In my younger years, my much older then me hubby went out of town for a work weekend. I decided I was going to paint our living room and kitchen blue and yellow. When he arrived home, I proudly revealed my hard work to him and asked, “do you like it?” He replied, “if I don’t, do I have to repaint it?”, I said, YES! He said, I LOVE IT!

That stone on the fireplace is timeless, IMO. It might be harder to dust, but with all the different tones in it, every decorating whim will coordinate with it and look fantastic. That was a good choice!

I always suggest to people with bare stone or wood that they get an air purifier (ionic)... Especially in rooms or basement areas. Keeps all that dust away plus clean fresh air... so worth it!

@@vivian9803 well yea, but natural stone and wood have a lot of "grab"... It doesn't want to let go! So just a small purifier (nothing fancy, they have plug-on ones even for like $25) will attract the dust etc. before it can attach.

I painted the cabinets in my last home when my kid was sleeping. I worked between 10pm and 4am over 4 nights. First night was primer, second night was paint and by the third night I was so sleep deprived that I did the second coat of paint... with the primer. I didn't realize my goof up until I woke up later that morning and then had to do it all again on the 4th night. My current house is still waiting to have the kitchen painted after living here for over 11 years.

My advice? Go with the colors you love, because you have to live with it. Don't worry about what's in because that fades quickly. I cannot stand brown in any form. Reminds me of dirt. I like gray... but balance it with other colors. Don't really care if it goes out. I want to live with what I love. Not what's popular.
@ndgrandma1818

I agree with you! I love the shades of gray walls I have in my house. They are a warm gray that feel cozy and sophisticated. I have a lot of cream in my furniture and accessories, along with small touches of gold and black. Love it! Chocolate brown reminds me of 💩. I have walnut cabinets and floors and am over it. Supposedly white cabinets are going “ out” and wood ones are coming “in”. I don’t care, I’m thinking of painting mine. 🤷‍♀️ Life is too short, decorate how you want to!

100% agree. I feel like the only reason you should ever go with trendy is if you know you're selling soon. But otherwise, go with what you love because you have to live with it. Who cares whether someone else likes your home?

@@justanotherjessica I am thinking about buying a new house and all I can find is gray with the white kitchen. I don't hate gray, I have had gray with the white kitchen for nearly 20 years, BEFORE it was trendy, now I want browns and woods and stones/natural bricks and I can't find it. EVERY HOUSE LOOKS THE SAME!!! I am looking for a restored and not a remolded home, is that even a thing? Honestly, I am likely the odd one, I bet your right, plain and trendy sells.

My home has been “greyiege” for a decade. It was the new colour when I was working for a well known high end home decor store. No regrets. Every separate room has a different colour scheme with the same wall colour. It is amazing how well it works with everything. Navy. Turquiose, brick red, Bright green (my son’s room). Small house, perfect flow, lots of colour.

I love your make over! And your paint story reminds me of something that happened to a friend of mine. They had a Camaro that they loved, but the paint color had faded over time. They decided that they loved the car so much that instead of getting a new one, they would spend the $$$ to have it repainted the same color. Which is exactly what the paint shop did. Painted it the same faded color as it was when they brought it in. Guess they shoulda asked for the "original" color.

Fun story... My husband was the type that our house could not look lived in. Nothing. Literally for years we had a couch and tv cabinet that when shut just looked like nothing. Fast forward 12 years ago... He went away, aka divorce haha Since then I have decor for every season, I change out everything, I mix/match, I have STUFF... Maybe too much. But you know what? We LIVE here (my 2 kids and I) and the best thing ever was when someone came over and said "your house really is a home for you and your kids" YEP! Love hearing what you have to say and how you organize. For me in decorating I still love dark green and burgundy. Yup a product of my age. The walls are a form of beige with a gold undertone and the green and burgundy are the accent colors. Decorate with what you like. After all you are the one living there and everything comes around again some time. If it does not who cares as long as you are happy. It only matters when it comes time to sell your house and show it of to potential buyers and then it is a different thing. Enjoy hearing what you have to say. it makes me happy.

I once made the decision to paint my kitchen walls green. It was the first time I had painted that room so I miscalculated the amount of paint needed to cover the previously dark pink (now you know why I was redecorating) walls. "That''s OK," I thought. "It's a fairly commonly used colour, I'll just nip out to the local DIY store and buy another tin." I could not find the same brand but I did find the 'same' colour, and merrily slapped another coat on the walls. It looked OK for about two years. That's when I realised that I had not applied the second coat evenly, because the two paints faded differently. So, for about three years, I lived with mottled green walls in my kitchen. It's all experience, right? At least I knew how much paint was needed, when I redecorated it cream recently.

I'd put your large family photo in a dark frame and, instead of more photos on the sides, put something else, like a wreath or long up/down words on a canvas. Anyway, group together about 4-5 things. The pillows? Change the colors. They looked too light for a dark sofa. Try a brown burlap, or textured green. One thing I saw long time ago on a TV decorating show... include one floral, one geometric, one solid.within the same color scheme. It will tie everything together. Can use a large floral and a small geometric or vise versa. I'd always include a cute or interesting thing somewhere, an antique something on the wall, an antique tricycle, something fun on the desk with your regular work stuff. It's fun to play around with stuff you can pull from your childhood or inheritance from your older relatives or vacation.

Oh my goodness, your story at the end. 🤣😂🤣 Totally something I would do. Actually in our first house I had a thing for green. The nursery was green, and the kitchen was green but slightly different. I wanted to paint our entryway off the kitchen the same color. I painted the entire room, something felt off to me but I finished anyway, only to realize it was the wrong green. 🤭 I think I went back and fixed it but MAN.

I've been seeing and hearing that "the" new colors/tones for 2022 and 2023 are exactly what Abby suggested for your colors. It is relaxing and beautiful. I loved staying for the final story. Now that's probably something I might have done. You know, when you love something so much...yeah that one is going to be dangled above your head for a time no doubt. LOL Great job all around. P.S. can you tell me what you used for the flooring. I have to change mine out soon and had a marble tile look in the kitchen that had the "greyeigh" tones and I added random black tiles to it. I think I could definitely live with the floor you put down. I need to do it budget friendly. Hubby passed away last August and I'm having to do some major changes as it appears everything is falling apart at the same time. Ugh! 54+ years of marriage and now I'm stuck doing this too. Oh well, such is life. Thanks in advance if you can share the flooring product.

Grey's often have undertones. So there are warm greys , cool greys, French greys. Just check if it is a grey white & black or if yellow, blue or Brown is mixed in. Miss matching will make something look muddy or off.

I agree! I don't like grey at all! I prefer beige as a neutral paint color, and whether it's trendy, or not, that's what my home will be. I use color in other ways, and I love it. Trends come, and go so quickly, I want my home to be for me, not anyone else.

I find that the best part of moving, all the cute things and plants. Don't get it why Americans have 2 livingrooms. 😍😘

In American homes with two communal spaces, one is typically referred to as the living room and the other is the family room or, in more recent years, the loft. The living room is intended to be a more formal space to entertain guests, similar to a parlor or drawing room. Living rooms are meant to encourage conversation, whereas family rooms are informal spaces that usual contain the TV. Thinking about houses in my area, I’d venture a guess that separate living and family rooms became popular in the 70s or 80s, even in smaller homes. Great rooms, or open concept floor plans, became popular in the late 90s and have remained so for the most part, although families with kids often seem to create a separate casual hangout space in the basement, loft, etc. - probably to give themselves some peace and quiet in the main living area, corral toys, etc.

Love your basement haven! And I've gotten nearly the same color paint for a project! Another consultation to consider, is one with a Feng Shui practioner! The value is much more than the price charged - and your space will feel lighter and fresher! Several years ago, our acupuncturist and I (a Massage therapist) rented treatment rooms in a local clinic. She'd worked with tips and cures from my friend Gwynne Warner in another office, so we hired the consultant together, to address our potion of the office! While I didn't implement all Gwynne's ideas, I used many of them - including washing the walls and the exercise ball (¡used at the foot of the table for ergonimics!) with a bit of salt and orange essential oil in the water! (I'd been in the room 13 years, and the walls had been repainted, but I'd not ever thought to wash them!) I added a gold cloth (sheer curtain!) draped under my Ashiatsu bars, and echoed that with a couple of gold covered cushions. I also decluttered decorations and ornaments, and got inexpensive fabric cubes from our dollar store to tuck away my linens and lotions, for a more streamlined appearance! My coworker teamed with the doctor to choose and purchase nicer chairs for our reception area, and implemented most of the tips. Lisa and I each had doors set at an angle, and Gwynne recommended the cure of hanging a crystal above each of them. I'm moving into a Grannie flat that's being constructed behind my daughter's soon, and considering a consultation ❤ www.pinterest.com/gwynnewarner/

Yesssss, Revere Pewter all the way! Funny story. When we moved into our house 9 years ago, we had beige in the foyer, hallways and kitchen/family room areas. We hired painters to do the foyer and hallways because it is 2-storey in that space and I, in all my wisdom, thought we would save money by having ME paint the kitchen/family room areas. Fast forward 9 years and we still have one space painted a lovely Revere Pewter and the kitchen/family room has an awkward line where it is STILL beige. I never did paint it🤦‍♀️ Le sigh. I am getting very close to hiring someone this year, to finish the paint job that I never did and to touch up all of our other spaces that now have dings and scratches, because for heavens sake, it's been NINE freaking years!🤪🤣

@ClutterBug LOL, I ripped up carpeting in our family down to the concrete slab while my husband was asleep as a strong motivator to get him to purchase the materials and lay the plank flooring he promised time and time again (ivory carpet off the garage, good luck keeping it clean with large dogs and a few cats) back in 1999 or 2000. He woke up and was shocked and none too pleased to find the room emptied of all furniture and carpet, but the floor got done 🤣. This too is part of our marriage, we just celebrated 27 years of marriage this month! Lynn
