He’s produced tracks for some of the most acclaimed names in music, has a family lineage that traces back to jazz legends and has even inspired one of the most polarizing albums in Radiohead’s discography. This is 5 facts you didn’t know about, Flying Lotus.
Steven Ellison AKA Flying Lotus first began to make a name for himself in music when his mother encouraged him to enter an Adult Swim songwriting competition. The network accepted his songs and broadcast his instrumentals all over their channel, utilizing his work in everything from show theme songs to promotional advertisements. With these endorsements, The popular Cartoon Network affiliate had a major hand in establishing Flying Lotus as an artist to pay attention in underground music and ultimately helped jumpstart his early career.
Music has always played a major role throughout Flying Lotus’s family. He is the grand nephew of the legendary jazz pianist Alice Coltrane, whose husband was the genre-defining John Coltrane. Steven is also the grandson of famed songwriter Marilyn Mcleod, who had her hand in writing R&B hits for the likes of Diana Ross, and Freda Payne. All three relatives have played a big role in influencing his approach to music throughout his career.
Throughout his career thus far, Flying lotus has worked with a number of standout artists including the likes of Erykah Badu, Burial, Herbie Hancock, and Kendrick Lamar just to name a few. He most notably, influenced Radiohead frontman, Thom Yorke’s approach to songwriting. After the band watched Flying Lotus open for the them in 2010 Thom said “We watched him with his live setup performing all his loops and thought, ‘Well that’s interesting.”,because it’s a live performance, he’s improvising.” This process would go on to be the foundation of the bands 2011 studio album “The King of Limbs” and is still a source of inspiration for Thom, as he told press that the same method inspired his yet to be his announced solo project.
With a deep rooted love for Hip Hop, it was only a matter of time before Flying Lotus made a Hip Hop album, and in 2012 he delivered with the Duality. This new project wasn’t released under ‘Flying Lotus’ however, but a new anonymous moniker - Captain Murphy. At the time of release, no one new who the man disguised under the nickname actually was, and Due to the morbid tonE of the record, fans began to speculate that the Captain was Tyler, the Creator or Earl Sweatshirt. But rumors soon were put to rest in late 2012 when media and hardcore fan pressed Captain Murphy enough to sway Steven’s choice to remain anonymous. Although the mystery behind the persona has since been dissolved, Duality enthusiasts are still hoping to get a new Captain Murphy record one day.
With the exception of his first two releases, the entirety of Flying Lotus’s discography is heavily shrouded in high concept. Cosmogramma draws conceptually on lucid dreaming and out-of-body experiences. Until the Quiet Come recounts an ethereal journey Flying Lotus conceived while imagining himself in the process of astral projection. You’re Dead is about about dying and embracing an afterlife. His latest album, Flamagra, is a thematic idea about a lingering concept about fire - a refuge for pain and trying to make the most out of it.
