@@LandRoverDrive I have a RRS 2006 (similar to the Disco) and the previous owner got the air intake for the air compressor to be positioned in the trunk so that it doesn't suck in all the dirt and dust from below the car when it's driving. Seen lots of answers but here's what worked - first time Steering Angle Sensor - this was repaired with a plastic weld. The second time it was due to the Brake Switch. Still love my Discovery 3 - best and most useful vehicle I've had.

I’ve had mine for 2 years a 2005 lr3 146k miles & the only MAJOR problem I had was the brake system failed so I had to install a new brake line but other than that I did have to change the drive shaft bearing but was kinda easy, my drive shaft link failed so my truck wouldn’t stay in drive but that was also an easy fix and the part was only $40 , and my motor resistor went but that was a $20 part and fixed all these myself so if you can deal with the small problems that come with these trucks often then you’ll have no problems cause the truck is a great utility vehicle if it’s taking care of but I just wouldn’t say failures but when they get a lot of miles things just wear so it should be expected…great video too

Air compressor will not fail - the air dryer cap will because it has a design flaw where its molded into two peices and it will develop a leak. $70 for a alluminum cap on ebay and 30 mins of your time and you are sorted. I did that repair back in 2017 ;) - My 5 things list is, ash tray, glove box, air dryer cap for compressor, height sensors and parking sensors.
@LandRoverDrive
@LandRoverDrive 2 жыл бұрын
Air dryer cap is a good one, and yeah you could fix it. I drove too long with failure so I thought it was best to just to the replacement as I did not know the conditions of the piston and seals. With a new one I knew it would last for at least 7 more years. 🙂 Will try it out next time and do a service on the dryer it self. Ash try, I forgot that one... I have jammed it shut so have totally forgotten about it.

I’ve not had the air tank or the centre bearing (yet). Maybe the air tank corrosion is location/weather dependent. I think air struts and front lower control arms are more common than air tank and centre bearing.
@LandRoverDrive
@LandRoverDrive 3 жыл бұрын
Okay, yeah maybe. 🤔 Location and road conditions probably has a lot to say. And usage I would think. Control arms is a given. 😅 Air tank is definitely a salty roads problem like all the other rust issues we see here in Norway. From what I have learned there is a bit of salt on the roads in the UK as well. I had a rock get between the tank and the chassis after off-roading and I’m pretty sure it speeded up the whole process. 😊

The reason trucks are supposed to drain their air tanks daily is to get rid of any water in the tank, that’s what causes the tank to rust.
@LandRoverDrive
@LandRoverDrive 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Steven, do the truck have a drain plug? I noticed there was a plug on old air tank but not on the new. Never drained or heard of anyone draining it on the Discovery. Min rusted on the inside against the chassies as a rock, from a off-road day, had jammed in between the tank and the chassies. But good point, why you should drain your air compressor tank as well. I have had issues with my Tie Rods- so many Tie Rods. But I am running Larger tires. I would say the tank is more weather dependent- I Live near Washington DC and it has been fine for me- Not much snow or salt. Overall, My front suspension is robustly fragile- I would imagine it would be from the larger 4.4 V8 and Larger tires (not to mention off-roading/minor rock crawling etc)-
@LandRoverDrive
@LandRoverDrive 2 жыл бұрын
Weather and salt for sure. I guess the bigger tires is a big factor too. My front steering rods has been on for 6 years now and is starting to fail. Rear tie rods has been on for 5 years and still working as it should. I run "origigna" tires size or narroer so I guess they would last longer. Rock crawl i would guess puts a lot of strain on the undercarriage componets duo to the tire grip, angles and V8 torque. 🙂 I envy that V8 for sure. 👍

Yeah, for hard core rack crawl and offroad you could do that. There is a manufacturar who make full rocksliders that will cover that area all the way to the chassies. Yeah, air suspension ads another layer of problems. But that said, I'm running with the orignal springs, if they had been coils they would have been rusted away or broken off by now so I'm not sure what is best. If you have a fault code reader you can reset most of the faults out on the trip if you would get some issues so I feel pretty safe. A blown bag is probably the main major thing or another major leak issues. 🙂 Overland build is starting soon. 😉

The EGR valve - just blank them off - no need to even remove them - blanking kit easy fix $25 on e bay - that's what everyone who knows does - who changes just one wheel bearing???
@LandRoverDrive
@LandRoverDrive 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Joseph and thanks for watching. 👍 Blanking is an option but I have two arguments not to. First one is the obvious one, it’s not legal. Personally I want to keep my cars legal. 😱 Second reason, if you remove the butterfly valve and you get a runaway engine due to turbo failure, there is nothing that will stop it. And with a automatic gearbox I don’t like it due to the safety aspect. 🚗👨‍👩‍👧‍👧 So to others on here, do some research before blanking the EGR’s. For later models, 2007/08 and 2009 you need to do more than just adding the blanking plates and removing the butterfly valve. Not sure about 2007, so check the docs. 😉 Also if you got DPF, the EGR’s are used during the regenerating process. 🤓 When it comes to the wheel bearing, the front right had just been changed by the previous owner so you will have to ask him. 😉 It was one of the points in the ad when I bought it. 👍

I have side steps on my 07 model. I've done one side took step and plastic trim off and treated the sill with rust converter. I'd been waiting for the nice weather to finish the other side, but now it's here I've not had the spare time. I did the passenger side first as I was replacing the air reservoir so did it while the tank was out. Good luck with yours 😊

@@LandRoverDrive The passenger side that I did wasn't too bad at all really. All common wear failures on all heavy vehicles. Suspension A-arm bushings fail, just too heavy...especially the front, wheel bearings fail for the same reason on all vehicles. If you do get a flat tire, the winch for the spare tire can fail after a single use, it is complete garbage (should last the life of the vehicle). That bushing for the driveshaft can only be seen removing the heat shield. The drive shaft bearing if replacing the whole drive shaft, all parts are not created equal be cautious, and understand what you are ordering, FYI it is $300 -$500 for a shaft.
@LandRoverDrive
@LandRoverDrive 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, something has to give, and bushings is a "simple" fix. Spare tire winch has been used only once since I got it, it still works but I had to tighten it up after a while as the wheels was moving around. I wan't to get a spare weel carrier at the back but cost a bit to much still. Don't remember the cost exactly for the shaft but I have a spare one laying around so I'm set for the next 3-4 years. The one I put on 4 years ago is still working as it should.

@@LandRoverDrive It’s been proven Simon, that over time a petrol engine vehicle will cost less to run including fuel costs. This is because of the extra maintenance needed with Diesel engines. Also the original cost of the vehicle overall is less. Sure, a Diesel engined vehicle might get you twice the distance with a standard sized tank and cost a bit less at the pump but it’s false economy to say a petrol engined car costs more. I will make a coffee now and await the barrage of contradictions. Cheers 👍🏻🙏🏽😷🦘

@@grahameroberts8109 Coffee in hand but I’m not going to contradict you. I have actually just learned this, in the past year, and it makes so much sense when you start to think about it. The petrol engine is a much simpler design and less things that could fail. We got discussing this when my father in law bought a new Subaru with the 2.5 petrol. Was strange to me at first but after some research it’s made sense. 😊

Hehe, but I would say you were wrong. 😊 I’m driving on the original shocks from 2007, how many steel spring cars could say the same? 🤔 Remember the 2.7tonn weight. 😉 Air is actually super reliable if you service it. The reason for the compressor failing is my lack of services, and the air tank was me not checking it after off-roading and a rock was stuck between it and the chassis scraping away. So I will say it will fail on most cars because most people don’t bother to service it. 👍

Such a shame, carrying a Landrover badge, Landrover since 1948, it's just a crap SUV from TATA. Pose mobile for shopping, picking kids up. All farmers, builders etc who work a vehicle for a living and don't want any down time, buy a Toyota Hilux or Land Cruiser. That's why Toyota Hilux hold their value and these big daft SUVs don't, certain age, milage, just a barrel of grief. If you are going to have one of these, buy a brand new one, take it back under warranty, soon as that warranty runs out, bin it off.

Hehe I’m not going to start a Toyota vs Land Rover debate here. 😅 I love all, or almost, all cars, but with a hand of favorites and a brand in particular that I ended up on liking more than others. For a family car, a daily drive, a overlander and a off-roader all in one car the Discovery is really hard to beat. For a farmers work truck I would go for something a bit simpler and rugged like the cruiser. And I would definitely have driven a AT37 Cruiser, man that is an epic car. And I would not say no to a double cab 70 series. 👍😊 I would recommend getting a well serviced “TATA suv” that is some years old so that the major price drop is done. 7 years with the discovery and the price drop is about 130 000 NOK (10 000£) - Not bad for any car I would say. But I can only speak for Norwegian prices. 😊 Thanks for watching and commenting. 👍 Makes this channel more interesting.
