I’m so happy to have had my cruise experiences in the last century and early this century. Holland America, Oceania. Highlights? Inside passage. Panama canal. Relocation Barcelona to Miami. Those times and lines pretty much covered everything, including tips (though we added tips anyway). The ships were old but beautiful. Nobody much thought about the internet - which wasn’t even a thing at the beginning. Times were slow and gracious. Books were still a thing! It was a magical time out from the ‘real world,’ though now, in my memory and looking around myself as a 71 year old widow and bereft mother, Was the real world.

Thank you for your insights, Gary. "Pay more to get less" seems to be a thread running through whether we look at a cruise or a land based holiday. Itinerary changes whatever the reasons are bound to disappoint, especially if a bucket list destination is cut. A warning with the beverage package. I was on a recent HAL cruise and had the drinks package. I drink bourbon on the rocks. The first night I asked for a drink in the bar and the bartender asked if I wanted a double? I said sure. Then I checked my bill. I was charged $9 + gratuity for the drink. I informed them that I had the drinks package and was told that my "double" exceeded the $11 per drink limit. So I could have ordered two separate drinks and had both for free on the package, but the same two drinks in one glass cost me extra.

Thank you, Gary for another fine video. As a long time cruiser, almost 4 decades, we certainly see, and understand, the thinning of cruise benefits. You have confirmed that all cruises seem to be sailing at full capacity, hence the long line complaints everywhere. Travel on all venues is going up, so there is not much to be done about it. Looking at my own budget, we may be travelling a little less in the next year. On the other hand, we're not complaining, we certainly can sympathize with the reasoning behind more cost and fewer benefits. Thanks again, Gary, great video! Regards to Mark as well, he looks like a fun sort of guy.

Well, talking about Bucket List. For us it was the Baltic Sea. We live in Europe and therefore saw very early, many years ago what was going to happen and still is happening in the big country in the North East. We always wanted to do a Baltic cruise, but for no money in the world doing a stop in St. Petersburg. No doubt, a beautiful and historic place, worth more than one visit. But - in the wrong country! We always said that we will never ever bring one single Euro/Dollar there! Even if you stayed on board you had to pay Port fees and Visa... An absolute no no for us and there was no cruise line that was NOT doing a stop in St. Petersburg. As sad as it is - it is only possible now that this city is not on the itinerary of any cruise line any more. Last year we celebrated our 40th wedding Anniversary on a cruise to the Baltic Sea, enjoying all the beautiful places! We have done a full Transit of the Panama Canal a few years ago and have booked another b2b from Florida to Seattle in the spring of 2025! I am fascinated by the technique and can't stop watching everything... While hubby is enjoying drinks and taking it easy... Another thing on our Bucket List was Australia and New Zealand. We have done "Australia over the top" from Sydney to Perth, and vice versa several times. We combined it with a visit to our son who at that time had a scholarship from the University of Melbourne while studying Space and Aeronautics. One thing we still want to do is an Asian cruise, maybe Japan. We'll see. It is not a must, but it would be nice... Life is short. Don't wait too long.

Can’t get back to your video on Silver Nova. But wanted to comment on it. You mentioned the cost to go to La Dame and Kaiseki. $80 and $40. We did the Rio to Barbados leg of the 71 day World Cruise Rio to Barbados. Prices were exactly double. For $160 La Dame wasn’t worth the price. The Japanese for lunch was included but dinner $80. Want was the difference? Portion size. Didn’t notice much change between lunch and dinner. The bath products in the cabin were inferior in our opinion from past experience. We asked if they still had the better products and they did. We forgot about the caviar service until another passenger mentioned it, so we took advantage of it a couple days. No beach bag or binoculars in the cabin anymore. We could have used the binoculars on the Amazon. Speaking with another passenger who was a travel agent and she commented we were on a small Royal Caribbean ship. We expected some cutbacks and noticed them. Many we spoke to were planning to explore the other luxury lines as they were disenchanted with the new SilverSea. RC paid a lot to jump into the luxury market. They shouldn’t try and destroy its reputation so quickly.

You’ll be in my home town during your cruise in Canada (Quebec city)! I hope you’ll enjoy your time here. 💙

No reason to stop going on a cruise through Suez - just turn the cruise around at Aquaba or Shark-Al -Sheik and go back through in the other direction like cruises do in Panama

I haven’t seen the costly internet being less, did I miss a price cut?
@TessaOswin8 ай бұрын
The internet is still costly but now the quality is high enough that most will consider’worth’ the price if needed.

I will be going on Holland America cruise autumn this year. I was kinda intrigued to find that all inclusive drinks package has a limit of 15 drinks per day. While I am pretty sure it will be enough for me, this was a new thing I've never seen before.

Thankfully we’ve already done Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam this year on the Diamond Princess. We’ve heard that’s a route that’s never going to happen again…

I wonder how long before the current pax loads might drop? Or is this the new normal?

I don't think they will as in overall scheme of things cruising is still fairly underdeveloped as a vacation. Though I do hope too it will ease off....

It will. With all deference to Gary, who's a true expert, I think that given the state of the economy and skyrocketing costs of living combined with all the games the cruise lines are playing will turn away many people from cruising. My dear old dad was a history professor and he often said that it works like a pendulum, always swinging from one extreme to the other.
@michaelc86518 ай бұрын
@@elisaastorino2881 yep ..I'm an ex-cruiser for the time being for these exact reasons. Miss it, but looking forward to my upcoming land based Thailand holiday for a small fraction of the price of a cruise at the moment.

Helpful hints Gary and we've noticed them all over the past 2 cruises this year!! So....What's the ship where you walked the promenade behind the deck chairs (at 3.29) Gary? Regarding missing out on specialty dining bookings, we've just finished Queen Elizabeth South Pacific cruise and her specialty dining restaurant, The Verandah was empty most nights, we chose to eat there on 4 occasions and only once bothered to book. On the previous cruise, Royal Princess, I notice that sauvignon blanc is now only available in the premier drinks package, in the Princess Plus one has to settle for Semillon sauv blanc, now that's a genuine price gouge. (no one with taste buds drinks the latter - it's a product in Australia where NSW grape growers can get rid of their semillon by blending with the hugely popular Sauv Blanc)

Thanks for watching. That was RC Symphony of the Seas at the rear wheel the running track goes past. I have seen too The Verandah never seems busy and I am surprised it has survived as it does not seem to attract the numbers (but assume it must or they would change it!)

Oh, yes, you CAN tell your boss you have no wi-fi - you just lie to them. Any boss who makes you answer emails on vacation deserves it. (Alas, I am my boss, so I do answer emails on vacation - but I wouldn't ask an employee to do so!)
@xr6lad8 ай бұрын
Yes thought that was a very weird point to bring up. Unless your the CEO no company I’ve worked for if your lower down the food chain gets your to answer emails. Plus why would anyone be taking a work phone and you certainly shouldn’t be taking work emails on personal phones.
@rheeeliker45138 ай бұрын
@@xr6lad Seriously, I was in the hospital once, and the managing partner of the firm I worked for brought some files by so I could explain where I was at on them. I didn't think twice about it at the time - it's incredibly common in US companies for this to happen - but now it makes me cringe.

I don't have to give excuses as to why I'm not available. I'm on vacation, so my time is my own and no one else's.

What is the point of all inclusive if its no longer all inclusive.? We wil lall just end up going back to pay as you go which will ultimately cost the lines $$$

What was the site that you recommended for tracking a cruise price? I have Cruise Critic but I'm unable to track the repositioning cruise that we are booked on in May of 2025.
