My biggest takeaway is the application of simple techniques. Simplicity is key when faced head on with adversity or obstacles. No time to think. Simple but highly effective techniques when mastered are the most powerful. Love these analogies sifu🙏🏽

I learned to use the path of least resistance or to go with the flow instead of fighting it (especially while trapping). When the enemy tries to push me off the centerline I'll let his energy work for me, for example with a Lap Sao. This principle applied to business showed me to work much more on my strengths rather than on my weakness. Because the one is taking your energy and the other is emplifying it📈

Agreed, that is why Bruce Lee abandoned Wing Chun after the fight that lasted under 5 min against a tai chi master named Wong Jack Man. Modern JKD says let them have the lane they want to fight over and hit them from a indirect position. (AKA Change lanes and strike!) Fighting over lanes gets you killed in real life. That is the difference of conceptual JKD based on wing chun vs Modern JKD after the Wong Jack Man fight. After that fight Bruce knew he had to remove all the wing chun from JKD. That is when he went to fencing and bare knuckle boxing. Jack Dempsey showed bruce in letters why you want to use your dominant hand as the lead and that matched the fencing books Bruce was reading from his brother house. Brandon and Shannon Lee learned from Ted Wong (AKA Modern JKD) and not Dan Inosanto! (AKA Conceptual JKD) WHO you learn from and lineage is more important that the art is self.

As a Mixed Martial Arts student I agree with you. Fights are not always happening in enviroment that you train your martial art. It can be close quarters or open areas. You have to fight in different styles in different places for example in close quarters you can use your wing chun, in open areas you can use your karate techniques.

I first began my martial arts journey learning northern style kung fu . There was a strong emphasis on low wide stances . It taught me that everything needs a strong foundation . And then I began training in a southern style kung fu called Five Ancestors . It emphasized hard body conditioning . It taught me to be really tough and really strong .

Dan, really appreciate this video. I also practice wing chun and you're definitely right about structure, because I'm a skinny little asian man myself, and in my experience, using my body/structure to maintain constant pressure on bigger/heavier people works, not just muscles. Great video. My martial art and self defense experience is avoid, stay aware of space, distance and position, have a barrier or guard but be stealthy and seem relaxed, assess your options, if you go you explode and break their structure, overwhelm with forward momentum and simple direct strikes, target the soft spots and get away. Don't look to fight...you get hurt... but prepare and practice your strategy in case.

The three most important lessons that I have learned from kickboxing and bjj are:-1: Great things happen suddenly if you don't give up - 2: Keep calm and stay focused even in the worst situations, because if you can hold your ground for a while, the circumstances ( the positions in grappling) can change very quickly 3: Even a 155 pounder can move a mountain with the right mindset and technique! Love your videos, Dan!

Training Wing Chun and JKD myself I learned 10 things that apply to life. 1. To perfect small, not take giant leaps 2. Simplicity comes when train so much it comes without thinking and you're just feeling. 3. Not to use strength against strength, when they push you pull, when they pull you push. 4. Take your time and never rush and you get better results. 5. Its not about winning, it's about learning. 6. Its not the style, it's how you use it and what you use it for. 7. Punch straight forward, not telegraph or pull back and not waste energy and movement. 8. Structure over strength and power 9. Focus on results over process 10. Foundation over fancy moves and skills.
