If folks check South Korean History USA has a huge influence on South Korean culture. Anyone remember WWII AND THE KOREAN WAR? USA has always been baaically besties or close friends with South Korea.

I don't like the "copying" and some of the hypocrisy (trying to act black when some of them don't like black people) but I still love kpop. I never act like they're inventing their songs, in fact I am always clear to tell people that the reason I like kpop is because it is 90's American music, which was my jam! So I don't think the act of liking it means that you don't acknowledge it's discrepancies.
@teegraciela8 жыл бұрын
+Doris OK i mean to each their own. I like Red Velvet, i think their songs and videos are interesting but I don't really follow them- or any KPop artists. The esthetic, the cheesy pop beats- not for me. Plus I don't speak Korean so all lyrics are lost on me. Personal opinion.
@DorisClay8 жыл бұрын
+Somewhere Always Sure if you really just don't like the music then fine, it just seemed like from what you said in the video that you didn't like kpop just because it's copying other artists and "black style" or whatever. I agree with #2. Not to make it a race thing, but they literally steal stuff from African-American culture, especially in the music videos with their dreads, braids and stuff. It's so annoying!!! Some artists even hire black people to write their music, and they don't get any credit for what K-pop is today, since about 50% of it is influence from Beyonce, Drake, Rihanna and the other big cats... And *THEN* they act like they're rap connoisseurs!!! Eminem might be a really good rapper, but they only choose him and all they can say about black rappers is that they're "naturally good at it, but Eminem is better". Like wth. -.- HE ISN'T THE ONLY RAPPER!!! I've never really been a huge K-pop fan. I like a few songs from AKMU & Ailee, and the songs that I recognize just for the heck of it, but I really don't listen to it much. I like K-indie MUCh better.

Don't forget to mention that the dance choreographers and producers are often times Westerners, or more specifically Americans. I have actually met Koreans, especially those who are into the 'K-hiphop' scene (which is even worse than K-pop if you can believe it) who seem to believe that 'their' dance moves, or their music, or whatever else that is majorly influenced by Americans, is that it's this god sent gift. They ignore (maybe not ignore but forget) that all the ideas and concepts they're trying out originates from Americans, and more recently African Americans because hip hop and r&b seem to be the main concept for K-pop now. I have no hatred for K-pop because there are a few guilty pleasures of mine but if we're all honest with ourselves, K-pop/hiphop is nothing original.

I actually like Kpop back then because the music was good and yeah it's old school music from the 90s that I loved that was big time influenced by African American culture and music. After that when I was on soompi and noted how all these Kpop stars were all about looking as white as possible (the eye surgery, nose, then painting their face so white but you can clearly see their real skin colour on their neck and the girls trying to be childlike and cute) I was like "Ughhhhh I'm done" Haven't listened to Kpop in a decade or so.

Have you guys made it out to Seoul? If so, was it a completely different experience than in Daegu?
@teegraciela8 жыл бұрын
+Eso Terical I've been to Seoul quite a bit. It's a giant metropolis and thus has many stereotypical features. People say Seoulites are colder, I'm a city girl so o get it! It's fast paced and people are busy and don't have time haha. Nightlife is much different. Koreans dance more. I'm allowed into many clubs. The girls speak to me and not just avoid eye contact or stare in disgust. I think it being a big city + more foreigners allows me a bit more anonymity. Though others may have different feelings.
@g33senpai8 жыл бұрын
That sounds awesome! I didn't think it was still where they don't allow foreigners in certain clubs (that what it sounds like). All in all, hope you enjoy your time there! You should definitely keep posting vids for us who live vicariously through you! lol
@teegraciela8 жыл бұрын
+Eso Terical in my city especially- I'm only allowed in a handful of clubs- IF THAT. It's basically an unspoken rule (though people have been blatantly turned away and now we don't even bother) my friends were turned away somewhere just a few weeks ago. They say it's because foreigners "cause trouble". In Seoul clubs have said its because the staff doesn't speak English (assuming that the foreigners won't speak Korean I guess). 1,000 excuses to mask the truth "HEY WE'RE XENOPHOBIC RACISTS!" Lol
@g33senpai8 жыл бұрын
This comment was completely unnecessary. But, to reply, Africans are very accepting despite what you may think. There are MANY ex-pats that live in Ethiopia and South Africa (google it) and if the other nations weren't dealing with their own internal issues, I'm pretty sure the people would take them in as well. The fact that you blame racism/prejudice or whatever on the location, shows your ignorance and lack of humanity. My tolerance for typical people is very low so if you're going to be a troll, start your own comment thread.
@g33senpai8 жыл бұрын
Well . . it is HER video about HER experience, and she is black. If you actually watched videos about the black experience in Korea, majority show Korea in a very good light. As a matter of fact, no matter the country, black people try to highlight the good of that country. We expect the discrimination and, there is no need to explain that to anyone who doesn't want to take the time and understand WHY. Your opinion is null and invalid. And I have to get back to work so, later gator.
@HomoSiliconiens7 жыл бұрын
Most of the comments I hear from foreigners simply show how much they are ignorant of Korea. 1. One of you said that you do not like Korean food. I am native South Korean. I don't like a lot of Korean food. Some I like, but quite a lot I don't like. My family do not eat dog meat, and I don't eat pork, I don't eat raw fish, I don't eat anything that is raw or not cooked. I don't like American snacks... especially American candies and chocolates (or confectionaries) ... I never liked them. It would be a stupid question... why American snacks are so salty? So much sweet? Or so fatty or so rich of butter? You can buy salty chips as the American product, I guess you chose wrong ones because you did not understand the contents (or ingredients) listed on its label. I once watched an American English teacher who complained of Korean milk. He on his video said that Korean milk smells disgusting. Well, I do understand what he was saying. He actually took the brand of milk that I really hate too, because of its smell. But we have lots of different kinds and brands of milk too. And every each brand gives different taste/flavor (of milk). Not all Koreans like all Korean food. Everyone has his or her likes and dislikes. 2. I've never liked KPOP, but I like Korean music of 70s, 80s, 90s. Most modern KPOP songs are actually composed by Swedish musicians and they put Korean lyrics over them. It's no wonder these KPOPs have familiar beat and rhythm (and/or sound), and are oriented toward worldwide markets for younger generations. There are some younger Koreans who like KPOP, but considerable amount of native Koreans actually do not like KPOP either. 3. About Education I've watched lots of ignorant comments over Korean education system. Also lots of native Koreans complain of our educational system. Though North Korea has lots of natural resources (but petroleum or crude oil), in South Korea, we absolutely have no natural resources whatsoever. (We are even short of fresh water, so we cannot waste our invaluable fresh water just to flush used toilet paper. It's not because our plumbing system is bad, but because we designed our toilet to save fresh water resoruce, that's why we are providing bins to collect used toilet paper separately.) More than 75% of our grain/meat/fruit or agricultural produce are imported from overseas countries such as USA, Canada, Australia, Brazil, Chile, etc. If you have been sometime in Korea, you sure have noticed that most of Korean territory is mountainous, her weather/climate is so harsh, and cannot grow enough food to feed our own people. Without proper education for our children, future Korean generations simply cannot SURVIVE. Pressure on younger children (or generation) is unavoidable. 4. Yelling from Daegu people ... You remind me of one episode with one of my clients, from Australia. I once talked with her on the phone explaining of something about the work. After the talk, she asked me why I was yelling at her. I told her "I didn't." but she insisted that I did "yell at her." I am from Gyeongsang-do, and currently am very close to Daegu, just 20 to 30 miles away. People from Gyeongsang-do (with Daegu at its center) are notorious for their "loud or yelling-like" voice in daily conversation. 5. City Planning We do have "City Planning Department or Office" in every each local government, and Laws/Regulations for City Planning are very strict and tightly enforced. Trash bins are INTENTIONALLY removed in the publicly accessible places to prevent garbage from being piled up. All garbage should be brought back home and should be properly CLASSIFIED AND COLLECTED for recycling. There have been heated debates whether we should place trash bins in the public place. The majority of Korean citizens disapproved of placing trash bins in the public places. The debate is still going on, and recently Korean Ministry of Tourism announced that they decided to place some trash bins for the convenience of foreign tourists. Most roads or streets that do not have sidewalk have their own reasons. Those roads or streets that do not have sidewalks are those that were built way long ago even before we have motor vehicles to run on them. When we decided to pave them, there were not enough space for sidewalks... cannot expand the roads to accommodate sidewalks due to not enough budget. Note South Korea is a capitalist country. We cannot just buy in those expensive land to expand and make sidewalks. That's why we are building new cities in the new areas, and those narrow sidewalk-less roads and streets will be renovated when the corresponding residential blocks are reconstructed. Korea is highly dynamic. The Seoul 10 years ago is very different from the Seoul you see today. If you ever visit Korea again after ten or twenty years later, what you will see in future Korea would have become very different from what you see in Korea today.

I agree with you guys but when it comes to music, we can't really say that kpop copies this artist or that artist....they all influence one another, every single artist, no matter where he comes from, has been influenced by other artists. Music has been alive for such a long time, the first instruments were created like 50,000 years ago and up till now we have been influenced by it. No one copies anyone (obviously not talking about plagiarism xD)
@teegraciela8 жыл бұрын
+Catarina Sousa being influenced by and copying are not the same thing. kpop copies western music even down to the melodies of their songs and their cadence of singing/rapping. That is exactly plagiarism. Kpop/krap does it consistently.
@christinebronte81968 жыл бұрын
There is always a reason why every culture do things differently, that is why you have to always open your mind and go outside your comfort zone. My Korean friends can't stand American snacks. To them it's too savoury, salty and greasy. But we westerners don't notice that (I do, that's why I don't eat crisps, biscuits, cakes etc) personally I prefer Korean snacks, even though they might taste sweet the calorie is much lower than you think, and it's light. But sugar on garlic bread is wrong, although I've never had it. As for blandness or spiciness in Korean food, it really depends what restaurant you go to. If you go to cheap ma & pa Korean restaurant the quality will not be as good, that's same as kimchi. There are 200 different varieties of kimchi - many without chilli. The one you guys had is a very basic, cheap version. If u had the properly made kimchi it will not just taste salty or spicy it will have a lot more complex taste. And if you go to more up market Korean restaurant the flavours amazing - you get what you pay for. Just bear in mind your taste bud isn't used to it but within time it will and you will crave it if you don't have it. This is what happened to me. Also, it's ok to mention you don't enjoy Korean food - Koreans don't get offended. Since you're a foreigner, they don't expect you to like every Korean dish. Just be honest. Don't say you like Korean food in one channel and on another you say the opposite.... people in general don't appreciate lying.

I've lived in Korea for like 3 years and most foreigners become washed out and bitter after a couple of years. You can find sections on the Waygook forum dedicated just to for people rant and get things off their chest. Trust me, I know plenty of people of can't wait to get the fuck out of Korea but most of us our trying stick it out for an x amount of time for financial reasons. Overall, Korean culture just causes most foreigners to run for the hills even if they like the job. That's why most long timers laugh at people who desperately want to come to Asia, yea it seems nice from a naive and no experience perspective, but after time you get burned out.

+Woozi Baby gotcha! I see it a lot in Korea from little kids but to me it reflects on the parents. How do you fail to show your child people from around the world? I used to show my niece videos of Indian festivals and European landmarks because I want her to know the world. How a parent could fail to incorporate an entire skin tone into their child's education is really peculiar to me. In Asia or otherwise.

Ok everyone is influenced by other peoples music. That's why there are so many oldies remakes. Not every song is a knockoff of some American song or whatever. Plus korean artists are like the only ones that actually write and produce their own songs and don't hire people to do it for them. I don't think yall are given kpop idols enough credit.....:(

Those Korean Artist who do actually produce on their own are often not as popular as the ones who don't and hire others to do it for them.. Seems that even still no matter what, people still prefer the outer influences (almost specifically American) in Kpop.. wonder why.

well kpop isn't the only ones that copies as far as with music,i mean im not saying that they don't,they do and i heard songs that they copied from american singers like for ex:snsd with their song "run run devil" it originates from a song from kesha, but america singers also copys music from other singers too and try to be like other singers like try to copy their style/beat of music or fashion like nicki minaj tryna be like and look like lil kim or lady gaga that tries to copy madonna by trying to dress like her ect.)like wtf but back to what i was saying,everyone copies each other,u can't say it annoys or piss u off that kpop copies american music they're just "inspired" by american music, just like everyone else does,is that bad(?) everyone does it,not just kpop,american singers copy too weither its music,fashion,music videos ect.) i defend kpop cuz im a kpop lover and when there are things that r said and r not right or not 100% true i gotta say something 😊

@jennyexo-l50928 жыл бұрын
+jenny ibarra they are just copies of copies of music thats been done by other american singers,and as far as my love for kpop,it won't shadow my judgment to just side with only kpop so i agree with u on the fact "some" kpop bands copy american music but disagree with the fact kpop is the only ones that copy music from other genres,cuz its not true

Wow, with the exception of the sidewalks and the food comment none of these things were indicative of Korea that could be anywhere that you're talking about. But let's go into a little bit more detail. 1. seriously you're talking about people borrowing from artists being inspired by other artists? Have you not listened to the radio today- most of it is samples from other artists?! And you can bet if someone sampled something they had to pay for it. And you can't understand why black people like it? You obviously don't have ears-most of it is better than American pop music, better dancing and beautiful people. 2. I don't know where you're eating that you're having unflavored food or only spicy food but you need to venture out somewhere else. Seriously you are not in the US you will have to open your mind to other foods and flavors. 3. why would anyone talk to you if you don't speak the language? if a Korean came to the United States and went to Alabama they're not going to find many people who speak Korean they would have to know English. 4. I know you are not talking about anyone else's education system compared to the crappy one that the US has and how little you have to do to graduate. I could keep going but let's stop here.

It's suprising to me that you find kpop that copied music genre. True there's a lot of plagiarism but you can't deny american music doesn't. Or these so called "originals". Sound and beats move around and r reused soooo many times that u can't really say which is original and which is not. I think kpop still brings some new things to music genre and has definitely been very influencal for the music of new generation.
@teegraciela8 жыл бұрын
+marii_h -___________- you're trying really hard to make this a gray area. It's black or white. Kpop takes entire melodies, beats and sometimes lyrics from American (usually Black) artists. 😑

I can't say I agree or disagree about the things they hate about Korea. Why ? Because I have never been in Korea. I don't know why so much tell them to go back to their country or something like that. I mean guys... They didn't say they didn't like Korea. They even did a video about what they like about Korea too. So why so much hate ! I can understand that you are sad or disappointed because you had or have a different vision and opinion about things they say but that does not explain some comments. I saw comments that disagree with what they said and still stay polite. Why can everyone do the same ? Thank you for giving us your opinion even if as a person who enjoy Bang Bang Bang and some other kpop songs I didn't really understand why the fact that both songs looked alike bother you I mean people from all over the world use samples and even if I don't support plagiarism I still find interesting the fact that a tune or melody can have different lives and can give different feelings... Sorry for my broken English and Have a good Day everyone :)
@Mariel_ing8 жыл бұрын
I also didn't understand why you said that you don't understand how black people can listen to Kpop Well, I am black and even if I am not what we call a Kpop guru or fan, I don't think a skin color is what will tell you in advance what you are allowed to like or what you don't
@babieusagi_43388 жыл бұрын

How is Big Bang's Bang Bang Bang similar to Ay Bay Bay??? Bang ×3 follows with a beat drop while Ay Bay Bay repeats itself throughout the song. Sometimes Korean pop does take a lot from American pop, but this is just being plain butthurt smh
@teegraciela8 жыл бұрын
+Lamia Alasal the hook is the same cadence and beat in both songs. the beat drop in one copies the repetitive beat in the other. If I only copy one part of someone's essay- isn't it still plagiarism? You don't need to copy the entirety of something to still copy part of it.

the reason Kpop sounds like the 90's is because most of the Black producers from that era work with most artist's there, and yes the public is not aware because the government wants it that way. Their government helped create Hallyu to promote Korea They should however make it known that collaborAtion with Western cultures hasten in practice

Unfortunately, though, many western k-pop fans don't know where the musical interpretation directly derives from either. A lot of western k-pop fans tend to be stuck in a small bubble, and do not listen to a lot of music styles. I see an immense amount of hateful, ignorant comments online about western music, and these same fans have no idea that the k-pop song or entertainer they are currently listening to is an exact copy/sample from a particular western song or western entertainer. And, they are willing to fight to the death to prove otherwise.
