having IBS as a student is hard, for me it impacts on my social ability mostly (something had to give, and I wasn't willing to sacrifice my grades). I dedicate my energy and time into study and making lectures, timing meals etc around and away from lectures

I had to call out a lot because of my stomach issues at my last job, I made up different excuses as to why when I called in and before I left I finally told my manager why and she said that I should have told her that from the start, since they know it's a health issue. People understand, mostly

I'm in year 13 so haven't had to cope at work yet, but I wanted to say thank you for these videos. I feel so guilty because of my ibs because everyone is uncomfortable when they're around me in school (when I actually go in) and it's horrible being so lonely, but seeing these videos and all the comments of lovely people going through the same things helps with remembering that I'm not alone and I'm not a disgusting monster. Thank you! 😭

Hi, I have IBS and have for a long time, but I didn't get diagnosed until about a year ago. My tips are 1. Have a mantra that grounds you, it'll help in minor situations. 2. Pepto will ease your tummy or peppermint pills. 3. Stay hydrated. 4. Make low fodmap soup to ease a hurt belly and satisfy hunger. 5. Visit your gastroenterologist as often as you can, to monitor your IBS and make sure that it's not worsening or leading to something more serious. I know how hard this is to live with, but this channel really makes me feel less alone.

I had IBS while at school, sharing a bathroom with five other girls. My tips are 1. to find a great probiotic (Digestive advantage probiotic+enzymes saved my stomach). 2. Invest in Poo pourri if you have to share a bathroom. 3. Do not be afraid to get accommodations at your school for ibs. 4. Cook as much as you can, college food can wreak havoc on your stomach (for everyone not just ibs sufferers) 5. Be honest with your roommates if you’re having a flare and let them know ahead of time about your stomach problems 6. Plan your classes so they are not too early or too late in the day (Personally morning and evening flares were most common for me).

Wow, Amazing video @Becky Excell. I know how it feels to cope and work hard along IBS. I worked as QC officer at a Pharmaceutical company. It was good for my career, but I quit after 8 months. There were no supplies or even a common room for females, unfortunately I had a female manager who was too arrogant o talk or listen to anything especially in period days; when IBS is worse. I changed my job I started teaching and freelancing. Today its been 3 yeas, and I am satisfied as I am doing something which is not ruining my physical and mental health, also I am earning well by the grace of God. Good times come, only if we make the right choice.

Rant time: At my work, people question my food all the time. I bring in Korean sweet potato noodle stir fry called japchae and they tell me the noodles look like worms. I try to explain that I can't eat the standard American diet and must look to other countries for recipes. No one asks about my lunch in a way to understand other food. They question why I'm eating such "weird foods". No amount of fake smiles, health benefits of the meal, or info about the culture matters. The next day is likely the same. They can judge. They know I can't be brought down by their ignorance. I'm not going to show up the next day with pizza and mac n cheese for my lunch to make them feel better. /end rant

I wish I had found this years ago, it took me a lot of trial and error and I reached the same conclusions lol the smaller meals thing is a big one, I would eat a small lunch and have a meal replacement drink like Ensure or Boost later. I know that won't work for everyone but if you can tolerate a drink like that it's a great way to make up for the smaller meal when you only have one break. All of your tips are perfect, it's so important to know your triggers.

I haven't really done much research till now about IBS but I normally don't eat while at work and it sucks cause I feel like it almost messes with my mood and effects my work performance. I also have mild anxiety and it makes me more susceptible to the stress symptoms associated with IBS. I have a really hard time allowing myself to eat before during or after school/work because I am afraid of my stomachs response. Has anyone had anxiety while driving through areas that don't have a lot of restrooms? I have a really hard time with that!

Yes me...I had. There are no restrooms (directly) on my route to work. During my commute to work I had the urge to go so bad that I had to pull over and go in the woods. It was early in the morning too before the sun came up. And it's only about a 12 minute drive to work. Now I (try to) go before I leave. It was very stressing especially since I usually leave at the last minute.

hi becky! really good points all around. it is a vicious circle with stress and ibs. so it is important to find ways to cope with stress and not let it control your life. i was doing well with meditation and kind of stopped doing it, need to get back to that. i'm retired so i should have less stress, right? for some reason, something else seems to come along and increase stress. right now waiting for biopsy report on wednesday - so i'm in the bathroom a lot. nonetheless, thanks for a great video! ~k

Definitely the cycle never stops... I guess that's why we call it a circle... round and round and round! I've never tried meditation, I'd like to really I think that would help a lot with my stress. Is IBS always triggered by certain foods such as gluten, diary, vegetables etc? I've been having a lot of issues with my stomach/digestive system, but I can eat what I like without any problems. Can this still be IBS? Can anyone else relate??? My main symptoms at the moment are 1. feeling sick/nauseous, especially in the morning and when I need to eat. 2. I get indigestion or heartburn every day. My stomach generally feels upset but I feel better once I've been to toilet, although sometimes I feel like I haven't emptied myself. I also get the occasional feeling of tightness, dull cramps or spasms and feeling bloated. Also since my stomach issues began and having a few bad experiences out in public, I seem to have developed anxiety/panic attack issues. Now I dont like to travel long distances or be in public/social situations which I can't exit out of easily. Its the 'fight or flight' response kicking in. I've never had issues with anxiety before this. I took Omeprazole for a few months because I was told it was probably gastritis. Then I had a blood test and the results were fine. I'm currently having tests done to figure out what the issue is. Someone suggested it could be a bacterial infection?
@Sillylily1994
@Sillylily1994 5 жыл бұрын
The Artful Rogers id say it could be ibs caused by stress. I had a really bad childhood and my ibs was caused by that. I suffer from anxiety, ptsd, and depression. So if my anxiety starts acting up I get really sick. I also have food triggers now like spicy food and red meats. I’m sure I have more food triggers but just haven’t figured them out yet.
@theartfulrogers
@theartfulrogers 5 жыл бұрын
@@Sillylily1994 Thanks for getting back to me. I think youre right actually because it all began around a stressful time, whilst studying and working full time and not sleeping enough. Ive started to notice how stress at work brings on flare ups. I'm currently still trying to get to the bottom of it, but having trouble actually getting to the doctor because I begin to get anxious even over the thought of going. I read about the low FODMAP diet, have you looked into cutting out certain trigger foods such as gluten, dairy, sugar, onions and garlic? There are more on the list, so you'll have to seek advice or do some research. Each person is different so you wont have to cut out everything.
@Sillylily1994

The Artful Rogers no problem! I actually just found this video because I’m trying to figure out how to cope with it in the morning when it’s always worse for me because I’m tryin to switch to morning shifts at work and not evening. I’m the same way with the doctors. I absolutely hate going bc I get so anxious, but it is a good idea to see a gastroenterologist! I always make my appointments for later in the day if possible usually around 1 or 2 and it surprisingly makes it easier on me and my stomach. I haven’t tried the low fodmap diet yet but I have cut out some foods that I noticed were hurting me. I sometimes give in and eat those foods though bc I love it. Like anything spicy I love and have to have it once in a blue moon lol

I need to listen to number two, but I never do. It's a good point. I have had experience with having IBS at school and in college. I would get up 2-3 hours early. I would sit close to the door. Hi Norri, sorry to hear that it affects your studies. I'm fortunately no longer a student which I'm grateful for because it really did affect me back then. But I think it's important to give yourself time when you are feeling poorly to just relax, don't feel bad that you are not studying. & also definitely if you can, let someone know (a lecturer/teacher etc) that you trust about your problems. They might be able to put you in touch with someone who can advise if you are falling behind. Just remember there are always things that can be done, don't suffer in silence xx
