With all the respect to Songtrust and the awesome services they're providing, but I have to share a little warning to indie-songwriters - think twice on adding KZbin content id option in Songtrust because after this your split in KZbin revenue will be decreased for additional portion Songtrust takes (yeah, songtrust is no free, they take 15%), your distributor is already gathering a revenue for you, you don't need it to do twice. CHEERS!

Distributors like Distrokid & Tunecore take 20% cut for Content ID. CD Baby takes 30%. You dont have to use the distributor's Content ID, you can just use Songtrust (they only take 15%).

Hello if don't add my content ID on either song trust or with any distributors then does that mean I have to wait for my youtube channel to get monetized and will get all the money directly from KZbin without any percentage CUT ?

If you don't use content ID through services like Songtrust or distributors, you'll have to wait to meet KZbin's Partner Program requirements to monetize your channel. Once monetized, you'll earn directly from KZbin without an extra percentage taken by third-party services, but you'll miss out on claiming revenue from others using your music on their channels.@@rustamali3854

The video description also reinforces that notion. But yeah, I see how that statement in the first few seconds of the video was ambiguous at best. He definitely could have phrased things differently to make it more clear. I suppose that was your intent with the comment.

I've noticed your older tracks on Beatport are signed to various record labels and then after them the rest of your releases are released via distrokid, did you have a bad experience releasing on record labels or could you say why you stop using labels? I'm debating if labels or self releasing is the best way to go. Thanks

Thank you SO much for your very clear and informative videos! I’m about to release my first song and my head is spinning after reading up on all the various organizations out there. I’m clear I need to register with ASCAP or BMI and am prepared to register with DistroKid. Would you kindly help me by clarifying: 1. I understand Song Trust puts songs on KZbin CID - as does DistroKid-- and collects foreign mechanical royalties -- as does DistroKid (correct?) - so why would I need Song Trust if I join just ASCAP and DistroKid? 2. Does Sound Exchange do the same thing as DistroKid, i.e., in terms of paying digital (and split) royalties, EXCEPT that DistroKid distributes the song? 3. I’ve heard of the Harry Fox Agency? What, if anything, does it do that the above don’t do? 4. Finally, If I register with ASCAP and DistroKid, will I be fully “covered,” i.e., get all the royalties to which i’m entitled and be “protected,” so to speak? I’d be so appreciative of help. I could use a little hand-holding! Thanks!!

So are you registering your song with “writer” being your legal name and then “artist” as your stage name (pseudo /aka)? I have noticed that my legal name and “stage/pseudo/artist” name both have different IPI numbers even though they are under the same BMI account. Will this complicate things with Songtrust? I’ve been given various advice on this. One of which was to use “artist name” as both writer and artist. But I’m concerned that this won’t then connect back to my legal name(which again had a different IPI) Any thoughts/advice is greatly appreciated 🙏🏻

Yes use the pseudonym as the artist name and your legal name as the writer. You want your writer money to be associated with your real name so you don’t have any confusion with taxes, checks, bank accounts etc. There maybe situations where you need to provide ID and you won’t be able to provide ID showing your pseudonym. Don’t worry that using different names will cause a mix up. It won’t. Because even though you have two separate IPI numbers, they are associated with each other. Again, you definitely want to use your legal name for your writer credits.

In the actual release, the music and lyric by Mr A.When you register in SongTrust, should you put Mr A or your name as a lawyer or representative? If the name doesn't match, what is going to be happening?

So the first is to register the copyright of the song in your own country, the second is to release the song with distrokid or tunecore or other music distributors, and the third is to register the song with songtrust after the song appears on Spotify, right?

It’s ok to have your song digitally distributed first where you can get your IRSC code unless you buy your IRSC codes for life So then once this is done then go to song trust and register? And why wait till you register with Spotify? You digital distribution will register your songs with Spotify- please explain?

I would just do the same process normally - you're going to have to make different songwriters names, one for each artist. I would suggest contacting Songtrust to get more information

Hi! Thank you for all your work!. I just have some questions: if I register on Songtrust, will i have the KZbin Content ID in every song that i upload with my ISRC in their platform since day one? I mean, with that one Time fee of $100 the content ID is included in all of my songs with no extra requirements or conditions? 'cause with distrokid you have to pay anually per song to keep It. I just want to make sure that i can replace distrokid's Content ID for the Songtrust's Content ID, and of course have all the other benefits. Sorry for the long post. Thanks in Advance! 🙏🏼

hi thank you for the informative video do you know what percentage of revenue songtrust takes from videos claimed on youtube through content id? also it seems that they automatically scan content ID for anything you register on songtrust, but what if I have released something with a record label and they are responsible for the song recording rights and I only want the performance and mechanical royalties for a specific song? and last, can I opt out of content ID claims for a specific piece whenever I want?

@@IAmBigKes you don’t have to go through them first. In theory, you should ONLY have to register your songs with Songtrust. They will then register your songs with whichever PRO you are associated with (BMI/ASCAP/SESAC). But again, that’s IN THEORY. In actual practice I have noticed that when I register songs only to Songtrust, they have not been making it to BMI. I’ve seen other people say they are having the same issue, so there seems to be an issue with the communication between Songtrust and BMI (I don’t know if this is the case with other PROs). My workaround is that I now register with BMI first. I wait for the ISWC # to generate with BMI (which could take a few days or up to a few weeks). After the song has an ISWC #, I then register the song with Songtrust.

@@RedStl Hey mate, thanks for the comment. That is exactly what I do, BMI first, wait for ISWC and then I go to songtrust. However, I have released my music to BMI and after some time I have also signed with songtrust which means when I registered my tracks to BMI I checked that I don't have a publishing company. After signing with songtrust I added my songs there as well. However, one of the songs I registered without checking the publishing company box on BMI got processed and is live on songview (bmi reprerotare) and songtrust is there. I guess they in the end do communicate between each other, right ?
