Excellent video and a very insightful review! The visuals and explanations for all the diesel systems were a great addition. I have my heart set on an E90 335d as my next daily. I plan on doing a full emissions delete and straight pipe exhaust, as well as a JR Stage 2.8 engine and trans tune with supporting mods (such as a bigger intercooler). Luckily I live in Michigan where we don't test for that, so I can get away with it! Thank you for all your 335d content, I've been watching all your videos and your content is fantastic! 👍

Great job covering the 335d common breakdowns. I had the harmonic balancer go on my 2011 in the first 7 months that I owned it. I looked at it from the perspective of buying another 100K since it was right then that it broke down. To be honest, I had been driving it very aggressively, so I probably broke it a bit earlier than it might have. The jerk who had the car before me may have let the effluent for the combiner go dry, because when I had the oil changed they said that they had never used so much. :-( I knew diesel was dirty, so I went through a process of cleaning the fuel tank, cleaning the injectors, upgrading to a detergent additive that added cetane = racing fuel, and then, just for giggles, I started using a biological agent (I guess oil has microbes? LOL) and finally I changed the fuel filter. So I am hoping that I have cleaned up some of the carbon build-up. Let me tell you though, the Power Service Kleen Diesel +cetane is an amazing product. I have the dose refined to a small water cup that I use as a measurer, because one bottle is six tanks full, at just over $1 per tank at Wal-Mart.

$101.9 (£72.00) in the UK for 13.1 Gallons of regular diesel. If you want the "good stuff", add an extra £3. As for the diesel emissions, luckily we don't have the stringent tests the U.S.A. have, so what we lose in fuel costs we more than make up with savings in the emissions department.

DPF is designed to trap soot whilst in built up areas and burn it off on the highway. A good tip to prolong its life is a biannual dose of "wynns diesel gold treatment" or something similar as it dissolves carbon, also good for valve seats and so on. There are many faults that with throw up a code to prevent active generation taking place, this is usually when the DPF problems begin. To fix this the fault must be identified/rectified, then some "gold treatment" in the tank for a few days normal driving to let the chemical work and a highway blast to clear the blockage and bring down DPF back pressure which will allow the active regeneration cycle to be enabled via BMW DIS or such. I have done a few of these, unless the DPF light is red there really is no reason to delete, plus DPF removal is illegal here in the UK. I repaired to my own e90 330D four years ago this way and never had any trouble since, and I drive only 14 miles to and from work each day at very modest speeds.

You cant compare mpg in a civic gas to a bmw diesel, in europe we both have egr and particulate filter. Carbon build up is mainly caused by not driving the car like a diesel. Too many cold starts short trips etc. If the car is driven right the problems should first show later in the cars life

@@FlyinGato - I concur - its the single biggest source of grief on the car whether its something serious like the EGR Cooler valve spring breaking or something relatively trivial like a level sensor failure in the DEF tank . . . doesn't affect the cars performance but leaves the CEL illuminated and costs a lot of fix (although now there are cheaper fixes out there than the BMW $2000 tank replacement fix)

Debatable. I don't think you can say that about diesels. It took USA emissions tests to reveal the the defeat system that was giving false emmissions readouts under testing conditions. VW had basically stated emissions figures that were a fraction of the real output figures under normal driving conditions by fitting a system that would change the output when under test conditions. They were cheating the tests and lying about how clean their diesels were, they failed USA emissions tests miserably once this was exposed and the real numbers became apparent. The interesting thing is , this system that effectively cheats the tests is not allowed in the US, but it is allowed in Europe. They get away with it by claiming it's fitted as a protection mechanism that stops the engine from being damaged under extreme loads or faults or whatever. This is intentionally used , knowingly as a way to mislead TO give false readings and has been proven to be the case with VW admitting they intentionally misled. But , despite this , they can still do this in Europe, and it has become apparent pretty much everyone is doing this in Europe. Even after all the scandal. USA however were having none of it. So there are actually a great many euro diesels that simply can't be sold in the USA, yet are common in Europe. We are now getting stung massive tax on diesels over here instead , to everyone's annoyance here in the UK after the government pushed everyone to get a diesel a dew years back , only to tax it to the hilt a few years later. You can't even drive one into many cities now including London without paying massive charges.

dpfs fail due to certain error codes in ecu stopping engine regenerationswirl flap errors maf errors,glow plug errors ,one of main parameters that affect regen is engine temp,it needs a minimum temp of 74c ,the main thermostat(opening temp 88c) is the culprit as these fail ,many cars in time never get up to temp and wont regen ,some border on regen temp and oil level can increase due to diesel contamination as fuel is added on exhaust stroke ..just saying

One (two) last thing I want to say about Manufacturers in general (sauf a few that try to resist but can't if they want to survive and not close shop) : - the whole "diesel polutes less therefore we will tax it less" in Europe (especially in France) was a lie. It was a major cover-up to make people buy "new" technology turbo diesel cars and bump sales up. Then… when sales caught up (and beat "reg gas" cars), the truth came out. Prices then started to come very close to each other at the pump. Even worse… people got stuck with vehicles that were overpriced when bought new and more expensive to maintain than "reg gas" ones. You can check, it's easy to do so. Compare the price of new cars between a 2.0 liter reg engine with a 2.0 tD, then check the difference in maintenance costs… add the ridiculously close prices at your fav gas station, then… you're stuck with a high-maintenance car that will annoy the heck out of riders stuck behind you. Even with your helmet closed, you can smell that stuff AND if you don't close that visor you get huge carbon particles thrown at your face (and eyes, quite dangerous, it happened to me)… The Gov't later admitted they lied about the numbers (what a shock, it made the news, then everyone forgot about that in less than a week because there was some big football game coming). - the second thing is the "xenon" lighting. Yes they're pretty, yes they make the road feel cooler (blue color, what a shock)… but that's about it. A good Halogen lighting will do a better jog at showing the road ahead and cost much… MUCH less. Another lie (this time from the showroom) to push people to buy this "it will be like daylight driving" costly option. I had to replace my left side balast… (the previous owner had something stupid done to the circuitry) ouch, my wallet sent an e-mail to my S2K on that one. All this to say… this : manufacturers DO influence lawmakers and bend numbers they "reveal" to the public. Just be smart about your choices and… enjoy tearing the tarmac the way YOU like it ! Anyway, sorry for all the ranting, but I don't like diesel for having been forced onto the market in Europe resulting in more cases of Asthma intown and riders having to wear protective eyewear inside their own helmets… enjoy the higher combustion efficiency though ;)

@FlyinGato 6 жыл бұрын
+G YO I also hate when the market is influenced by governments, so I can relate there. It's not really that you hate diesels, hey I don't like the smaller 4 bangers, it's that it was forced down the throats of consumers by European governments. In the US we had the opposite problem, CARB makes it very difficult to import diesels. In certain applications, diesels are great - mostly long distance mileage stuff, or in a truck. Gas is better in others.
@gyo1381
@gyo1381 6 жыл бұрын
FlyinGato agreed :) … wait… whaaaaat ? you don't like 4 bangers ? 1989, when the Vtec came out on the Civic and beat Renault (which was teamed up with Williams F1 and had come up with a street Clio version together) by a mile in power/displacement ratio ! Been driving a tuned 335d for 50K mikes and just now had the Harmonic Balancer (Crank Pulley) done -keep in mind you’ll need a special tool to remove that pulley. If you’re on Long Island, and want some info, my tech just went thru the process. Nice videos 👍🏼

Renato - did you replace your harmonic damper with an OEM part or did you upgrade using the Fluidampr unit available through AA Rodriguez? I have bought one of the Fluidampr units but haven't fitted it yet (waiting for warmer weather).

I live up in Ontario very close to JR Autotuning's shop and have found a local Indie shop in the area that is pretty good. This shop fitted a Bilstein B12 Pro-Kit for me and replaced all my rear sub-frame + various other bushings with Powerflex bushings for CD$1100 in labour which I considered very good. They also replaced my glow plugs, thermostat and water pump & serpentine belts very cost effectively so I'm considering simply taking it to them to have it done although from what I've read its a 2-3 hour DIY job which isn't too bad.

@@FlyinGato oops meant out of buying one. What about that stuff you can put in the diesel to clear out the engine? Seafoam or whatever it's called? I found a 2011 navy blue one with a tan interior for $13,000 and it only has 58k miles on it here in northern california. I was looking for an e43 3 or e92 m3 v8 until i saw the 335d had much better gas mileage and perhaps longer durability but not so sure now.

@Jagshemasher 3 жыл бұрын
@@worksmarter6418 - yes. I bought it new in 2010 and am still running it (210,000 km). Fun car but its had its issues. This is not a car to own unless its had a full delete - do that and it will be relatively trouble free but as they get older things like the valve cover gasket will fail . . . mine hasn't failed yet but I'm about to replace it while I am not actually using the car that much (COVID). Its a fairly major job but as I no longer need the car to get to work and back I can take my time doing the job. Running a BMW is not for people who don't have a decent disposable income because even if you do a lot of the work yourself, the parts are not cheap. We own a 2007 VW Rabbit, the 2010 BMW 335d and a 2017 Acura MDX. Maintenance costs on the Rabbit have been about 30% of what they have been for the BMW. . . . .although some of the cost for the BMW has been upgrading certain things - I have Bilstein suspension and a lot of urethane bushings replacing the stock rubber ones. I stalled Fluidampr harmonic balancer . . .the part alone was over USD500.

Pretty sure the only system this car uses in the US that it doesn't in Europe is the urea injection. Most cars and pretty much all diesels in the past 15 years have had EGRs. They can usually be cleaned, dealers of course push for a full replacement. And 4000 dollars for a DPF replacement? You people are insane! The dealers tell you this stuff is rocket science and you believe them lol

For anyone reading this who has no idea about the swirl flap delete, it costs about 40 bucks on fixmyvw.com and it was simple to do following bmac vag's video tutorial on it. When I did the delete I was astonished at how dangerous those swirling flaps seemed. One mechanical faiurel of one of these six swirl flappy things and you suddenly have bits of metal flying through your engine.

I would Recommend for the A6HP26Z....SL095 the Amsoil Signature Series Fuel-Efficient Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATLPK-EA) Do the Research.. It the only trans fluid i know of with many million mile nothing but every 100,000 mile changes no problems. You can change All the fluid your self by undoing the return (the cooler of the two) line.. but before you do that.. Drop the Pan, Clean all and magnet too, replace filter, replace pan, fill with same amount taken out, hook a vinyl see tru line to trans return line & place into a bucket say 2 gal. Start & watch fluid.. If it runs dry no worry shut off & add more fluid.. Start & watch the fluid color change.. The second this happens Shut off button everything back up & make sure level is good (Note: If you dont have a dip stick the same amount that came out goes back in) Now Drive and Fear Not about your trans.. you just put the Best insurance policy known to man inside your Trans. I'll say the same about the Diff use Amsoil Severe Gear® 75W-90 and Never worry about your diff or bearings.. Thanks guys & i am Seriously thinking about getting me a 335D and do or have done all the Mods.. What a Great Car and Hats off to FlyinGato for the Great Video!!

Didn't read any of the previous posts… sorry. However, being from Europe I know first hand what diesel CARS are all about… FRAUD. (and asthma) Diesel doesn't polute less… as a matter of fact "it" polutes more overall… and that FAP exhaust, like you had a really good hunch about… does NOTHING except cost more to the owner of the car… so… yeah, sorry. There is NO need for such torque numbers on a car when you know how to drive a regular car. If you need to move… rent a truck. If you transport people AND gear, it might make sense to drive a diesel… otherwise, please don't buy into marketing BS…

+G YO So the real reason I got diesel is because it's the best for long distance highway drives. The car is comfortable, has insane amounts of passing power, and gets me over 38 mpg with a range of 600 miles, which is perfect for me! The reason I tuned it is because, with the tune and mods, the car becomes dead reliable! As for other diesel cars, I don't like the little 4cyl diesel cars, I like the immense power of the inline 6 twin turbo. It's just a great package!

FlyinGato it is true that mpg is better on diesel… however, if I remember correctly, isn't diesel more expensive than reg gas in the US ? how does the ratio mpg/price per gallon compare between both reg gas and diesel ?
@Jagshemasher
@Jagshemasher 6 жыл бұрын
No gas powered BMW's run on regular gasoline - they all require premium 91 octane gas. In most places diesel is the same price or less than regular gasoline and certainly way less than premium gasoline. I am in Canada and diesel is cheaper than gasoline here . . . .at least most of the time
@gyo1381
@gyo1381 6 жыл бұрын
Jagshemasher What I meant by "reg gas" was "not diesel" as in English gas can be confused for many things ;) Anyway, when I lived in the US (quite a while back) diesel was more expensive than premium even more expensive than 93 octane in some cases. However, with market fluctuations, I was wondering if it were still the case. At that time only dual cab pick-up trucks would load on the stinky fuel.
