I started eating sardines from looking into keto, and I adore them. I like the cheap ones in water, and then I add them to curry sauce! Toss in some boiled veggies and pour the whole thing over rice! I also love how soft they are. I'm healing from full-mouth dental extractions (getting implants), and mashed sardines have saved my life.

@@Edmund_Mallory_Hardgrove Technically yes. I'm not quite fully keto yet. I'm in the searching and planning stage at the moment, slowly adding more acceptable foods and not going back to the less acceptable ones. Rice is the hardest of all to let go of. I love curry and sushi.

@Edmund_Mallory_Hardgrove -- A good online dr I follow (sorry, I've forgotten if it's Dr Berg or just who) said rice is fine *if* you cook it the day before, and refrigerate it. By the second day its carbs are much less easily absorbed. I've been doing that awhile now, and my blood sugar doesn't react to 1-day-old (reheated) rice like it does to freshly cooked!! 😋

hi Dr., BOZ, I'm kind of new watching your videos and I don't see you talking about fruit, it must be because fruits are sugar bombs, i checked my glucose after eating a mango and my sugar was way up there so we decided to stop eating fruits, we also decided to ditch the fruit basket, when we feel like eating fruit we just walk the super market and get an apple or a peach , but only one now i eat sardines like twice a week, i prepare like sardine tacos with onions and cilantro and jalapenos but i use romaine lettuce no tortillas, beef tacos on romaine are not bad either. I think its great that i found you videos, my ac1 went down to 5.7 from 7.6 since last September my doctor says might cut down on my medicine if it gets lower. I wanted to thank you for all the effort and all the work you do. stay well, stay safe, and be happy

Almost incredible! I have barely heard about Dr Boz’s sardine fast and so was just now deciding to write my experience in the comments, when this video came up. See, I’m an American, who’s lived with my Norwegian wife, here in Norway for 40 years (!) and I think I’m very accurate when I say that I have eaten about 3-4 King Oscar sardines in extra virgin olive oil for an average of, say, 27 days a month all these years! I gave up other brands very quickly. Then here’s my “secret” for how I’ve loved them so much: I have a plastic storage box with cut up white onions handy and eat a few of these onion bits alongside the sardines and I simply love the flavor. (Take it from an “expert”!)

Make sure the olive oil in the can is (1) actual olive oil, and (2) if it is, make sure it's not some low grade version of olive oil. Just get them packed in water and drain them well. Omega-3's galore.

I have been eating King Oscar sardines since childhood. I have been working a few years at one of their many factories when they made them here in Norway. So did my mom a few year and my grandmother for most of her adult life, and they both got 95 and 97 years old before they passed away naturally. It is one of the cleanest fish you can eat today. No preservatives at all. Just pure wild caugth fish and virgin olive oil cooked in the tin can. If you have problems getting used to eating the Sardines(which is Atlantic Brisling named Sardines in the purpose of marketing), keep them in the fridge and eat them cold at once you take them out of the fridge. That reduce the smell some people don't like.

My Grandparents on my dad's side were both immigrants from Norway, so my dad and all the rest of us enjoyed King Oscar sardines for as long as I can remember. They are definitely the best tasting, but yes, a little bit on the higher price side. Do not buy the Aldi ones, as they are cheap and packed in soybean oil. There are other other great sardines out there too, but they are more 'sardiney' smelling.

I came across a KZbin video recipe that I think works with the carnivore diet and makes sardines taste delicious! 1 can cheap sardines, drained. Put sardines into a bowl and mash them up with a fork. Add three eggs and stir them into the sardines. I took the outer rings of a medium onion and diced them, melted some ghee and added the onions until they were translucent, then added salt & pepper to the eggs, mixed well, and poured into the pan where the onions were, mixed once again with the flipper to get an even distribution of the onions, covered and cooked for 2-3 minutes. Put the result on a plate and cut it up into bite size pieces. Delicious!

I love sardines. More specific King Oscar sardines. Another food that really brings up my ketones is egg salad. Just egg and mayo. 85g of sardines is 240 cal, 14g protein, 1g carb, and 20g of fat. 85g of egg salad is 223 cal, 8.7 protein, 1 carb, and 20g of fat. If you are worried about the mayo ingredients make your own. I know eggs are spendy right now but it's one of my favs. I make up an 18egg batch about every 3rd day. Now if I could keep the rest of the family out of it it would last longer. That is the best part about sardines. Nobody else will eat them. :)

Two things I find go well with Sardines, because many things don't, is Sea Salt and Apple Cider Vinegar. My routine is to add a couple of good pinches of Sea Salt, consume around half the tin and most of the salt, then add a lot of Apple Cider Vinegar, which finishes it off nicely. Almost two dishes in one in effect, and I look forward to it. I'm not a particular fan of anything that tastes too fish, but this works well and removes even the slightest hint of fish.

After 4 months of tracking my blood glucose with a Stello GCM I had plateaued with both reducing my BG and with weight loss. While my clothes were fitting better nothing else budged. And hitting the Dr. Boz ratio? Forget it. So I got fed up and decided to "go drastic" and do a three day sardine "fast". The results were very good. My BG came down, I lost 5 pounds, and I felt great. All I had were sardines with a little hot sauce, black coffee and tea, and water. What I noticed as well was some knee pain I'd been dealing with went away. I wouldn't want to do this every week, but I think I will do this once a month as a reset. I got my sardines at Costco, skinless and boneless in olive oil.

I lean heavily on octopus, Dorado, salmon, goat, picanha (rump tip), this chicken we call frango do campo and one day of some type of organ meat (usually ox tongue or oxtail or tripe or chicken feet or gizzards). I have phased out carbs from my diet and I eat fruit once in a blue moon. My meals are never before 1pm and never after 7pm. Hope that helps

Little fish are little concern to mercury and other stuff. it's the predatory bigger fish with more mercury and toxins from what I understand. Love Sardines and Kipper snacks!! I have to try with hot sauce thou, sounds amazing!

Sardines (in a can) are cooked at high temperature 1 to 3 times. The Omega 3 oil is ruined or mitigated. The speaker did not mention this nor the toxins from the plastic coatings inside the can.

Just like beer. Although I don't drink beer anymore. I had to aquire a taste to beer when I first tried it. Now sardines, I'm catholic. We eat fish a lot. So acquiring a taste for sardines was extremely easy. I love sardines right out of the can. Funny how many find it gross.

Dr Boz, I live in Portugal, yes you can buy Sardinhas in a tin and i do eat these, however nothing beats the Peixe Fresco cooked over coals, the oils keep the Sardinhas moist and incredibly flavoursome. There will be no yuck to the taste nor dodgy additives. These are bigger than the tinned Sardinhas so you need to watch for bones.

I don’t mind the taste! or the smell! I’m super tolerant, I think what I hate about sardines is the dryness. Same with tuna. I’ve heard a Brie fast is the new thing! 👍💯‼️❤

I'll try King Oscar. But I was alarmed to learn that a large percentage of olive oil sold throughout the world is counterfeit. It's really cheap canola oil (seed oil!) sold as expensive olive oil. So I get my sardines in water and warm them in the microwave with butter.

According to a few studies I found, canned fish contain practically no intact omega-3, same as fried fish. Only baked fish with certain temperature & duration limits was good. Hardly anyone ever talks about that.

I ate King Oscar Sardines for years but my TSH remained out of range (aprox 5.4 on my last 3 annual physicals). I discontinued them altogether and within a few months my TSH had moved back into range. Sardines do contain mercury so keep that in mind.

the life cycle of a sardine makes it not possible to farm so no artificial pellet fed. they are all wild eating their natural diet. they have a short life span and are low on the food chain so they don't concentrate mercury like a fish that eats other fish or has a long life span. about the only pollutant i would be concerned about would be micro plastics as they live in the modern ocean. microplastics are everywhere so not really an issue above any other food. Just make sure they are not packed in oil. i can only find them packed in soybean/canola oil. you can get them packed in water. legend has it you can get them packed in olive oil however then you also have to trust who ever supplied the oil is not lying. best to just get them in water. even 2000 years ago cheaper oils have been sold claiming to be olive oil.

Canned sardines are generally considered a healthy food choice. They are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, protein, vitamin D, and minerals like calcium, which contribute to overall health, including heart health and bone strength. However, there are certain situations where consuming sardines may not be advisable. One key concern is their purine content. Purines are naturally occurring substances found in many foods, including fish, meat, and some vegetables. When purines are broken down in the body, they produce uric acid. A high intake of purines can lead to elevated uric acid levels in the blood, potentially contributing to conditions such as gout. If you have a family history of gout or have been diagnosed with high uric acid levels, it may be wise to limit your intake of purine-rich foods, including canned sardines. It’s always best to consult with a healthcare professional or dietitian to determine the most suitable dietary choices for your specific health situation.
