Saint Petersburg is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, I have heard this from several of my friends. Fantastic city and architecture, definitely a destination that everyone should visit, and I am planning one for sure. What thrilled me the most in Russia are the Russian markets, huge, very huge, I have never seen such big markets in my life or on film. There you can find everything you want. Only Asians on 50 meters of stalls sell hundreds of different types of Asian salads, from seafood, various mushrooms, fish, vegetables ..... something you can't see anywhere in Europe. You can walk around the market for hours and you can't see everything. The other thing that surprised me was the hospitality and household of the Russians, there is as much food and drink as you want and what you want. I was visiting Russians at home, but also with Russians at restaurants. It was always lavish and tables full of everything. And the Russians always give a good speech!

Russia has a lot of beauty but only Moscow and a few other places where power and money is centered look modern. Go east or to more rural parts of the country and it's a completely different story.

Tomsk is quite near Novosibirsk and if you want to visit this city, it has a lot of interesting building, very cool wooden houses, university and other things, I have some friends from Novosibirks who absolutely loved it here, they said that Tomsk is beautiful. Victoria, it's so nice to hear that you are adjusting fine to the Russian culture. I'd say that it's not so easy to love Russia but if you fell in love with it, it's for life. As for affordability I spent the whole last year in my home city in South Russia and my total expenses including rent, utilities, food, internet, phone - altogether was $ 400.00. Good luck to you!

@@rianalee3138 I know. I reside in Minnesota that's why I was fully aware of the difference. On top of that variety and quality of food products was amazing. If you take large supeermarkets like 'Tabris' I can compare it only with Byerlys only ten times less expensive. Plus healthcare - it's free for all Russian citizens but you have the option to go to the private clinic. I was attending specialist for couple of months and averagely I paid the equivalent of 25 to 30 US dollars for visit plus lab.

@@yuryskrip5500 All of these things and more have been motivating me to learn Russians and pursue a career abroad. Thank you so much for the insight! I currently pay a relatively large amount for a therapist as well as a general care provider and this is with insurance, so i’d love to see how medicines functions in a more standardized economy. I feel America has relatively low quality food opinions (at-least readily available) and organic food is very expensive. I’m glad to hear it’s not the same over there!

@@rianalee3138 Hello. I live in Siberia, even I find it strange to hear the expression "organic products". As if there are "synthetic products". Honey, which I eat is collected by bees, milk is given by a cow (I take it from a neighbor), and sheep graze in the mountains. potatoes and onions (many other things) grow in my city. picking mushrooms in the forest. We make pumpkin and tomato juice ourselves. :))

I'm a russian living in Germany and we had some snow two days before christmas, so I was allready exited to have "snow white chrismas" here and right at the first day, everything was gone and we got rain and dirt (what we had for the most part in the past years). У нас в нашем микрорайоне (г.Новочеркасск Ростовской обл.) был парень темнокожий, мама русская, а папа с африканской страны (сокурсники), так у него девчонок отбою не было и он себя считал русским донским казаком, и никто не против. Правда срочку на Кубани в морпехах отслужил, там и остался.

I can't stand the fake friendliness of the USA, I worked in the financial district of NYC and everyone you pass by says "good morning" or "How you doing" in the elevator to total strangers, then you have to respond back with the same. Its so annoying and tiring. They don't know you so they don't care how you are doing, yet they still say it. In my country you don't talk to total strangers, you don't have to even acknowledge them. You just go about your business.

@Lovely_Day It's just that a person can't constantly pretend, because these smiles are fake anyway. This then brings with it mental and psychological problems, a person already accustomed to falsehood will never be able to become real and honest, because of this it is difficult to build any kind of connections: friendly, love, family. And I don't think that all Americans have decided so, rather it is imposed by your society by those who manage it, dividing people into selfish individualists and thinking about themselves in the end. As a result, an infantile lonely and unhappy person grows up. After all, a real emotion is genuine and carries only a positive effect for the psyche, unlike a fake one.

@Lovely_Day it's not about being respectful, quite the contrary. Making yourself forcefully smile is simply dishonest. It's honestly, very strange, because at some point it dawns on you that everyone around you is pretending and if you don't (because you might simply have a very, very bad day) you stand out and some of them will even call you "disrespectful" or "impolite" or even a "bad person". I have to "enjoy" a similar culture at my workplace currently and it feels like a mental asylum. It would be funny if you watched it on a video, but it's not funny if you have to live with that. People who have absolutely no idea about what I do or what my name is, are greeting me 30 or 40 times a day, to their obvious disgust (because it makes their mouth ache more or something), and there are even people who will accuse you of being ignorant if you don't do that. I have been told several times that I have been unfriendly to someone I have never heard of before. Everyone is smiling at everyone, but when someone is not in office, he is a target of many "words". I can guarantee you, that some of the people you think they like you, in fact openly hate you for no good reason, immediately after you leave the same space they are in. And it might be only because you forgot to smile back one day. I don't get why would anyone find these honest people - like Russians, or Finnish, or others strange or different just because they don't smile without a reason to do so. It's a problem (and a serious one) of those who are not like that, simply because of the fake pretense. One of the most interesting things about people who don't pretend to be better than they are is, that they are in fact, much more friendly than they seem.

We can have the same negative view of the Russian un smiling culture too. Depressive and unhealthy social environment. But we don't cast negative opinion on Russian people as fake or bad.

If it was like you claim it is, anti-depressant drug statistics would look differently, wouldn't they? Seriously, you should try it as you don't seem to have a slight idea about the real world. Also, an overly fake friendly american in Russia or Finland (or elsewhere) is recognized to be an american and dealt with accordingly (specifics depend on the situation). Americans are unpopular for a reason. Errr, not for a reason, but for many reasons. And it's their own fault.

Peterhof is not really a castle, but a palace. "Peterhof" means "Peter's Court". The word is of German origin and pronounced as "Pitirgóf" in Russian. Since Russian language lacks the H-sound, all Hs in German borrowings into Russian get replaced with either Г or Х

Victoria, the rate crime in Russia may look as high as in USA but the nature of crime is different. In USA people have easy access to guns therefore there are so many shootings and robberies in public places. In Russia lots of crimes are happaning at home. Usually relatives or friends (not the best people by nature) get drunk, start arguing and may beat each other or use a knife. For statistics it is still a crime. But in real life a sranger has MUCH less chance to get hurt in the street in Russia than in other countries. Also in Russia there is no such deep separation in society. A janitorial with low income and a professor or a businessman still can live in the same condo. Living in Russia you can confirm my words. There is much bigger difference between rich and poor in USA. If you loose your job or health, you loose your house. Forced to move to less safe neighborhood where houses are cheaper and more affordable. Crime level is usually very high there. In Russia you may see worse and better developed districts but there are no horrible ghettos like in America.

@@andrewryabikhin2441 I think she was just comparing the nature of crime between the US and Russia. Of course, people do get shot in Russia. But it isn’t nearly as prevalent as in the US. Even then, most shootings in Russia are connected in one way or another to organized crime (криминальные разборки). Therefore, if you don’t associate yourself with the Mafia, you should be fine. Needless to say, organized crime exists in the US as well. In the US, there is a massive violent crime epidemic. Murders, carjackings armed robberies, muggings, etc. A buddy of mine got killed for his car in Atlanta. He parked at a gas station, went inside to buy something, got back in his car and 3 armed teenagers got in his car, shooting him in the head without saying a word. And before you say I am a naive American, I am a Russian living in the US. Sure, the US has its advantages. But when it comes to violent crime, it is a much bigger problem in the US. The only way to avoid it is by paying an arm and a leg to live in a rich suburb (like what I do). But even then, it is still a good idea to keep a gun in the home/car. As far as crime in Russia is concerned, that’s easy to avoid. Just don’t associate with alcoholics and you will be fine.

Well since I'm commentary 470, I don't expect many readers but I always enjoy praising Russia where I lived in Moscow in 2011,2012 and 2013. Best of all, the people I made friends with there , they were so solicitous about my welfare and hospitable., Invited me everyday to join them and meet their friends and got me tickets to concerts and shows, ice hockey and the circus. I frequently visited Red Square, The Kremlin and G.U.M.,, Novodevichiy Convent, Gorky Park, the Stary Arbat Street, Izmaylovo Park and its fabulous souvenir market.

Very good to hear. I can recommend Georgia & Armenia if you get the chance. I went there on holiday in 2019 and loved both. I hope to retire this year or '23, then spend a year just exploring them* more, with occasional adventures into Russia. In both countries they speak a lot of Russian, and younger people often speak English too. I learned Russian at high school & university. I was booked to visit Russia (Piter, Moscow & Kazan) in 2020, but it all got cancelled by Covid. (*Azerbaijan too, if possible, as I have only been to Baku on a day trip from Tbilisi.)

Thanks for sharing; you have totally change my initial perceptions of Russia. Mind you those perceptions were based on things like media and my limited experiences with Russians here in New York. I have to say though that New Yorkers are some of the most down to earth people that you’ll meet. Everyone’s focused on their hustle (may be family, may be a new business venture, may be a dream in the making, or it may be gardening….seriously), but we definitely will smile at complete strangers……just don’t be weird cuz we pick up on that too! In 1917, right after the October Socialist revolution, in Sovet Russia people of all ethnicities were proclaimed equal and made equal in the eyes of law. The equality you're experiencing is a (dying) remnant of the Sovet culture (which in itself was a product of the USSR's socialist economics). In socialist economics people are your comrades (not your competition), you work together for the common goal (which is the wellbeing of each member of the society). In capitalist economic system you have to compete against other people: their loss means your gain. In socialist economics you have NO economic incentive to hate other people. Capitalist economic forces you to use any advantage you can have over your competitor (and if you can use race, sex, gender, etc. against your competition and win, the capitalist system rewards you for doing so). Any cultural inequality (sexism, racism, homophobia, etc.) stems from economic inequality - some people own property (the minority) and have real power, some people (the majority) work for that rich minority and have no real power. As long as there is this rich minority that owns everything, there will be inequality. And you may win temporary concessions, culturally, but in an economically unequal society those concessions will be compensated by other inequalities. The goal is for the working people (the majority) to have economic and political power over the dwindling minority of rich owners. Only then, when all rich owners have been made into working people, and everyone works together (not against each other) you can have true democracy and build true equality.

I loved the video and your genuinely positive vibes. I think you're blessed in more ways than one, and so is your husband. And one thing's for sure - this world is a better place with people like you in it. Therefore, it really saddens me that some jerks went racist on you, because only a damaged soul filled with deep resentment towards life itself would feel the urge to act like that. I am one of those "old white men", living in Germany (well, what's left of it) and used to have similar experiences when walking around town with our little afro-german son. He was the sweetest kid, with a positive attitude and lots of close friends. And still he would sometimes get racist insults from nasty old people who were complete strangers. Fortunately, he was too young to really understand what was happening. He is now an adult and lives very happily with his wife and two children in the USA. IMHO, Russia is one of the places to be right now b/c it's clearly on an upward trajectory whereas most of the western nations are in total decline - esp. Germany is circling the drain, thanks to its utterly insane political class. You are way too young to know, but America used to be a lot like what you seem to love about Russia before it went bad: industrious, friendly, welcoming people, still untarnished by the curse of political correctness, maybe even a bit too polite at times. Nowadays, you can find remnants of the old America in "flyover country". In 1974 I spent a long summer holiday with my best high-school buddy in Glendale, Ca. where we lived with his mother, who was married to a strict but friendly LAPD officer. It was my best holiday ever and we just went wild: football games in the L.A. Coliseum, Disneyland, Universal Studios (Jaws had just been released and was the big but rather cheesy attraction). We went from San Diego up to San Francisco (which was just beautiful back then), spent some time at the shores of Lake Tahoe with trips to Las Vegas, Boulder, Co. and the Grand Canyon. When those glorious summer holidays ended they had to drag me out kicking and screaming. In 1984 I came back with my soon to be wife and LA had already deteriorated a lot. When we got out of LAX and stepped into the bus terminal we found ourselves in the middle of a gun fight. A warm welcome of sorts. We booked it out of there, managed to get our rental and hit the road. It was still a very nice vacation with tons of sightseeing up and down the west coast, but the warm and fuzzies were definitely gone. TL;DR: Enjoy your time in Russia and if both of you get really lucky you may live to see a time when the West comes to its senses, ousts its useless political elites and enters a peaceful and mutually beneficial partnership with Mother Russia instead of constantly antagonizing and poking the bear. That would be something worth striving for. Godspeed to you both!

I lived in America (New York) 1992-2004, Russia is much better . safe, affordable, beautiful, rarely race thing comes up, great honest genuine people, if they call you brother , all brotherly rules apply, even dying for you. loyalty and respect to another human being and life is still their main point in kid's upbringing as well as Christianity and family values.. and they are very intelligent with great (strange sometimes) but great sense of humor. on top of that if you get in trouble, let's say you get harassed , they won't pull out their phone to make a video , they'll run to help you.

About the racial thing or racism - Russia still has that education from the Soviet Union which says that every race is equal and there is no difference because the Soviet Union was formed from different countries and different nations and races. That was taught in every Soviet school right from the start when people were small kids. Russia today is still a federation with multiple nations and races in south and east and they all live together in a single country.

Вот это как раз и беспокоит, как правило, темнокожих людей в России. Кроме самых крупных городов, где темнокожие люди более-менее примелькались уже, везде они у нас в диковинку. И естественное любопытство ведёт к тому, что наши разглядывают их, "показывают пальцем" и т.д. И это неприятно. Конечно, реакция с обеих сторон естественна и понятна. Просто нужно понимать реалии данной местности. Я часто в транспорте (в Новосибирске, кстати) встречаю одного и того же парня очень темнокожего. Гораздо темнее, чем Виктория. И постоянно тянет его разглядывать, но старательно не делаю этого. :)
