In my culture, when we're ready to introduce solids, we don't start by making Baby a plate. We sit them at the table next to us, give them slightly less milk than usual and let them become interested and eat from our plate with their hands.

Hi Emma! Thanks for your information. It's so helpful to understand my kid and help him to get independet. I've also watched your «The Top 7 Mistakes That Make Picky Eating Worse» in the past and it has helped a lot! But we're still worried about our son's eating habits. We normally eat 1-2 meals per day together with our son at the table. He's two years old and very active. He's not a picky eater at all and tries new food. But usually he finishes his meal within about 5-10 minutes after maybe 4-5 bites (he eat by himself with a fork or spoon). Then he announces that he's done and wants to get down from his highchair to go play and run around. Same with snack times. He just seems to be more interested in everything else than eating! We don't want to force feed him. What we do is to offer him food actively when he passes the table. And most of the time he will stop to eat it. But I'm stressed putting so much emphasis on him eating and actively taking part in it. And also him eating while doing something else (choking hazard). I'm wondering if what we're doing is counterproductive..? Should we also limit his meal time to the time he is at the table? And at what age are children able to understand that eating at the table is this social event they are expected to take part in? The time has come where we want to introduce a new chair where he can get up and down by himself. So we will be much more dependent on his willingness to eat at the table with us. Thanks for your help!!

Give it a break. After a short gap of a day or two, Try giving them solids again. Sometimes babies reduce the intake naturally and it will get on track on it’s own. Please don’t force feed as they have no means to express how their tummy feels except cry. As I have observed with my little one. He cuts down the food intake for 2 or 3 days in a month. He gets back to normal diet after that. So I think it should be normal and they know their bodies better.

I decided to start letting my 7 month old daughter feed herself today as an attempt to give her control over feedings due to my mistake. She actually feed herself exactly how much she needed during lunch which was barely any food. The only assistance I gave her was putting the food on the spoon for her since she couldn’t figure out how to do that. I thought I was doing the right thing force feeding her but now that I know I was in the wrong, I took a step back and started correcting myself. During dinner she stuck her tongue out at me when she self fed herself oatmeal added with cinnamon and whipped cream. She kept throwing her spoon on the floor after that. Even when I tossed out the oatmeal she was eating and gave her a different type of oatmeal with bananas added to it to eat she kept on tossing the spoon onto the floor. She was off all day today in general and hope things go better tomorrow.

Any tips for bottle fed babies? Is force feeding is just as bad? My LO is very disinterested in eating, each feeding he takes 2 oz and looses interest. He is 4 month old, happy, meeting developmental milestones, does not have any medical issues that would prevent him from taking in sufficiant amount. Very rarely he may drink 5oz in one go but super rare. Each feeding is a struggle, seems that he could just not eat all day and be just as fine. Tried all formulas, breastmilk, bottles no difference. Seems that no one else has this issue and i cannot figure out what is wrong
@EmmaHubbard Жыл бұрын
Hi! It’s great that your little on is happy and meeting his developmental milestones. Bottle feeding is a little outside of my area of expertise. A speech pathologist who specialises in feeding would be able to help. I would also talk to his doctor - if he is putting on weight and the weight curve hasn’t dipped then maybe he doesn’t need large amounts of formula or breastmilk.

Hey Emma, I'm a huge BLW fan but I got super interested when you said "the correct way to spoon feed". I constantly hear about people spoon feeding their children until 1.5-2 years of age. I remember in your video on BLW you mention this again but I have received some heavy backlash from experienced parents when I asked them don't they give finger foods in a few months as well... so I'm curious what you refer being the right way to spoon feed - is it based on some government guidelines or other source? I'm super curious to be more prepared in such conversations next time.
@EmmaHubbard Жыл бұрын
Hi! This is a great question. It is the method government services use in Australia and the one that I helped parents implement when working side by side with speech pathologists specialising in feeding. In case you are interested this is a link to a free booklet for parents on introducing solids. It is honestly fantastic and my go to resource. It was written by a dietician, speech pathologist and occupational therapist and it covers everything. Mam how can we control mouthing of everything by one year old.
@EmmaHubbard Жыл бұрын
Hi! The answer to this really depends on why your little one is mouthing. Some children mouth items because they hand skills are still developing and this is how they manipulate toys (as they don't have the ability to use intricate finger movements). Usually by 1 year of age the mouthing decreases if this is the reason, as their fine motor skills improve significantly. So if you think it is due to limited fine motor skills, the solution is improving their fine motor skills by giving them age appropriate toys. Other kids mouth because it is calming. For these kids the solution is giving them alternative options they can mouth. I hope that helps!

@EmmaHubbard Жыл бұрын
It sounds like your daughter has a few options which is great. If she won’t feed herself at all then I recommend you encourage her to develop this skill. But if she happily feeds herself and you just give her a few mouthfuls to speed up the process then that is fine too.

How do you keep a sanitary kitchen when the baby is throwing food all over constantly at every meal? I feel like a bad mom for even asking the question but I'm exhausted and don't know how to do it 😢
@juliakbrown Жыл бұрын
You’re not a bad mom for trying to meet your own needs for cleanliness!! Every family has to figure out what works for all members of the family, not just the baby! I think having a drop cloth (like an old sheet or table cloth) under the baby is the easiest way to go- just shake off the crumbs outside and then throw it in the laundry. A solid plastic or wood chair is also easier to wipe than fabric chair covers. Lastly, if your kid is really throwing the food, depending on their age, it may be a sign that they’re not hungry. It’s okay to take the food away, saying something like “you’re throwing your food. It seems like you’re done eating. I’m going to take this away and we can try it again another time.” Or even “we don’t throw food, if you don’t want to eat now I’m putting this away.” Both of these would be more for an older kid who can begin to understand this kind of consequence, I wouldn’t do this for a baby who is just starting to learn to eat.
