After 23 years with the same full time civil service department I have learned that situations change constantly. Power hungry officers retire, unpopular Chiefs retire, Mayors and other town leaders move on, retire, or change their position on things. We had a Town Manager that came from another city and we were warned by the firefighters from where he came from about him. They called him the "firefighter hater". Well he's been here 12 years now and has always had our backs, and for the most part he's been fair during contract negotiations. Just like any job there are things you will love and things you will wish were different. The main thing is be interested in the mission of the department you are joining, educate yourself on what the department does, and remember you joined them, they didn't join you. Mission first, and usually you will be happy. If not, take advantage of gaining some knowledge and experience and look to lateral. Good luck.

Thanks for the awesome video! I'm just 20 years old and just accepted a Job offer for Full-Time employment with a department I was really hoping to get on with. You're advice has been awesome and I'm really excited to get started!

Thanks for the video. I finished the fire academy in November, got my AEMT in January, and got a job offer from the first department I tested with. These are some good things to look into as I keep my eye on moving into this department.

I work for a big dept. Sure we get more Fires, but we also get even more EMS calls 😂 If you wanna be a firefighter, you’re gonna have to do EMS, it’s just the way of the world and the way it’s shifting. Might as well get use to it. Get your paramedic and you’ll have the pick of the litter

As always thank you so much for the videos I actually found my self in this situation a couple months ago haha. I wanted to ask you if you could plz make a video about scene size up not just structure fire but MVA, brush fire, vehicle fire, and maybe some medical scenes that you may find helpful. Thanks again for the videos!!

Graduated EMT school, passed the national, and have all my licenses and certifications. I’ve applied to a few AO openings at fire departments and also applied to AMR all last week. Should I continue finding places to apply or just wait? Also thank you so much for these videos 🙌

Can you make a video about fire Marshall? I really want to get in to it, but I’ve gotten mixed answers on the career path needed

This applies to almost any career that you may be considering. There would be some obvious differences, however, you should be asking and considering similar questions and answers.

(For context: I’m a sophomore in high school. Located in Ohio) I know most schools offer different programs and opportunities, but are there any regular high school classes that would help with being a firefighter? Not even just on paper, but classes that could help prepare me for firefighting in a more general aspect? For example, my school offers Forensic Science and Materials Science. I’ve heard that firefighters should have a decent understanding of engineering, chemistry and physics, all of which are included in Materials Science. And Forensics teaches crime scenes, which would be very helpful considering the merge with ems. So, would it be worth my time to take these classes? If so, are there any others that you would also recommend? Thank you so much for your help and support! I love your channel and am so thankful. It’s really helped me make my choice in firefighting more confident and solid!

When you see this, you should be in the junior year. But just a little advise from being in Ohio, a lot of schools and districts offer college credit plus. I’m sure you get on for fire science somewhere in the state.

I think it's a function of 24 on / 48 off yeah, a big part of why I'm going for this schedule with a $60-70K base salary seems it's a path to 6 figures through a side hustle in all that time off

I'm going to be signing up to go to the Fire Academy next month. I was reading something about having days off (mostly just one). Is it true? And are we allowed to leave the area to go somewhere else, or are supposed to stay in one place?
@derekmortensen16652 жыл бұрын
Depends on the academy. If you take the academy at a college, more than likely you’ll go home every night.

Are most of the firefighters in your country younger? what happens if you hit 40 or 50 yrs old and need glasses?
