Thank you for the lesson! I played the violin in high school and finished Suzuki Book 1 but I stopped when I entered college. I'm now working and found myself wanting to learn again. Your explanations are amazing. It makes me feel so motivated to improve. Thank you. Take care! :)

Hi Do not forget a good rosin, you do not have to buy expensive ones, but normally the too cheap rosin (normally come with the outfit) will make this much harder than necessary. BTW, Joy Lee has already posted other rosin videos as well.

Dear Joy, Du sprichst Deutsch? :-) Anyway, I like your video very much, as it puts many different things together to a "checklist". I will write them down and hang it on my music stand to read it before starting practice! Completely different topic, but I have a question - if I relax my right hand to its maximum and get a very comfortable bow grip, my fingers are slightly curved. And as they should give good control, they don't touch the bow not only at the stick, but of course also at the sides of the frog. So I have 2 fingers on the frog side that want to tilt the bowhair, but none on the opposite side as a counterpart, as there is only the thumb which connects at the tip and should also being curved. So, if I play relaxed, I play always with more or less tilted hair. This becomes a problem if I need the maximum springiness of the bow, which it has with completely flat hair. I have to do some effort to keep the bow non-tilted, and then the maximum relaxation that is needed is gone. So, I struggle quite a bit with e.g. spiccato and sautillé. As I have the impression this is no big issue for other players, maybe I do something fundamental wrong - or not?

Hallo Johannes, Ja, Ich spreche Deutsch, da ich lange in Deutschld gelebt hab'. Regarding you question, it is normal the level of RH relaxation changes depending on the dynamics or bow strokes. Try to focus on easiness of the bow strokes while being able to adjust each part of RH (especially the wrist and finger joints) , instead of relying on how lightly RH is behaving. I hope you can try it. Happy playing Johannes!

@@JoyLeeViolin Liebe Joy, ich hoffe, Du hattest eine gute Zeit hier! Wo hast Du denn in Deutschland gelebt, wenn ich fragen darf? Thank you very much for the right hand advice. I will try to experiment with it. Quite a bit of a challenge to find a balance between relaxation and control :-)

Hi Joy Thank you so much as usual .. hey,, on a side note (no pun intended😆) just wondering what violin, bow, and shoulder rest you were using to make the video?, and I wanted to add that it’s important to consistently stay in the proper lanes when position playing. Sometimes reading music, I’ll look at my strings after some offensive sound and notice the rosin is on the string over the fingerboard beyond the ‘proper’ lanes and is certainly not a good look for me haha😉 😘👨🏻
@JoyLeeViolin3 жыл бұрын
Hi Gary, thank you for your kind words:) I use a French violin, a French bow made by Canadian and a Kun shoulder rest. And when it comes to bow contact point (the lanes) and playing position, it changes depending on the dynamics, musical context and personal preference. For a beginner, it is important to be able to keep the bow contact point in between the fingerboard and the bridge, however later all violinists should learn to place the bow near the fingerboard and also very close to the bridge as all these will bring different tone colour. Happy music making Gary!

@@JoyLeeViolin Yep 👍 I don’t like it when I see rosin on the strings too far over the fingerboard area .. that tells me I’m not being careful enough haha 🤣 😘👨🏻 PS > You’re the greatest !!
