My daddy literally worked from daylight to way past dark. Farmed and ran a business on the farm. If anyone in our family (or even the community) needed help, dad was there. He dropped everything and just went. He sat up all night to keep my aunt from falling out of her wheelchair when she couldn't go to sleep. He even took in some of my cousins for a summer while my aunt divorced. She came packing a gun asking for help. Did not even phase daddy. Out of all of my family, he was the only one that said he wasn't afraid to defend them from their dad. He could shoot down a varmit way across the field. Oh, and he only had eyes for momma.

I'm 65 and live in the country. This morning my tractor wasn't working, so went looking for my 80 year old neighbor. Told him what it was doing... "take off the fuel bowl, clean and replace." Did that (I thought) it was better. A little later he was headed to town (to mow a yard for an "older gentleman who has cancer,") He stopped on his way to check on my progress, saw that I hadn't done it correctly and told me he didn't mean just take off the bulb he meant the bulb assembly, where it attatches to tank. I redid the job and there was a clog right where he said there would be. Going to run it now. (I offered to help him with the yard, he said, "no thanks his yard is tiny, I'll have it done in a few minutes, I left 'my little zero turn mower' at his house." I spent too many of my formative years in cities.

I remember the day I called my Mom to see how they were doing and I asked what my daddy was doing. She just calmly said "Oh, he just topping the neighbors pine trees" This is Georgia our pine trees are massive, topping means climbing and using a chain saw to cut out the top 10, 20 feet of the tree. He was 75 at that time.

Jesus was a carpenter by trade, and they didn't have today's power tools back then, so he was sturdy and thick: do most trade crafts today by hand (welding exempted) and you will feel it later. I don't think he was swol, just very sturdy, and I would not like to be on the receiving end of a ass-whoopin on the Temple steps.

Loved this monologue! The best news for me is that I’ve known and respected so many people who meet this description that I’ve become the next generation of redneck. Redneck isn’t an epithet, it’s a badge of honor for all people, regardless of ethnicity, religion, or creed.

You touched on the old man strength. We don't stop doing manual labor. I'm 60+ and weigh a buck 60. I still stack half barrels of beer on top of each other at work. Sextiles and quarter barrels are swung on to the opposite shoulder in mid stride. Working on farms and on construction sites from an early age teaches you how to get it done in the most efficient way.

Damn, inadvertently described my old ass. Yeah, I’m 53. Raised old school. Did the job of a grown man at 4 or got my ass beat. At 8, outworked 2 grown men and still got my ass beat. Not redneck flexing, my grandpa was the real man, he actually had to be careful when he shook a man’s hand. I’m not big, 5-10, shrunk 3 inches when I broke my back the second time. Doctors told me I’d never be able to walk or lift anything…I was 28. Nope, still do as much as I did then. Gave up on doctors. Broke my leg twice and a few other things since then, doctors never did any good so I don’t go anymore. Had a “cardiac episode” a couple years ago. When The Good Lord is ready to punch my card, I’m not going to argue but I’m still here. I wear glasses and that’s as close to a doctor as I’m getting. I’ll trust The Lords judgement on when He wants to deal with my goofy ass.

They have floats they use in the pond. Okay, now that ive set that up for you. Late afternoon when it time to prep for the cooking, the corn needs to soak before putting it on the coals. They don't go to the house to get "clean" water to soak it in, the put in in the water at the edge of the pond. 🤢
