One of the coolest days I had was when I was getting a new MOS training as a specialist. I was in a barracks with sergeants and other specialists so no crappy AIT experience with drill sergeants. One day the post decided to have a no training post cleanup day. We were assembled in a formation and the first sergeant said he needed volunteers for work details. About six people volunteered and he said take off, you're off for the day. Then said he needed for real some volunteers to do some hard work. I volunteered with about a dozen others and he told us to take off too, free for the day. Everyone else got to do details like cleaning and lawn mowing for the rest of the day. I changed out into civilian clothes and went to the post food court to have a burger. That burger was really great and I had one of the best days off I ever had in the Army, all because I volunteered. :-)

When I was in airborne school they asked for 6 volunteers for a detail the next day. I volunteered, along with 5 others and went to the cq desk to get the info. They told us that we were going to the infantry museum to watch a movie and take the day off while everybody else had to stay back and clean the barracks. It’s rare, but sometimes it does pay off to volunteer.

As far as vacation time, most units set 2 weeks in the summer and 2 weeks in December for leave. It's called block leave, they kinda force you into taking leave during that time. Don't try to take a week off in May for your sister's wedding and your unit is scheduled for a NTC rotation. If you don't take leave during block leave normally it's pretty chill, half day schedule, unless there's alot of taskings, if so you'll be on details.

Vacation time.. I remember actually selling time back.. Plus I was Signal and when we were not tasked with field problems, or after recovering from field problems like NTC or REFORGER, our Bd or Bn would be like, "Hey great field problem, you guys rocked, here's a 10 in-country pass, (Germany) , So Vacation, Off Time, depending on not really an MOS, but more Carrier field was actually a LOT more than 30 days, Good lord I miss those days, E-4, single, and in Europe with all kinds of ways to get, Time off, or week or two week passes..

To go along with the leadership and experience is employment preference. In a lot of more competitive career fields that do at least moderate vetting of applicants it's common for veterans to make it at least to the later stages of the application process because it tends to correlate a potential for reliability and capability in the eyes of employers.

My Dad was in Vietnam for a tour and got out a couple of months before the Tet Offensive. He was a drafted Spec4 that drove a vehicle loading & unloading agent orange from boats to bring to shore. I learned pretty early not to ask him too much about the war but he has leukemia and while some other friends of mine complaint about the VA but it’s giving my dad many years he might not have had. I wish the first thing budgeted when deciding to use the armed forces was setting aside resources for helping the long term damage to the survivors. If there was a box on my tax form that said “check to add an extra 1$ a month to the VA from my holdings” I’d check it. They took care of my grand father from WWII he retired a chief petty officer in 68. A good friend who served in Vietnam was able to work on his PTSD that had been torturing him since the war in the last 10 years. Another that’s closer to my age that was a marine in Afghanistan he has back issues from injury overseas. The VA is helping him. The VA is the reason I’m able to call my dad and talk to him today.

My favorite is..and always will be...ribeye steak...at least 1-inch thick..well-marbled ...well done! The food was always top-notch Stateside...even in the field! In 1969 my MOS was 11 Delta..Armor Recon Specialist ( Scout ). No civilian counterpart. I'm still hoping though for a job where I get to call in artillery or best of all...an airstrike! ::grinning:: I'm also looking for a Uber job using the APC-ACAV M113A1. I'm 70 now so time is running out. Am I raising the bar too high for my expectations? ::rolling his eyes:: I gave the video a "like" and subscribed.

My second year in the Army (1995)Had one summer where all of the NCOs had to go to school for 4 weeks. I was a E4 freshly promoted. I was a acting platoon sgt for 5 platoons of E4 and under. We would show up for PT and was told by our 1Sgt to hide all day. We would play video games in the barracks or go to the mall off post. We kept our uniforms on so we got priority anywhere on post. In 96. Got a job at the ASP where I worked 48 hrs on. 2 days off. Drill sgts and Rangers would show up at odd hours to pick up ammo for the range. Had my own office as a E4 and Dod security guard with machine gun. Did that for 1 year. I rarely saw my squad leader and I had a Govt S10 truck new to use. The last cool thing I had my recruiter begged me to sign up the last day of the month. Had him put In I get vacation every Dec 21-Jan21. My unit was pretty pissed off when they had to sign my permission in the summertime when I would buy at airfare. My commander called my recruiter and yelled at him over my contract lol. I had to go to IG one year when they refused to approve it…

So if i signed a three year contract and i don't use any of my vacation time, do they give you money? Or anything to compensate? Ik some company's will pay you for that but when it comes to the military im guessing they'll give you close to nothing worth the values of those days
@christopherchaos
@christopherchaos 2 жыл бұрын
In that scenario you would only be able to save up for 2 years because the army will not let you acquire more than 60 days before you move into "use or loose". Any leave days you have left when you get out of the army will be payed out but it's base pay only and not other things like married soldiers that get BAH and BAS. Most soldiers save leave before they get out to basically get out a month or whatever early but continue getting paid during that time.

@@christopherchaos wow thanks for replying! If you dont mind i got two more questions ,so i failed the drug test at the recruitment center because idk you couldn't smoke while in the process and they gave me a week to detox, which I've been doing (30 mins HIIT everyday, drink water and always eat healthy) what would happen if i failed again? Also Im from the RGV in Texas, would they send me to Kentucky or Alabama for basic training? Thank you for your time, love your videos!

My opinion is the army for 4 years creates a working mans college full time plus overtime, I became a workaholic and an alcoholic.

For me personally, the one thing I miss about the Army was the camaraderie. Yea, it sucked sometimes, but everyone shared in the suckage. And then after that was done, we'd go and blow our money on whatever vice fancied us at the time (mine being orange Gatorade and manga) and bullshit. For favorite food, it's cheesecake. All day everyday.

What would a 5’6 ,160 pounds 23 year old that has asthma need to get it the military
@keithburnette5332
@keithburnette5332 3 жыл бұрын
The asthma is a deal breaker. If you have asthma after age 13, it disqualifies you. There was a waiver once if you passed pulmonary tests but they nixed it once trainees started dying after PT runs.

In reality, you do get more time off in the Army, compared to alot of civilian jobs. Lunch's (in garrison), are longer than some civilian jobs. Most civilian jobs have 10 or 15 minutes for breaks.
