The lith ion batts make the Mini interesting by itself. The ability to just leave them charged is a huge advantage. I love my M2 Zoom, but because of the limitations of lipos you have to plan ahead to fly. The lith ions mean I could leave the bats on the charger, look out the window and see it is a nice afternoon and just grab and go to the park and fly....this alone makes the mini a tempting buy and don’t think it is talked about enough as a advantage to this drone.
@Dronevalley

Tom, I agree and it's why I wanted to add it to this clip. I love that they moved to the Li-ion cells in the Mavic Mini and it does help to make it a grab-and-go quad. I appreciate you posting and hope you'll stop back for more content soon. Rick

Leaving Li-Ion batteries on the charger, or indeed storing them at full charge, is not a good idea, That's why eBike owners commonly will charge their batteries to 80% to prolong their life span, and there is a lot of discussion on this among Tesla owners. 'Battery University', and GRIN technologies websites are good resources for this subject.
@Dronevalley
@Dronevalley 4 жыл бұрын
@@MountainParameters Thanks for the post but Li-Ion cells are in most of the portable electronics on the market today including cell phones (some) and laptops and all of this gear is constantly being charged. In larger devices like cars (Tesla) and E-bikes and scooters it's good battery maintenance to keep them around 80% but with these smaller devices the batteries are being charged more often so the "wear leveling" is less of an issue because folks will burn through their 2000 re-charge cycles pretty quickly. These drones also have a faster and deeper discharge cycle than most other gear and this roughs the cells up a lot too. Stop back soon for more content I'll be posting this week. Rick
@MountainParameters

@@Dronevalley Thanks Rick, that's a great quick reply. I am as guilty as most, and do all the wrong things when recharging my phone (like leaving it one when charging), and drone battery. As a result, I accept that I will have to replace them sooner, rather than later. I think that as users, we accept that dynamic for smaller items. But when an good 52v eBike battery that uses 70 expensive cells is considered, it's no wonder that companies such as GRIN bring out smart chargers that you can set to change your SOC (Sate of Charge), which in turn will give you many more charge cycles at 80% than if your charged it to 100% SOC. The problem with our drone batteries is we cannot simply set our charger to 80% in order to take advantage of that. That's why I'm excited about the prospect of the possibility of perhaps being able to rebuild the Mavic Mini battery using 18650 cells and a spot welder.

I have enjoyed your videos for years. I have had many drones over the years, I decided to pick up one of these Mavic Mini's for those times when I don't want to drag around 20-30 lbs of gear on a hike or a long trip. So far I am pretty happy with the MM. I wanted to tell you of a cool thing I discovered while messing with the 3 bay battery charger and the controller. I had the controller plugged into the 3 bay charger and I needed to go. As I unplugged the charger from the wall plug I noticed that the controller was still charging. It seems that DJI made this battery bank a power source as well as a charger station. This is cool if you are out and about and you have several charged batteries in your possession and your controller starts to get low on power you can use the battery charger as a power source to give the controller some juice. The other application I could see this working for is to charge a phone or tablet. Pretty cool technology! thanks again for all the videos! Cheers!! Michael

Great video!! I think all that's missing in this discussion is the video is 2.7K vs. full 4K in the mavic pro. Our videos are 4K, so this would mean increasing the scaling of these clips. Have you found that 2.7K when scaled up to 4K is still very sharp, not much different? Thanks!

Thank you for the informative and clear tips! Well articulated, and helpful. Being that KZbin is all about feedback, improvement, and support I thought I’d provide a suggestion to change your camera angles and cropping. There is a significant amount of dead space in your framing that could be better used to see specifically what you are pointing out. I would recommend you drop your camera height, and move the camera a bit closer.

I just got my Mavic mini last night. I was so excited when I relized you could plug in the hub, then plug in the controller all at once. Only to find out it charges each battery one at a time. Great for the hub, but it also means that no matter what, the control is last to charge. bummer as id want the control to charge at the same time as the hub batteries, that way I can charge a flight battery and the control and go fly. I might look into buying that 3 way cable just so i can do that! Thanks for the tips.
@Dronevalley

I appreciate the post and the challenge is both the logic of the charger and the limitation of the fast-charging standard since it only allows fast-charging to a single device at a time. The cable I discussed will allow you to charge all three devices at the same time but it can't fast-charge them. Even still, they will all be ready pretty quickly. We have plenty of the cables in stock and can have one to you in a few days if you decide to make the purchase. Thanks, Rick

@jollyrogerhobbies2386
@jollyrogerhobbies2386 4 жыл бұрын
@@GorillamansGarage I think you miss understood me. Fast charging is great. What I meant was when you plug the hub into the wall and then piggy back the controller off the hub, the smart charger charges the least drained battery first. Then moves to the next least drained. Then the last battery. Finally it will then charge the controller. It will not do it all at the same time which is a bummer. It's just not capable of it. However you can plug in the hub to the supplier brick and charge it, the plug in the controller to a separate supplier and charge at the same time. I can buy that cord from drone valley and charge my phone, hub, and controller all at once. The down side is that it Will not be able to fast charge. So each option has its advantages and disadvantages.

Another great video Rick, I always enjoy your content. 👊🏼 Question though, I have a Spark as well and use a lipo bag when im charging my batteries, so since the mini’s batteries are Lithium-Ion does that mean there is no need for the lipo bag while charging? 🤷🏻‍♂️ no crazy fire danger? I have been flying my mini for about 10 days and I am very happy with the purchase and it is definitely an upgrade from the Spark. 👍🏼

You really got my attention when you mentioned the battery pack probably contains 2 18650 cells. As I have a spot welder and build my own eBike battery packs, of course my first thought was whether I'd be able to rebuild these packs by swapping out the 18650 cells, which would then mean your cost to rebuild a pack may be in the order of $15.00. When you said you may tear down that battery pack in future, then that doubly got my attention, I am greatly looking forward to that!

I have had my mini for a couple of months. I recently found an "Easter egg" in the Quick Shot features. I found that you can designated a non-person target by using a 2-finger pinch on random places on the screen. I haven't found any reference to this being an actual feature. I used this to designate a flagpole as the target for an orbit quick shot.

@Drone Valley Rick - Since you're an electrical engineer and already produce a line of custom drone accessories, I think there's a possible opportunity for you with the Mavic Mini. I recently watched a YT video of a guy who disassembled the MM battery. Yes, it uses standard 18650 cells. If you offered replacement MM battery case 'kits' that would accept standard non-solder slide-in cells I think you'd have a great Drone Valley seller. Not sure if it's feasible, or even legal, since the MM battery case incorporates DJI's "intelligent" battery circuitry, but it would be fantastic for many of us Mavic Mini owners. I would certainly buy one or 2 or 3 from you since importing lithium-based batteries here in Thailand is getting more and more difficult due to ridiculous import restrictions. Anyway just a suggestion. Merry Christmas from Thailand!

I'm still waiting for my Mavic Mini to show up (pre-ordered on Nov.2nd), but I was thinking of using my Anker 20,000mAh, 18W QuickCharge 3.0 battery bank to charge everything at once... Using the QC3 port for the 3 battery charger, USB A for the remote, and another USB A for my phone. The specs say it can charge at full speed simultaneously on all ports. It looks like each of the three drone batteries has 2600mAh of capacity, the remote battery is another 2600mAh, and my phone has a 4000mAh battery, so technically I could charge all of these from empty and still have 25% left in the battery bank.

I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere in any of the Mavic Mini KZbin videos I've watched that you MUST APPLY FOR DJI CARE REFRESH WITHIN 48 HOURS AFTER ACTIVATING YOUR DRONE! If you don't (I didn't), you'll have to apply and get accepted for after activation purchase. This requires that you make a video following strict guidelines showing various parts and aspects of your Mavic Mini. They provide you with a link to instructions and a video. It's additional insurance at a cost of $39 (US) that: "Provides two replacement units for a small additional charge in one year and covers a wide variety of accidents, giving you greater peace of mind."

Great video info. Do you think the iPad mini 5 would also fit the Mavic Mini controller?

I keep getting drawn to this little drone, but I just received my Air 2, and frankly, I’m not sure if buying the Mini wouldn’t be a step backwards. Your thoughts, please. Thank you.

In you example with the charger where you got three batteries and the controller connected to the charger. If you press and hold the button on the charger it changes to "charge external device priority". Meaning - it would first charge the controller - then the batteries. There is a tiny sticker on the charger with even tinier print that explains this.

Jarl, thanks for the post but please remember that I posted this clip a year ago and well before the Mavic Mini was released. At the time I had a "beta" version of the drone and the firmware with no manuals. I was exploring it for the first time and missed the external charging trick. Once the official version was released I realized the procedure and explained it in follow-up clips. I hope you enjoyed the video and please stop back for more I'll be posting this week. Rick

Thanks for another informative video. I attached my Apple iPhone charging cable from the Mavic 2 Pro controller (USB slot) and my iPad Mini 4 and it worked but the cable was far too long. So I've ordered Mavic Mini Charging Cable Kit as described in the video from Amazon. Hopefully it will work on both my Mini and Mavic 2 Pro.

My experience and reading is that deep discharge of Lithium Ion reduces charge cycles. Say 200 for deep vs 1500-2000 50-75٪ Also best stored 50-75%

Thanks for the post but it's a little different between the Mavic Mini and the other DJI quads. Most DJI quads use LiPo cells and are "intelligent" which means they regulate the charging and discharging. With these cells you should store them at between 20-35% on average to minimize the chemical reactions. With the Mavic Mini DJI is using Li-Ion cells with no internal controller and these cells have no memory effect and can be drawn down to 15% or so with no harmful effects. They are also less expensive and have a limited charge/recharge cycle of about 500 (or less if abused) cycles. I hope that helps! Rick

What is the price difference between basic pack and buying all the other items that will make up the fly more version in cost?. Eg. Battery multi charger, 2 more batteries, extra props ect... that would be a great video.

Hi Rick, thank you for your helpful videos! Is there a way to adjust the gimbal control speed on the wheel? (alt is to use the touchscreen - but difficult when out in cold weather).

Video caching could be a critical tool in recovering a lost drone its a way of re enacting the flight of the drone and possibly location without having the drone. If the video is only on the drone than you wont be able to use it to help recover the drone if its lost or in a tree.

The black charging cable seems to be much thinner, thus resulting in a voltage drop when you have all these devices connected. That makes the charging time even longer time. The original white cable are much thicker, enable more current to pass through without a voltage drop.

Very useful tips, the touch screen to control the camera is going to be one I’m definitely going to try!! I’ve flown my mini for three days now. I crashed it four times in the first two days (small tree limbs & bushes), I’m still learning my left from right & up from down. 🤔 today I have been crash free. 😃 I have a question about the propellers. They seem to be OK with only minor scuffs, no scratches and it still flys fine and sounds fine. How do you determine when to replace them?
@Dronevalley
@Dronevalley 4 жыл бұрын
I inspect the props after a day of flying and if I see a nick or deep scratch, I swap them out. Another good test is to "flex" them gently. If one of the scratches is deep, the prop will snap. I think it's better that I abuse them a little on the ground to uncover this potential issue that have the wind do it at 200' up in the air. If they pass this test, I'm cool flying with them. Thanks for the post and I hope that helps. Rick
