Is KIDS SEE GHOSTS the Next Psychedelic Movement?
It’s no secret that the counterculture of the 1960’s had an enormous impact on our world. It was a movement defined by love, passion for music, and of course, the use of psychedelics. 50 years later, that movement has manifested itself into the latest collaborative effort between Kid Cudi and Kanye West, KIDS SEE GHOSTS.
KIDS SEE GHOSTS, is a major departure for both Kid Cudi and Kanye West musically. With a radiant mix of emotion, atmosphere, and genre, their self-titled debut album is a captivating exercise in bringing a psychedelic experimental sound into mainstream music. Even the cover artwork features surreal imagery that closely represents the sonic nature of the album. It was created by Takashi Murakami, a renowned contemporary artist whose psychedelic influences can be seen throughout his artwork. Murakami first collaborated with Kanye to design the Graduation album cover, and direct the music video for ‘Good Morning’. In the video we got our first look at the ghost character that reappears on the KIDS SEE GHOSTS album artwork.
It should come as no surprise that Kanye and Cudi would have a psychedelic artist design their album cover. Prior to the release of KIDS SEE GHOSTS, they’ve both brought up their use of psychedelics in their music. On the track, Yikes, from Kanye’s 8th studio album, he mentions his use of DMT and 2CB. Kid Cudi has also gone on record to have experimented with numerous psychedelics. On Travis Scott’s through the late night, Cudi explicitly mentions his use of DMT and LSD.
Psychedelic usage isn’t the only aspect of the 1960’s that’s found its way into Cudi and Kanye’s message. Love and the importance of being in the present were also core values of that generation. Since returning to the public eye, Kanye has continuously tried to spread the message of loving everyone, whether you agree or disagree with them.
These ideas play a major role in the sound, and lyrical content of KIDS SEE GHOSTS. On the track Cudi Montage, Kanye expresses that violence is a cycle and that we’ll never have peace until people let go of their animosity towards others, or as he put it, love everyone.
Living in the moment, or the mantra Be Here Now as popularized by spiritual leader, Ram Dass, was another big theme of the 60’s. This state of mind is represented on KIDS SEE GHOSTS by Kanye and Cudi letting go of their past struggles and moving on. In 2016, Cudi checked himself into rehab in order to overcome his struggles with depression. [Play Cudi Interview] In the same year, Kanye was hospitalized after a mental breakdown leading to his diagnosis with bipolar disorder. The track Reborn is a direct response to these events in which Cudi voices the distracting thoughts that enter his mind, while repeatedly returning to “Keep movin’ forward” in a mantra-like way.
In the 60’s, Eastern philosophy made its way into western culture. Famous artists such as The Beatles and The Beach Boys, sought-after guidance from spiritual advisors like Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Kanye appears to have similarly been inspired by Eastern culture. He tweeted a picture of Amma Mata, a Hindu spiritual leader from India who stresses the importance of qualities such as compassion, patience, and forgiveness. All of which are qualities that Kanye and Cudi exemplified on KIDS SEE GHOSTS.
The psychedelic movement of the 60’s revolutionized art, and paved the way for new genres of music. With Kanye West and Kid Cudi’s KIDS SEE GHOSTS experimenting with psychedelic themes in the mainstream, perhaps it won’t be long before it inspires others to discover new ideas, or a whole new generation of music.

a kid named cudi was one of the first big mixtapes that mixed elements of rap and rock and which included singing. In 2008 50 cent was huge and none of the melodic rapping existed. Cudi had songs like Heaven at Night produced by Ratatat which were super psychedelic and talked about drugs, feelings, and explored sounds pretty much uncovered in hip hop until then

Juan Martinez well, they echo all the other smh exp. cuz smh is like a telephone number to call up other dimensions. But just like ye's verse I felt I saw where we go when we die. But I left America as a drug addicted North Philly scumbag and now I'm in school to be a fireman and I dontbdo heroin anymore. I did sapo, yopo, dmt, ayahuasca and san Pedro why I was there. Since then I've realized I could've just gone on the dark web and ordered dmt and that would've saved me a lot of money, but I made a lot of friends while there so it was an amazing experience all together. I feel everyone should do smh before they die because it put a lot in perspective for me I'm no longer violent as well. 👌🤓

You've got a whole new world to crack open my young one. You're on a good track and I absolutely 100% support you and put forth all the blessing I can from every depth of my soul. The infinite oneness that occurs simultaneously in the past, present, & future is to only to be experienced once you "consume the flesh of god". You will see how life strives towards the Ebb & Flow that is Phi (also expressed as Φ) and is encompassed by the continuing of "eternity" that is Pi (expressed as π).

I've been thinking about this a lot and I think the whole idea about kids seeing ghosts comes from psychedelics. When you're tripping, a lot of people have have stated that they felt like a kid again, letting go of their old ways of thinking and looking at things in a new light (From ghost Town: Once again I am a child. Ive let go, of everything that I know, and nothing hurts anymore!) and that the ghosts could be all of the things that adults are completely unaware of through years and years of conditioning of whats normal in the world.
