I eat poridge with chia seeds and banana each morning and my son (6months ) always eats a bit with me. Yesterday I made him exactly the same and he refused it. I made his some toast instead and he ate it up in minutes....i guess he wasn't in a mood..🤣 Great tips. To let your baby touch and smell the food is essential.

Thank you for sharing this video. Being in an asian family, parents usually mixed food with congee for baby. I started blw with my boy since his 4.5mo and he loves food since then. It was ashamed that most of my frds who have kids only focused on how lucky im to have a food-lover son, instead of how much effort I put on to make him love and enjoy food. As you said, no one would love something if u only spoon it to your mouth. :)

Thank God, my baby eats anything and everything we give to her, so far. 😃 I would like to know the right portions though. She’s 7 months now. I usually feed her once a day with some kind of vegetable pure (about one ounce) and once a day with cereal (one tablespoon with milk until the texture is like a pure). Is it too little? She also drinks about 7 ounces of milk, with 2 teaspoons of cereal in it, per feeding and gets 3-4 feedings per day.

Thank you for this insightful content, as you always have. I will definitely try them out. My 7 month old son eats barely a full spoon. He makes a mess on his face, on the floor and on the table. He often tends to bite the other tip of the spoon than other other end which contents food. Everyone on the table always tries to fix something on him to make him eat or clean. It stresses me out. #newmominfrustration

My cardiac tot was eating almost everything under the sun with nourishing and healthy foods up until about 18 months then he started getting picky only wanting firm, crunchy foods. He would sit and eat the grains of cinnamon! Worse yet, he doesn't want to eat his lunch in daycare even though I bring it warm and fresh but would gobble it down when he comes home. He is a very sensory eater, loves eating with his hands but for a child with high calorie needs to now start to be extremely picky where he wasn't before, it is indeed stressful having to reinvent the wheel so often as conscious as I usually am, it really gets to me sometimes. Can you share some tips on transitioning into daycare /school dealing with sleep and eating? How to preserve the food textures they love after cooking hours before. Thanks dear!

Hi Emma! I'm an early intervention specialist in California, working with kiddos at age 3. My entire population benefits from OT interventions. We see not only splinter skills, but splinter delays across the board. Your insight has been incredibly helpful to pinpoint delays and help preschoolers catch up on missed infant/toddler milestones. Thank you! Any tips on helping food aversion stemming from autism? I'm desperate to get help to my families NOW while all the little brains are plastic!

HI @ab oblack it sounds like you are doing an amazing job to help your kiddos. It is so nice to see! Food aversion/restricted diet is very common for people with autism. I find using the Sequential Oral Sensory (SOS) approach to feeding the most helpful when trying to expand a child's food preferences, particularly for children with autism. Hopefully that helps.

Hi Emma! We've been following all of your tips from toys to walking to mealtimes, and they have helped us a lot in understanding and managing a newborn growing into toddlerhood! Thank you so much!! I have a question though, how do you get a 15 months baby to drink regular milk? Baby is no longer interested in formula milk and we've not had any success with regular milk either, be it giving from cup, straw or spout cup. Baby does drink water without issues from a spout cup though. We're still training baby to take water from a cup (spills everywhere 😂). Just no luck with milk and we're worried about lack of calcium and vit d. We do give baby cheese and yogurt, but there's so much of those that we could give in a day.
@EmmaHubbard
@EmmaHubbard 2 жыл бұрын
Hi @Kimie Rei it's great your little one is getting some fluids by drinking water. If possible I would recommend you pop into a dietician to see how much dairy a toddler needs to have per day. Your little one might be getting enough of the nutrients that milk offers in other food and doesn't necessarily need to drink milk from a cup, which might alleviate some of your worries. If you do want your little one to drink milk I would continue to offer it daily to your little one and let them become familiar with it over time.

Thank you for pointing out numbers one and five. I have to restrain myself watching one particular friend who shoves food in her children’s mouths even when they turn away (sometimes because of an already full mouth). I always imagine how I would feel if I was elderly and my carer kept shoving food in my mouth especially if I was trying to indicate that I didn’t want it or still had food in my mouth. I am far past the weaning stage with 12 and 8 year olds (no idea why I watched this even lol!) but I pretty much did all that you suggest - we did baby-led weaning with both and loved it for the convenience and fact that our children are pretty adventurous with food and we never had any food battles.

Hi Emma, My 9 month old will very often stop drinking from the bottle after about 130mls of the 240ml formula bottle. The only way to to get him to eat more is to distract him with a "Hey Bear sensory video" which is, I know, a terrible habit we've created. Is this a practice we should stop immediately or is it okay? If we didn't persist he would have just approx 500 - 550mls of formula a day (4 bottle feeds). We're still doing soft mashed foods with him which is very hit or miss too and I feel we probably should move onto a more solid /table food approach

My 11mo is weird. It can be a food that he likes and has had several times, but its almost like he will forget that he likes it until I convince him to actually taste it. Then you can see the light bulb go off of "Oh, I love this stuff!". Sadly, sometimes that means I have to break the rule of not forcing them and slip a little bit in his mouth. But if he still refuses after he tastes it, I stop.

My toddler was a really good eater when he was a baby. We did baby led weaning. He used to love trying things but when he turned 2 he started getting fussy. Now mealtimes have become quite difficult because he doesn’t want to try anything new and even refuses things he used to eat. It seems like there are less and less things that he want to eat. Any tips?

Hi Katrina firstly all toddlers go through a fussy eating phases. So you are not alone. I have two videos which might help. - The first one is on the learning plate which is a great way to exposure your toddler to new food without making them stressed. Here is the link:kzbin.info/www/bejne/nZeXnH6ci5Vjj80 - The second one is on traps we often fall into with fussy eaters which can make the phase worse and what to do instead. Most nights, our 2 year old won’t eat her meal at dinner time when we’re all sitting down at 6pm but when she says she’s hungry and wants a snack later, we pull out her dinner and feed her that but it is sooo frustrating because it’s usually right before bedtime around 7:45pm. Most times she’ll eat it just fine so why won’t she eat at dinner time? We eat dinner after she wakes from her 3 hour nap so I can’t imagine she’s not hungry!

I am an Indian and my husband a white American so I literally have a wide variety of food that i cook for us and for our 10 month old daughter. Thankfully she has been really good about eating the variety food that i offer her. When she stops eating there is literally nothing that i can do to get that last spoon of food into her mouth 😂😂😂😂. She purses her lips and doesn't open it. But i am also guilty of making her smile just so that i can shove some more food into her mouth. Looking at this video i am feeling bad that i do that. She does eat properly so there is absolutely no excuse why i should do that. I need to stop it when she cues a "enough" 😘

@EmmaHubbard
@EmmaHubbard 2 жыл бұрын
Generally I would introduce purees by smearing some of the puree on the table or tray and letting your little one touch it with their fingers first. Then load it up on the spoon and say "Ahhh" while bringing the spoon towards the little ones mouth (this will get them to open their mouth) and then once the spoon is in their mouth say "Mmmm. Mmmm" while smacking your lips and this will get your little one to close their lips and when they do this remove the spoon to help them clear the food off the spoon. Hope that helps!

After watching this video, the changes to mealtime was like night and day! I couldn't believe it! Feeding our little one solids was a huge struggle, and people kept telling me, "Sometimes that's just how it is! What's important is to keep trying!" But man, it was hard to keep motivated when after a first "bite," our son would refuse to eat anymore and fight us. But after this video, I went in with a different tactic. Started slow, let him taste, feel, look, and smell. I embraced the mess and resisted the urge to wipe his face, and after two bites, he was actively trying to get MORE! He was grabbing my hand even to guide it to his mouth, suddenly opening it and searching it out instead of pulling away. I still can't believe how vastly different mealtime was. Thank you so much!

Your video is wonderful, but for babies who is just starting solid foods, how high is the risk of getting choked on your tip number 1?
@EmmaHubbard
@EmmaHubbard 2 жыл бұрын
Are you referring to letting your baby touch the food? If you present your baby with food which is prepared in a way that it is safe for them to manage then the risk of choking would be reduced significantly. So if you wanted to start with pureed food, then you would simply smear some of the pureed food on the table for your little one to see, touch and smell before you expect them to swallow a spoonful of the pureed. Does that make sense?

Hi Emma, could I ask your advice on the t.v when eating. My baby, 16 months now is actually more focus to eat. He eat at a regular pace not to slow not to quick. He does notice when the texture has changed,il I tried to feed him let's say rice and veggies, he would refuse one. Could it be an exception for my baby? We started using t.v. to get him to eat more he has been in a raw of sickness, first stomach flue, the other flue, covid and now chicken pots (2 times) . We don't get him to eat but with t.v. when he is at daycare they don't use t.v. we use it at home, dinner time. Would you recommend to continue in this way? Greetings from The Netherlands:)

Can this work for my toddler who is 17 months old and doesn't like eating? I've been using the force feeding method to get her to at least eat some food, but it's not possible anymore.

Our pediatrician had us add rice cereal this week, but what is a good way to sit her to feed it to her? I've been putting her in the bouncy seat since she is 4 months and isn't sitting yet.

Hi Jennifer I would recommend getting a high chair. I prefer the Tripp Trapp high chair but this is $$$. There are other high chair options like this chair which are also good. These wooden chairs have adjustable seat height and footrest height which is something you will need for years to come. It’s important your bub is sitting upright as possible - as a reclined position makes it challenging to swallow food. Given that she is 4 months and not yet sitting (expected for her age) you will need to need to use rolled up towels to make the highchair you buy supportive. I have a video with the thumbnail saying “High chair too big” which shows you exactly how to use the rolled up towels. Hope that helps!

So good now i realize that i can more play with textures and herbs 👍 i just need a few tricks what helps bei exploring food with their fingers because my girl always want to hold it and after 2 Minutes its everywhere on her face body hair 😅
@EmmaHubbard

Some babies just want to hold the food themselves! Cutting up the food so they are thick stick helps when they are 6 - 8 months, as they don't yet have the ability to pick up hold smaller food. As they get older their hand skills get better and they have more control and mealtimes become a little less messy!

Hello, I am from Lithuania, and it is recomended to introduce one food at a time for several days (to check for allergies). is it really that important? Is it just in the beginning or with certain foods? I feel that it would take a lot of time to actually introduce many foods in the first year of life. P.S. my baby is onli 2,5 months right now, but I am already stressing out about solids 😂

Do you think that directly introducing solids ( the BLW concept) at 6 months is ok for babies?
@EmmaHubbard
@EmmaHubbard 2 жыл бұрын
Using the BLW approach can work really well. As long as you make sure you are giving your baby foods which have been made/presented in a way which is safe for them to eat and take into account the baby's oral motor skills. For example a 6 month does not have the oral motor skills to safely eat a raw apple which has been cut into quarters. But a 6 month old should be able to manage an apple stick which has been baked or pureed apple. Hope that makes sense.

Thank you so much @Emma Hubbard once again you won my heart ❤️. I'm struggling with my baby as he reduced his appetite from 2 weeks not eating properly and some of your pin points I'll try today in his dinner time. Does baby change their taste of liking same food after some times???
@EmmaHubbard
@EmmaHubbard 2 жыл бұрын
Hi @angel Aanna it can be really stressful when your little one stops eating or has a reduced appetite. These tips should help. Also remember it is not uncommon for babies to vary how much they eat day to day. Just remember your role is to provide the food and your little ones' role is to choose how much or if they want to eat. Also babies can stop eating a food that they previously liked, especially if they are given that food every day. If it is a food they do like, try to give it every second day to avoid your baby getting over the food.

My 19 month old mostly wants to eat from / touch/ play with the food on my plate, regardless what he has. I deliberately share my food with him in front of him and tell him we have the same, that that is mommy’s plate but this does not help. He keeps on demanding to touch my plate. What can I do?

Does anyone have experience with babies who used to love a large variety of food and then started disliking certain foods fairly suddenly? like green veggies. She used to love spinach and now will painstakingly remove any speck of green from her plate.

@@EmmaHubbard Thank you so much! That calms us down a bit. Yes, she's 19 months and has been refusing many veggies for 3-4 months now. She literally went from loving spinach and carrots and all the other goodies to not liking much of it over night. But she'll eat cauliflower rice 🤷‍♀️ And she eats fruit and veggie fritters. So she's not about to be unhealthy or anything. We were just confused. We even introduced play veggies and all the names and she'll happily name all of them, even at the table but still keeps giving all of them back to one of us to eat :D Thanks!

Does this apply to babies who are still eating pureed food?
@EmmaHubbard
@EmmaHubbard 2 жыл бұрын
Yep! For example, before giving your little one pureed food on a spoon I would smear some of the puree on the table and let your little one touch the puree. This will make it more likely that your little one will accept the spoonful of food.

Hi Emma. My 6.5mo seems to only suck solids and then throw them away. I wanted to do BLW but she just wasn’t actually eating much at all and always seemed hungry so I am using yogurts and purées most of the time now, but still giving her some solids to get used to and play with and to practice her motor skills. Is this OK? I worry she is only eating much of the same texture 😖
@EmmaHubbard
@EmmaHubbard 2 жыл бұрын
It is totally fine to give your little one yoghurts and purees. As you mentioned babies at this age can eat pureed food because they have the oral motor skills needed to eat this food, but they tend to play/suck with larger BLW food. By 7 months your little one should be able to safe manage mashed food and suck on meltables like toast. Honestly they progress really quickly from pureed to mashed to lumpy textures, so I would try not to worry!
