Depends on where you go in Colorado. I grew up on the Eastern plains and the weather is much different than it would be in, say, Estes Park. For the most part though, although the winters can be very harsh at times depending on the year and where you live, the summers in Colorado (And Wyoming for that matter) are absolutely awesome. There's a lot more to do in Colorado than people realize as well. Like, for example, a lot of people don't know that there are sand dunes in Colorado.

Hey Chris! Love the videos! I am from Texas, I have been to 48 states... On road trips! I love Utah/Wyoming/Idaho/Montana/Arizona/Colorado region. Beautiful national parks and quiet scenery. I would love to go back to all of those areas. Having studied abroad I love international travel and have many places I want to see, but 🇺🇲 is beautiful. People must understand that.

I retired in 2013. I was a Sergeant First Class (E7). I was 44 years old. I had been to war. I had raised children. I was in charge of a platoon and a JAG office. Yet, I had to submit the following documents in order to go on leave: 1. Leave form checklist 2. DA Form 31 3. Leave Earnings Statement 4. Personal risk assessment 5. First line supervisor risk assessment 6. A copy of my TRiPS risk assessment 7. A DA 4586 from my first line supervisor counseling me about going on leave. 8. Itinerary 9. If I was traveling by air, rail, ship or bus, a copy of my tickets. 10. Identity of my travel buddy. (That's right, I couldn't travel alone. My kids were not allowed to be my travel buddies.) 11. A signed "Code of Conduct Agreement" which included, "I will not go to unsafe places. I will not fight. I will not abuse members of my family. I will not use illicit drugs, et cetera. 12. A copy of my ERB that showed that I was not flagged. 13. A vehicle inspection checklist. 14. A copy of my driver's license, registration and proof of insurance. 15. If I was driving more than 50 miles, a written description of my travel/rest schedule. 16. Name, address, phone number and email of my next of kin and/or ICoE person. 17. A copy of my current MEDPROS with all green lights. 18. A copy of my current NCOER 19. A copy of my latest APFT scorecard 20. If I am on profile, a copy of my DA 3349 If I was traveling out of the country 21. A special DA 4856 warning me about the dangers of traveling out of the country 22. A copy of my passport and visa, if necessary 23. A copy of the State Department risk assessment for the country I'm traveling to. 24. A letter from the Brigade Surgeon confirming that my vaccinations are up to date. 25. A letter from the S2 briefing me on the dangers of the country I'm traveling to and stating that my biometrics are up-to-date. I often traveled alone. When they asked who my travel buddy was, I always told them it was Sammy Lopamocen. I chose that name because one of the times they asked, a Sammy Hagar song was playing on the radio and the clocks in the S1 shop read, "Local, Pacific, Mountain, Central." Now that I'm retired, I just curl up in my DD214 blanket. It protects me from all that bullshit.

So I have a question for you that I’m sure you’ll be able to answer. I noticed that you said you were in charge of a platoon and JAG office, but JAGs are typically 0-3s and above. So what do you mean by saying you’re in charge of the office? I don’t mean any pull rank bull shit by the question, I’m legitimately curious. Thanks! Also, I appreciate your years of service.

Good information man. I was a parachute rigger stationed at Ft. Benning for 3 years at the US Army Airborne School. I was also from southern california, so I didn't take that much leave since it cost so much for a lower enlisted to travel. We normally had weekends off since airborne school only trained Monday through Friday, though there were times we were asked to work weekends even if there was no training going on. This was rare thankfully and we often got long weekends during the holidays plus we could earn extra "passes" through various things (Scoring high at the range or packing the most parachutes that month for example). However one hack I'm surprised you didn't mention was having our battle buddies often sign in and out for us on leave or pass in order for us to milk that time. For example, since we had weekends off, I had asked for leave starting on Monday and returning the following Sunday, but left town on Saturday to get an extra two days (for free). When Monday morning came about, my battle buddy went to our battalion staff desk and literally signed me out (while I was laying on the beach in California). Yes I know it was dishonest and risky but everyone I knew did it.

The best leave I took was when I was stationed at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. My parents and sister came over to meet me and we played tourist on Oahu. We stayed at the AAFES owned Hale Koa Hotel in Waikiki and we got to see all the sights of the island. It was the last time that just the four of us took a vacation together. After that there were spouses and children involved.

I spent 3 tours in Korea (from 1975 to 1983 time period). I never knew I could take leave and get a paid flight to California and back... If I knew it would be paid, I would have taken leave at the half way mark... I did what you did. I was "Extended for the Good of the Army" for 2 months, but I took 59 days of terminal leave at the end of my time. On the 59th day (we could only carry 60 days back then or "use it or lose it" came into play), I made a phone call to my unit to confirm I was still alive and that was the end term of service (ETS). I worked 6 on, 2 off rotating shifts (Korean voice intercept operator), midnight, swings, days for the years (13 month tours) I was in Korea. You are right, not everyone gets a 5 and 2 work week.

I was approved for a 4-day pass during Labor Day 1997. Some Blue Falcon thought it would be funny to sign my name as a volunteer for the division fun fair that Monday. I returned Tuesday and my first-line leader and the 1SG asked me why I didn't show up. I never found out what turd put my name on the list, but I couldn't convince them that it wasn't me.

If you ever do sign in from leave early because you would have the day off anyway (like on a holiday weekend) and you don't want to waste your leave days, it's best to sign in quietly just before midnight, and get back in your car and leave the post, and don't let anyone (except friends) see you until the next work day. Otherwise, you run the risk of being put to work on some "Hey, you" detail.

For units that set block leave, you can submit for leave outside of those dates as your life does not revolve around their training schedule. They would have to have justification to deny it (mission essential tasks, OPORDs, etc.). Leave is an entitlement, not a privilege. For ordinary leave, you don't need to give a reason. Typically all you need to give is your DA31, LES, your IMR, mandatory trainings, itenerary, or POV inspection if driving. Anything extra like your whole family tree's contact info, a 4856, financial statements to show you can finance the trip, is not required and can be challenged if they are denying your leave because you don't or can't present it to them.

Hi chris. A very important thing I think you forgot to mention is that, yes, you start accumulating time off once you start basic training but you (as far as I know) cannot actually use those days off until you’re at your unit. A recruit can’t wake up during week 6 of bct and decide he wants the day off. I think outside of emergency leave or certain AIT schools that last over a year, new soldiers actually can’t start using time off until they’re fully in the army.

Great Videos and first post here...are you allowed to "accrue" vacation time while in the Army? I believe you stated a soldier is allowed 30 days a year...do they carry over to the next year and would you get them as part of your pay while leaving the service? Thank you to all the veterans out there.
@christopherchaos
@christopherchaos 6 жыл бұрын
Yes. You can save it up and it will carry over. If a solder saves it up to take vacation when they get out that is called terminal leave. If you are supposed to get out of the army in February but have 30 days of leave saved up then you can get out In January and still get paid for February.

My first few years i took some time off but afterwards never bothered. Back in my time if you had a Combat related MOS and you weren't out in the field training or deployed you always had a BS training schedule for each day of the week but many times after PT and first formation you would get released every so often meaning your off for the day. Normally it fell on a Friday so you had 3 days to go someplace and that was enough for me. When you leave the Army and you have vacation time you have 2 options. Leave early from the Army BUT not officially. Meaning lets say you had 60 days vacation so you leave 60 days early but then you would have to go formally to the nearest Fort from your home and officially out process. What i did was stay in to the very end and cashed in my vacation days meaning i was paid the day i left the Army for 2 months pay.

You have to use it or loose it. If you go over 60 days of leave built up then you start losing it. The only way you can cash it out is if you are leaving the Army and don't have enough time to take all of your leave before your date to be out, then they will cash out the remaining balance.

If you use the space a system correctly it's never a problem on getting back. As soon as you sign out on leave. Facts your leave papers to every space a terminal that's on this planet Earth. In doing so it saves you a place for rent heading back you will be at the head of the line. I sometimes would take a space a hop from Hickam to Travis then take public transit to San Francisco then rent a car drive to Centra Illinois or to make it more interesting right Greyhound. I was stationed on an island I wanted to go one direction for a few days straight. If I did the Greyhound took Greyhound to St Louis then rent me a car went to the house visit dropped it off St Louis then took their public trans to Scott Air Force Base. Sometimes I was able to catch a Learjet in time to catch a C5 to Hickam. Another time I called a C5 they went all the way to Pope Air Force Base then was supposed to go to Travis but when they say the pain might be down to go to bed for maintenance that means it's best just get rental car. Which I did took it to the house now annoy then when I was ready for the St Louis Scott Air Force Base thing. I liked it better since I was using the privilege of being in the military to travel.

@christopherchaos
@christopherchaos 5 жыл бұрын
It can be difficult to get 30 days approved with the exception of mid tour leave when you are stationed overseas or when taking terminal leave. 60 days though is the max balance you can have before you start to fall in the Use or Lose area and start losing leave time.

I leave August 5th for Basic and AIT to FLW. I’m a 12B so I stay there for all the 14 weeks, I guess its called OSUT. I should graduate around the beginning of November from training. How does the Christmas Exodus work? Can I go home during the 2 week period? Or would you need to take leave?
@RichV20
@RichV20 2 жыл бұрын
You should be done before Exodus. My 12B OSUT at Wood started Nov 2nd to March 6th. 7 weeks in we went home for Exodus, Dec 21st and came back Jan 3rd. Then wrapped up Basic phase and started AIT phase. They deduct the leave from what youve accumulated and what you will accumulate.

Depending on the case a soldier can use what is called emergency leave to see someone that is really sick or passed away and needs to go home for the funeral. I think that still comes from the leave you have but they will let you go in the negative.

Definition of "time off" in the army means: - get drunk - get into fights (usually with other soldiers) - get drunk.. again - f**king a soldier, that was also drunk, has a boyfriend (in the army, and of a higher rank than you), regrets it after, and reports YOU, to have had sexually assaulted her. A common thing, females do, in the army now. - get arrested (for doing something stupid, while drunk) - show up drunk, for PT, on Monday - lose your military ID/dog tags/weapons card, etc (because you were drunk) - get an article 15 (because one of the things, stated above)

Most commonly you will get a little time off to see family and arrange for your personal items to be picked up by the contracted movers. The movers are payed for by the army so you can have your stuff sent to your first duty station. You can extend your time home a little if you get the option to do home town recruiting.
