Super validating that everything you suggested is everything I'm already doing (with the exception of calf raises, which I'll probably start doing now since my ankles need all the help they can get). I was watching this while switching out my wheels sooo time to go to the park.

@@Sk8Fam going on 10 months now, beginner skaters are starting to ask me for advice and copy me at the rink, I'm so happy with the progress I've made. I'm one of the ones who sings and claps and does whatever I feel, no room for shyness in my life, and it makes me happy that it's inspirational for baby deer skaters.

I fell when I first got in the rink yesterday because I was really relaxed and I clipped wheels together and fell on my left knee. It was cool though because I I never feel that relaxed, I was really comfortable with my weight and I guess that it was a sign of me being less stiff. It made me think we'll at least i know how to fall and get up comfortably. Yeah! I finally did crossover turn properly. I usually just relied on my trucks and would lean to turn but I wanted to turn quicker. Love you videos, wonderful explanations.

You think you could make some POV videos of you skating around the rink doing some of the basic JB moves? Just videos of your legs and feet at a medium or slow pace. It will make some of us feel like we are skating with you and I can learn the moves better. I am also trying to learn the edges of the skates so I can understand how the skates respond to certain moves. Thanks !

That calf raise advice is so good. When I started skating really hard I noticed I would get the worst shin splints! How am I just now finding your channel?! I wish I could make it out to Milwaukee or Chicago there are so many awesome skaters and skate venues out there. Madison is sorely lacking. I’ve been frantically looking for a local roller dance group, no go. It’s like, here, if you don’t want to do the derby thing and for the most learn how to try to hit people who are on skates while you’re on skates without falling. They have an introductory skating class but I outgrew that half way through the class. I’m not trying to shit on the league, those people taught me a SHIT TON about skating, gear, safely falling, upkeep of equipment (maybe not so much but that’s fine with me I know how to maintenance my skates for the most part). I want to feel more comfortable working with the plate itself but that’s for another day. Also, they have a bunch of talented skaters but teaching people how to skate is another ball of wax. Sorry for venting, you’re a super talented skater. I know my husbands gonna dig watching your content, he loves the footwork stuff. It would just be cool to have more of a skating community. Like I park skate but even that is heavily influenced by the derby in Madison. I’m not PC enough for them. It’s funny, too, because these women preach inclusivity but I saw very few faces like mine there or people who didn’t think like them. I’m just a sad and broke skating outcast 😢😭😤😭😭😪🤧🙄 ok I think I’m done.
@Sk8Fam5 жыл бұрын
We would love to have you here in Milwaukee lol. Welcome ya with open arms and every here is into helping others and teaching. We really have a skate scene where we want reveryone to be good, and I remember when I was little it awasnt always the case. So I am glad it has changed some. & Yea the skate scene is wayyy dif in Madison. To each is own, I like derby too. But I like soulful places better if you know what I mean lol. I appreciate the sub, and if possible you should go to independence roll in chicago next year! Its a huge 3 day event but one or two days is perfectly fine. Esp the JB night which I think is the sunday

So when I first seen this an never thought to practice without the skates but it makes sense. What I did is after my run on the treadmill I would decrease the speed to about 1.5 mph and walk backwards and spin around switching directions and slowly increase the speed. Never more than like 2.5 but man that really helped my balance and maneuvering around. Thank you for the tip I just took it in my own direction and damn it helps.

What you're talking about at 2:30 is exactly what I'm doing right now with my setup. I started on $100 skates with the stock hybrid wheels, as soon as I started skating outside I bought outdoor wheels and a set of good bearings. A few months later when I could recognize how my rink skating style was evolving I bought a set of harder wheels and better bearings for them than the shit stock bearings. Now 5 months later I'm ready to get a new plate, which I'll get used to while I save for new boots. I can't afford the $800 setup I want right now so I'm breaking it down as I go.

i would go with rollerbones, the ones that are 101a as far as hardness. they also got some that are either 95a or 97a, some sure grip ones that are 95a n 97a, and they got some varsity wheels that are pretty good, but me personally i would go with the roller bones, or 2nd choice is varsity wheels. softer wheels will grip the floor harder, so u roll slower and legs are more tired. so i would go 98a or higher. preferably 101a. radar riva wheels are super cheap but idk anyone who has them so idk if they are worth it lol.

I'd just finished watching again the video on the grapevine, and was wondering as I watched if it would help to do it without skates on, just to get the moves down. And then you mentioned it here! Yeah, that muscle memory, it would still help burn it in. And it can be done anywhere. Having these tutorial videos will really help people without access to experienced skaters. And, you mentioned different regional styles. Here's one from when I first picked up on skating again.(Other than two summers as a kid a long time ago.)New Jersey. You might know this one. All my exposure to real skating comes from videos, but I haven't seen anything else like this for a while. Great style! kzbin.info/www/bejne/iXfZiY2liciAiqM

my tip would be to pick up the front 2 wheels when doing the turn.so if you are turning left pick up the front two wheels and start the turn. once u put the front two wheels back down u pick up the front two wheels on the other foot to bring it around . its kind of hard to explain lol i may have to make a video talking about it while i demonstrate it

Good tips but are you going to break down certain moves on skates? lots of questions huh lololol
@Sk8Fam6 жыл бұрын
yes tying the strings most ways is for looks. some people wrap them around the ankles for more ankle support.I like the 172 boot. I love the huge soft tongue and the control the high boot offers. my 120 boot with bones on them roll faster and are a little more versatile tho. and i want to do move breakdowns. have to find the space for it, and i want to include people who are good at certain moves so when all that aligns, the move break downs will be coming for sure! lol
