As a side note, the only people to ever touch my hair w/o asking have been black people. Idk what it is, but they act like they've never seen natural hair before. I appreciate this video so much. Some other black KZbinrs as you've stated already, refuse to say anything negative and realistic about South Korea. I seriously am considering visiting there and it is not helpful when people are not honest about what I may potentially experience. And to answer your question: yes it is important for my to have Black friends. I live in Seattle, WA, and there is a very small minority of Black ppl here even smaller than other US cities. I go out of my way to meet and interact with Black people and I've even created a meetup group. When I was younger I would argue that it didnt matter friends are friends, people are people. But as I've matured I've realized it does matter and I want friends who have experiences similar things to me in life and are able to understand things I've had to overcome from first-hand experience. Not just people who fake pity, empathy or tell me it's not a big deal when they have never actually experience it for themselves. Anyways, thanks for sharing and being honest!
@teegraciela8 жыл бұрын
+Arianna-Gabriele Marin thanks girl! I try not to judge KZbinrs who love Korea and only speak positively. But it's no coincidence that loving Korea and being 100% positive is more beneficial for your channels success- ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ . I did the same thing when I was younger- until I reached young adulthood and realized most of my friends had new clue where I come from or the struggles I deal with. There's a whole plethora of Black/Latina girls who have my interests and my racial/cultural background. So it makes things easier- though that isn't a requirement of friendship. Having a mixed bag of friends from diff walks of like is always best

i am in taiwan and the same shit happens. but i will say that it isn't exclusive to the black community. i have had this type of conversation with people from other races and backgrounds and they have had similar experiences. some ppl just don't want to fuck with their own. whether it be expats, whites, blacks etc. Some ppl go out of their way to avoid having to mix and mingle. I use to be really shy but now I just stare back until they get it. lol That photo things is soooo disrespectful! If it were a korean doing that to another korean all hell would break lose, but because we are foreigners... The xenophobia is really surprising as far as who it comes from in my experience. I feel like I have to defend people (myself) who have used the phrase "it feels like being a celebrity". It's not like I feel good because I'm stared at, it's just that I am going to be stared at, so how can I think positively about it?
@teegraciela8 жыл бұрын
+AjahKpop I think there's a difference between not allowing yourself to be bothered and presenting something in a positive light. SO that's where the issue rises for me. By saying you fee like a celebrity it puts a positive spin on an inappropriate act- IMHO. I totally respect folks who don't get bent out of shape over it but when we change the wording it makes Koreans seem without fault- again- in my humble opinion.

As a black female who grew up in a white suburban neighborhood (you know, the ones where you are lucky if there is 1 other black person in your class so you feel less awkward in Feb). I never really seek out black friends; generally speaking; what is more important is to find friends with similar interests and values; friends of good quality. Don't really care what your race is; if I like you, I like you. I know when I do have black friends; they have west Indian ancestry like myself...(I feel we relate better than African Americans) and also like anime/kpop/jpop/gaming etc. Just my 2 cents~~
@teegraciela8 жыл бұрын
+AyaneSensei maybe it's your lack of black connections growing up that makes that unimportant. I lived in predom AA/Latino neighborhoods and went to school as the token black girl. But I always had both growing up. There's no comparison between the two scenarios for me- I love being amongst people who understand me and my life in America. I have friends of all colors, races and ethnicities and obviously having things in common is the key to any genuine friendship. BUT there's a connection with black people (specifically black women) that I haven't felt from others. Others can sympathize with my feelings but can't empathize. It's a huge difference to me.
@ThatBlackPiano8 жыл бұрын
I agree 100%!!!

I agree so much. I go to a school the is predomantly black and I have like 2 black friends. I dont feel the need to seek out friends of the same race and it actually makes me sad that other people do. Also it's really hard to find black friends who like anime/kpop/kdramas as much as I do. Even though others see race I chose not to when it comes to picking friends.

I couldn't see myself actively seeking out other black people. Even now, I'm in Taiwan and I don't have any black friends here. (To be fair there are bases and things so I rarely every see black people. They are definitely not in my little countryside town) Anyway, I agreed with soooooo much in this video. @teegraciela8 жыл бұрын
+Cale Cale I don't understand why you keep watching videos about topics you dislike. ALSO, colonialism happened everywhere- Spain was included in this. It's VERY important. Though White Europeans (And Americans) tell us otherwise. Moreover, "negritud" is absolutely a word in Spanish that carries the same sentiments as in English. Try again.

I just don't get it why go to a foreign country and its not a lot of black people?if you wanted to be in a country with black people then why don't you go to uk or stay in America? And wouldn't this video give foreigners bad Im just asking not trying to be rude I'm black myself and a lot of blacks say I'm a Oreo so I don't have a connection of blackness sadly
@teegraciela8 жыл бұрын
+Unicorn Puppy "I don't have a connection to blackness" that's a really dumb statement. I'm called an Oreo. But I'm aware I'm black, I learn about my history and I stay in tune with problems my people face. being "connected" is a personal choice. Also, listening comprehension is like soooooooo important but you seemed to have missed it. 1) black people are everywhere 2) there ARE black people in Korea 3) I never said I needed ONLY black people. Koreans go to America- they find other Koreans. That's cool. No one tells them to leave and go back to Korea because they want Koreans. You seem to suffer from brainwashing. We all do at one point or another but I hope you unplug from the matrix and realize there isn't such a thing as being an Oreo. You're black. You're always gonna be black. People are going to treat you as black- no matter how "Oreo"-Esque you are and maybe once you accept that you can open the door to the spectrum of "Blackness" whatever you consider that. Usually being an Oreo means you don't like "urban" things and are around white people- you're not a unicorn. there are a ton of black people in tune with their "blackness" who fit that bill. Not "feeling" Black is a choice you are making. I suggest you start with figuring out why you've chosen to disconnect.

+Unicorn Puppy ohhhh *hugs you* that explains it! DON'T LET ANYONE DENY YOUR BLACKNESS! Don't be convinced that Blackness looks one way. It doesn't!!!! "They" what you to believe that Blackness is poverty, ignorance, hip hop and violence- IT'S NOT! I was poor, lived in a predominantly Black area and was called an Oreo because I got good grades, had strict parents, a few white friends and a squeaky voice. People are dumb. I'm Black. Blackity Black Black and I love it! Find Black bloggers who fit your interests. I'm certain they exist! Try to look up some Black authors. Read some literature outside of school. I know in school and in media you'll only see one image of Blackness. I promise you there is more! It's a spectrum and whoever you are, whatever your interests as long as you connect with the history of your people and honor that history- you WILL be connected to it. And more importantly you will bring your own unique addition to the image of "What Is Black".

Alright so I understand and everything but if you're so big on being surrounded by black people and all that good stuff, why move to a country full of the complete opposite race? I just don't get it.. And I'm sure you did your research on being black in Korea or just Asia in general, so I'm sure you knew what to expect...... ????? I'm really not trying to be rude here, I respect you and everything, just not sure why you seem like this wasn't what you signed up for.

+Jojo Howard I never mentioned ONLY wanting to be around Black people. Also, I'm not sure if you watched through the end but around the 9:11 I address people with your viewpoint. Thanks for watching!
