@@bookroach6742 now the most concerning part of this comment is the fact that I seriously have no idea what you are talking about. Not because I can't think of when stories 1 did the wild area better, but because you could argue EVERY area in stories 1 besides the dungeons was practically a better wild area, or you could be talking about that labyrinth in the post-game. When someone says what you just said and I have to respond with "yeah it did the wild area better but it did that several times which one are you talking about" we know that pokemon has a problem.

@@loturzelrestaurant I'm pretty sure the gen 7 ride pokemon are specifically trained for their job and they come to you when you signal them with the shiny thing your character holds up, so they're not unexplained or created out of nothing. It still doesn't change the fact that it's some random pokemon who you're not attached to, though. Something like MHS's field skills/ride actions would be really useful for Pokemon. Instead of tying them to moves, they can be inherent to the species or taught to a compatible Pokemon through some separate skill memory thing. Like in Stories, they could be context-sensitive or usable at any time, and I honestly think assigning a separate button to each skill would be a more flexible way of handling it than just having one button to use for whichever skill is relevant to what you're doing. Maybe the d-pad could be used.

One thing that gives Monster Hunter a huge leg up compared to most of creature games to give a more immersive experience is that the devs and design team have a huge understanding of real animals and apply that knowledge to world building and creature design. Not only do monster look cool and have special abilities, but those abilities are explained and used in ecology segments for every species. There’s also variation by gender, subspecies, and even age. The Monster Hunter universe is extremely immersive because they’re creatures feel like actual animals, which is something that not a lot of other designers consider when making a creature. For example, Paul Wes Anderson was criticized by the Design team for his initial diablos design for the live action film because he made the claws more like a carnivore instead of for a burrowing animal (diablos is also a herbivore) and he had to change it for the final product. While the monsters looked quite good in that film (except nerscylla), they did not act at all like they would in game based on their ecology, and that made tons of fans upset.

@@Ashamedofmypast I mean, I can’t really name any other monster collector that follows this rule though. SMT has a more supernatural setting that kind of treats it’s monsters as people (and most designs are humanoid) and Digimon has a digital setting that allows them to kinda do whatever that want with little to no justification or explanation. Even Spectrobes, one of my favorite monster collectors, does not give much insight to the monsters since they were all revived from fossils. Pokémon, due to its setting, has the most potential to follow Monster Hunter’s example of ecology, but the closest thing we have is the Pokédex and Pokédex entries are considered to be here say and laughingstock and don’t obey the natural laws of the world (magcargo being hotter than the sun). Comparatively, I could tell you about the entire life history of zinogre and brachydios from the information available in monster hunter games. It’s not necessary effort, but it is well noticed, especially to people in the wildlife/ecology field like myself.

If they made gym leaders based on gimmicks instead of types it would do so much for the games. Just imagine how great it would be for kids to see combos and advanced strategies in action and have the opportunity to show them how and why they work, and how satisfying it would be for them to figure out how to counter it with some nudging in the right direction. Unfortunately these games aren't made for kids, these games are made for long-addicted adults to auto pilot through.

I think we might get something like it in another 10 years, but not now. Game freak doesn't have the number of employees or talent on their team to pull off anything like that. The biggest factor is that they just pump out 1 game a year with only a single studio. Even CoD games would cycle between 2 or 3 studios giving each studio several years to make a game. That is why I am so confused that they are releasing the gen 4 remakes, which were farmed out to ILCA, so close to the Arceus game. They could have given themselves a whole extra year for arceus. But instead it comes in january, and this also canibalizes sales between the two games. Even third version releases back in the day waited a year. Hopefully they get a grip on the series, but I think they are confused about how to handle the sudden and hasty release of the switch console. We may not see a proper pokemon game ever again, but I think after the console is released they may go back to a complete pokemon game with national dex. We will see.

Even something as simple as changing your hairstyle are worlds apart when you compare MHSt 2 and SWSH: MHSt 2 gives you several style options (with more that you can unlock), a full colour spectrum, the ability to use two colours at once (via highlights), a preview option before saving the changes and all for free in your character's room. While in SWSH there are limited style options, only a handful of colours to choose from, no previews and all locked behind in game currency. How do you mess up such a basic system?

The time issue is especially agonising when you also include stat change text boxes being repeated multiple times per stats like with no retreats omni stat boost, the long Dynamax animations (which is especially aggravating when mega evolution and z moves both had cut down animation versions for online) or field effects like weather and terrain being applied ONE POKÉMON AT A TIME which frankly ate up so much time that the 20 minute timer in SWSH a became a problem and unfortunately many people took the issue with the timer itself rather than the deeper fundamental problems with the series.

This is exactly how I feel about people saying pokemon is great because it "respects players' time". Like almost everything on the Switch lets you jump in and out really quickly thanks to the sleep mode and the fast startup times, and a majority of games now have some form of autosave. People with little time will get through and enjoy a long and involved game as long as it's worth it. It's why Dragon Quest still does so well in Japan, even with a large amount of its audience being middle aged salarymen and the games usually being incredibly long. If pokemon needs to make xp share mandatory and let you just level to cap and max out your stats in order for the game to be fun and "respect your time", maybe it's because there's nothing worthwhile to do in the game at all and THAT is the problem.

Even old, obscure games like Jade Cocoon 2 have more quality than modern Pokémon games. In that game, you arrange and grow full formations of monsters based on the 4 elements. And that was 2001.

In Monster Rancher 4 you could not only combine Monsters, but customize their moves to add different types to them, which didn't just give you some rock-paper-scissors advantage but would actually modify the moves stats, not to mention you could take into account monsters' different elemental affinities (ex. Garu has a great affinity with fire, so putting fire on its moves would help a lot). Pokemon just looks like a low-budget mobile game when you compare it to pretty much any great monster raising game now.

I don't disagree with you about Legends, but at the same time, we've seen basically nothing. I guess we'll see tomorrow. But even still, they really can't take the Pokemon formula as it is, even with a little tweaking, and just throw it into a big open world that is like one giant wild area and think that will just fix the problems with the series. I really hope they don't actually have it in their heads that "big open world = successful game today". The problem is definitely not just the world design and the linearity of it. It's that everything from navigating the world, catching the pokemon, combat, and even the entire item system is exactly what it was 20 years ago on the freaking Game Boy - it's just all in 3D. The game has, ironically, not _evolved_ in interesting and dynamic ways the way you expect any successful series to over that kind of time. The graphics have changed a lot, sure. And they've added a few bells and whistles. One new battle gimmick with each gen that gets replaced in the next. But that's it. They've basically been giving themselves a facelift over and over for decades, thinking it makes them look as nice and fresh as all the other new shiny games coming out, but in reality, underneath that tightened skin is the same decrepit game that's been there the whole time. Anyone who's played games like Bugsnax or New Snap knows that there are ways of exploring the world and searching for Pokemon in their natural habitats could be expanded on and made to be so much more interesting and dynamic than just finding them awkwardly hovering around in just as awkward patches of grass like windup toys.

Also worth noting for that last point: the game does make a point to show you how to add genes onto your monsties, via the rite of channeling. This also helps with the idea of overcoming challenges, as it is another layer for the battle mechanics that one can utilize. Genes are new abilities, some passive (e.g., Critical Up L), some offensive (e.g. an Ice, Power-type ability that hits every enemy) that you can put onto any monstie. If you match up three of a kind (e.g. Three Ice genes in a row, or three power attacks) you get a damage bonus to the matching type. You can upgrade the gene What this does is it fluffs out the game a bit, the idea of building the perfect monstie for combat. It also encourages exploration of dens to encounter and obtain eggs of all kinds, since not every monstie has every gene. You can also upgrade the genes by channeling the same gene onto a monstie (e.g. Critical Up L + Critical Up L = CritUpL+). You can do this for both Passive and Offensive genes.

I don't think that quantity is the way to go in the first place. The dex cut would've been fine if we actually got 400 newly animated high quality models with smooth animations and extra attention to detail. But alas, they cut the dex and gave us nothing in return and that's the actual issue. Monster Hunter Stories has "only" 81 obtainable monsters but each of them apart from some subspecies are completely unique and their models are of high quality with the same awesome animations from the actual MH games as well as super cool kinship attack animations exclusive to Stories. One thing you didn't mention for the fourth point is that MHS2 has a Quick Finish system. If your Rider's level is high enough, and you've fought that monster once before and have beaten it, you can immediately end the battle right then and there by pressing ZL+ZR, as seen in the footage demonstrating the battle speed setting. This makes the grind to level 99 (which starts requiring over 20 million XP starting at level 96) so much more bearable, I cannot stress enough how much time was saved because of the ability to immediately end the battle, while still gaining materials and XP. Edit: MHS2 also has a catch-up feature, in which lower level monsties will gain boosted XP up until they catch up to where your Rider is. This allows you to almost instantly level a monstie (or an entirely new team of monsties) from level 1 to 50 in the postgame, which also helps with the Rite of Channeling in that some genes are locked off until level 30-40, depending on the monstie in question.

MHS 2 was a really facinating expirience. The first game was already really good, especially when you keep in mind it was on the 3DS. And MHS2 topped that in almost every regard. The only two downgrades compared to the first game: 1. I can't retype my Monsties anymore. 2. I miss a sorting function when going through my Monsties and equipment. The basic filter isn't enough in my opinion. But the raphics are on point. It is easier to work with the genes. The flying-riding is like absolute perfection. And to top all of this, the fighting system is super fun in single player. While in Stories1 it was partiallly random, which move the opponent monster chose, in Strories 2 they always follow a set pattern. You might struggle the first few times, but eventually you learn what they do and develop strategies that guarantee your win. At least for me this makes it super fun and satisfying to fight.

The only thing that keeps it from being absolutely perfect was the fact that they removed the element change mechanic from the first game. For those not in the know, if you gave your Monster a gene that boosts a specific element, not only would they appearance change, but their Kinship Attacks would also change appropriately to that element, so you could get essentially get up to 6 shiny versions of one monster as opposed to 1 shiny Pokemon. Pokemon is not going to change until they start making less money, which unfortunately is not now. At the end of the day, Pokemon is a business, a hugely successful one. Why would they pump more money into producing their games when they can put minimal effort and budget into them and still make billions? It's just simple economics.

I'm a hardcore pokemon fan, have been since the very original games. But playing MHS2 has literally changed the way I look at the pokemon series. MHS2 is easily one of my favorite games of all time, and you can tell that a LOT of love went into the game. I feel like I can never enjoy pokemon fully again just because I have something so much better to compare it to. Honestly it fills a void that pokemon hasn't been able to fill for many years- I'm glad that at least one "poketuber" has taken the time to actually call out how good this game is. Most of them have been avoiding it, I think because they don't want to admit that is does pokemon better than pokemon lol.

As someone who loves both the first and second game, I feel way more engaged into the combat than in Pokemon. There are tough battles where I have gotten my ass kicked and had to rethink my strategy, come back, and try again. Also, your Digimon follow you when you're running around. _All three of them_ in your front line.

This is why Pokemon Stadium 2 and XD are such amazing games. Even in-game characters take advantage of various mechanics and strageties. Like in the Gym Tower in Stadium 2, you have average trainers that use Defense Curl + Roll Out or Curse + Quick Attack. You have Team Rocket Grunts taking advantage of Toxic + Protect to wear your team down and Explosion to speed up to the end game. Red is using maxed out Hidden Powers on his Pokemon which you don't see any trainer using like that in the mainline games. XD has double battles with trainers using icy wind + Rock Slide/Headbutt, Own Tempo + Teeter Dance/Swagger and Roar + Hyper Beam/Blast Burn etc. You obviously have your Raindance + Thunder, Sunny Day + Solar Beam and your Follow Me + Belly Drum stuff even in Colosseum, but I don't recall seeing stuff like this in the mainline games. The only thing close to a stragety that is competent I remember is Viola with her Surskit using Water Sport to weaken Fire Attacks. Ironically fighting her with the fire starter gives you an disadvantage. This is why I love Viola and why she is the best and only memorable gymleader of Karlos.

Regarding battle speed: look at Persona 5. The game is as flashy as they come, and yet the combat is quick as lightning and smooth as silk. Skills that deal successive hits (like Hassou Tobi, a late game physical skill that can hit up to *eight* times) don't even have to pause to count the damage along the way!

1:55 I think if they increased Cut's accuracy from 90 to 100 it would have become actually quite a decent standard move. It has 30pp and 50 power which makes it an ideal move to finish off weak Pokémon to save pp on your stronger moves. Strength is actually quite a decent move at 80 power. Surf and Waterfall are actually top tier moves and were for a very long time the special and physical water type moves of choice. With Fly I think they should have reworked that to pretty much make it a flying equivelant of strength. It's actually quite a decent move but many people don't like the wait for the 2 turns.

Shin megami tensei 5 also comes out this November and looks incredible, especially for a switch exclusive. It's definitely not going for the same audience as pokemon though lol. I will vouch for monster sanctuary though, I ended up liking it a lot more than I expected. My only complaint is that the end game difficulty spikes up hard, but from what i understand they have ironed that out since I last played it and added more difficulty options that you can change anytime.

Pokemon could learn a lot of MH: Rise and World. The Monsters interact with You, the player, each other, AND the environment. Have you injured a Monster and it managed to get away? It's probably looking to eat, sleep, or both. You can find out where that will be and ambush it! Find 2 monsters that don't like each other? Lead one to the other and let them fight it out to give you an advantage on one. All this stuff could easily be in Pokemon.

in regards to exploration i think it would be cool if you unlocked overworld moves like in lgpe but they be type dependant like you could teach a fighting type rock smash (maybe even let you summon poké from your box?) it's also simple as, maybe i'm wrong but all it would take is creating a variable in the game to store each pokemon in the corresponding move slot (allowing to be changed via npc or etc.) that way the pokémon format wouldn't need to be changed. also great video!

I totally agree. You know since many years Pokemon is Pokemon Showdown and not the actual game for me. The game has so many flaws (as you often point out) but a such interesting combat system. Playing against a good player is really enjoyable. Of course AI can't predict, scoot for your set or have a game plan like a human, but still... The games are so easy. We should see better set (with 4 attacks !), entry hasard, more switches (the basis of the solo strategy), some trainers with gimmic strategies that you must prevent... All of the points in this video would make the games better, but I don't have hope. We talk about The Pokemon Company and Game Freak, not Capcom. They don't want quality, they want to make the slighest effort that can allow them to make money.

Let's not forget, MonHun Stories 2 added a feature where you can quickly skip battles all together if what you're battling is under leveled and can be one shot, saving even more time. And, in both versions of the game, you can quickly level up a new monster companion by using craftable exp food so they're closer to the level of your more experienced monsters, again removing pointless grinding time. I know Pokemon has rare candies, but those are rare and are basically useless if you're raising a pokemon from level 1. MHS, and MHS2 even more so, has really helped improve the one problem I had with RPGs: slow, boring grinding. It keeps everything great about RPGs but helps improve the time wasting areas.
