You can do most stuff at home easily - lots of resources/info and how-tos. Overall nothing more than any other "old" SUV - its little more complicated but nothing too crazy - id say best old school mechanics with a dab of simple electronics to make life little more comfortable - hence its a nice cruiser every day/weather of the year everywhere. But i am biased since i have owned mine for 3 years now after "saving" it from scrappers with 250k+ miles and absolutely love it. I think its very under appreciated as a versatile vehicle but overhyped on repairs/ownership costs/reliability wise. You cant have "every capability" vehicle dirt cheap - You gotta DIY fix/maintain it or pay workshops - simple. Cheers! :)
