I headed out to Virginia to film some videos with the brilliant Steve Doudaklian at ‪@BedosLeatherworksLLC‬, and before the Great Reveal of our boot resole (coming up next!) I wanted to publish an informative video on boot blisters. I hate them!

In the military as an airborne paratrooper we learned to put on women's nylons to act as a second skin, than a thin sports sock and than a heavy duty wool sock on top of all of it. Never had a blister with those new heavy duty full grain (Orc skin) leather jump boots.

Love seeing Steve with you. More Steve. A couple pairs of Ariat lacers rubbed the back of my heel terribly; I find that the really wide, waterproof bandaids keep the heel from rubbing; 2-3 days all day wear and they're broken in (maybe 4-5 days).

Your shoe man is so right. I am the guy that is anywhere from an 8 to a 9. That is because I am all of those before I figure out where the boot fits me right. Every brand varies as well. I have had Allen Edmonds vary, no shit, from 8 to 9.

A few weeks back I asked the National Bureau of Standards about non-standardized shoe sizes. Their reply stated that they do not regulate the footwear industry, so we are at the mercy of lasts available to each of the manufacturers, to say nothing of those imported versions. Good luck. Thank you for this. Before the end of 2019 I would normally just by Sketchers as they seem to fit right out of the box and I normal got size 10.5 or 11. I did try other brands before 2019 like I tried bates and I think I had to get 12 boy those were the longest lasting boots I have ever had. I think was it 5 or 6 years I think. It was the upper that was bad and not the sole so no point in getting them resoled but I didn't even know that was possible until I found Bedo's and other channels like his. That was after the end of 2019. Also before 2019 I tried Propet and had to go with size 12 but that was mainly to get them wide enough, odd thing I discovered with them even though they make a very wide shoe it is not wide in the middle only in the toe box so getting the smaller pair with the right size caused pain in the side of my foot. I remember trying Merrell as well but do not recall to much about them. Now after finding channels like Bedo's and Rose Anvil. I have been trying many other brands that I had never heard of like red wings, vans, rock rooster, converse, Thorogood, Thursday, Jim Green, whites, nicks, and so many others. I have not tried all of those brands they are mainly ones I had never heard of or at least do not recall hearing about. You also do not see many around here. Like the style converse and Vans makes which are almost alike it very rare to see around here. I did try red wings and I like them but my feet get too hot in them so I just wear them as a winter boot even though they are not insulated. They did start out with the width issue but eventually that went away. I even contacted Bedo's to see if he could widen them and he could but I changed my mind when they eventually stopped causing pain in the side of my foot. So probably should apologize to Bedo's for changing my mind. I did also try rock Rooster oh boy those were bad and blisters on my heel even after just an hour. I has not able to break them in. I eventually gave up and got rid of them. I did buy a pair of Thorogood shoes and strangest thing about those is to get the right size I had to get a size 9 which is way to small on most other brands so was a bit surprised by that. Thorogood must run big or something. I also tried Jim Green. Love my Jim Green as they have no width issue but do have some heel rub but I added a heel insert which fixed that problem. I do wonder if I just need a smaller size of Jim Green but I love them because of the width being perfect. I did also try vans and boy those are one of the most uncomfortable pair of shoes I have ever warn. People did tell me they will stretch out so give them time. Oh and I did try Birchbury which is another perfect width shoe. Getting used to no drop shoes which is what Birchbury's are is a hard thing to get used to which is why I do not wear them that often. I have tried other zero drop shoes that I saw ads for like xero shoes and they are good but still do not wear them that much. I also tried 8000 kicks oh boy those are very comfortable right out of the box. I would love to see Rose Anvil do a video about them. He could do xero shoes as well which would be awesome as he does a great job. I found your channel though his if I remember correctly. This is getting long so will mention one more I tried but found just looking around for different shoes /boot and have no seen ads for it or any videos for them. The brand is Patron and I found them on ebay for around 70, I even got one for 55. They seem to be real leather and be very good quality but do lack the width I like. Also I tried size 10 and 10.5 and 10 was too small and caused pain on my big toe.

Sizing is a trip, i try to go true to size but ill always research and ask questions to find out if they are true to size or require sizing down. Like Danner Quarrys are true to size but can get away with a half size bigger. (They didnt have 7.5. Got 8) I am currently breaking in Timberland 6" Full grain boot from their American Craft Collection. Got them in 7 but they are snug not tight.

Wear socks you expect to wear with whatever footwear you purchase. My boots are primarily for winter or cold weather use. I size for heavy wool socks, 1/2 size larger than shoes with dress socks.

I place tennis wrist bands over the ankles& forearm bands on lower calf’s to prevent rub caused blisters on a number of boots during break in. Non tie pull up Harness& Western. Also some very thick leather tie up1967 moccasins.

I've heard of professional basketball players who get a brand new pair of shoes for every game. Given the advice on this video, I always wondered if they had iron feet or how they could put up with breaking in a new shoe multiple times this often.

Are you really comparing leather boots to flimsy, synthetic basketball shoes??

@@spaceman51974 Well, in that case, it is probably pro-stock and not "flimsy synthetic basketball shoes" so my guess is the quality must be there. Having worked in the field of sporting equipment for a number of years, pro-stock is a completely different game than most stuff you'll get in retail stores, and that apply also to shirts, cleats and sticks/skates depending of the sport. Also, I highly suspect that these guys get bespoke shoes, so they won't get this kind of problem. If performance is key, you can sure that teams unlock the budget so they can get the best possible equipment for their players.

I would add, wear merino wool socks of the right thickness (as thick as possible without making the boot too tight), size the boots in the afternoon when your feet swell, and when boots are new, apply conditioner like saphir renovateur or bic4 in the areas of difficulty and work it with your fingers.

I recommend conditioning the leather, and then sleeping with your new boots on. Sounds crazy, but ti works.

@@OriginalChick Your body heat does a lot to soften up the leather, too. Your feet might be a little sore or fatigued when you wake up, but you won’t have any blisters from walking and moving around in them.

I've had a pair of Redwing chukka boots for almost two years, but one of them has an annoying bit of a heel slip - not major, but enough to rub away the skin after about 15 minutes, so it is impossible to break them in properly. This won't stop, whatever I try - I have tried all the mentioned tricks in vain, so I have consigned them to the cupboard. Next stop is the charity shop.

@nacekozo Have you tried wearing wool socks? I like Darn Tough socks. Last forever. Lifetime warranty. I've never gotten a blister wearing these socks. I have 3 pair of RW Chukkas (1 Work, 2 Foreman)

@@krazmokramer yep, tried that. I've got a cupboard full of thick socks now, and I've tried several different combinations :)

@nacekozo I actually wear the lighter weight ankle high socks with the chukkas. The lanolin in the wool is supposed to prevent the blisters. Good luck. If you have to get rid of them, RW sells pretty fast on ebay. I bought 2 pair of barely worn chukkas for cheap there.

@@krazmokramer Yeah I thought about that, but I'd prefer them to go to charity. I just got them out again and tried them with a pair of my thickest wool walking socks and soon realised why I put them in there; I just can't work it out - the left one is fine, but there is something about the build of the right one that makes it slip. The funny thing is that my right foot is slightly larger than my left foot, so I don't think it is down to sizing. I got some Loake Roehamptons instead which I am still breaking in - it hasn't been boot-wearing weather recently - but no issues there. Weird, but just one of those things, I suppose.

People say the Thorogood moc toe doesn't need breaking in. For me it is the most uncomfortable shoes I've ever worn, with particularly painful hotspot around my right foot big toe knuckle. I can't imagine what the RedWing moc toe would be like.

I got the whites moc toes and went half size down. Even with the thicker socks I like to wear they are a bit loose so I need a bit of an extra insole to take up room.

I completely agree with you. Same spot; not just uncomfortable, but pain. Worst boot for me. I tried going with a wide half a size down but there was too much slop and no insoles or whatever would make them feel right.

The best method I have ever stumbled on was to put the boots on, fill the boots with water by wading through likes of a stream, then wear the boots dry. Takes about four hours. Perfect fit at the end of this process, and no blisters. True.

Yes. In the USMC, we wore the new boots in the shower. Stomp around for 30 minutes. Let them dry over night, then do it again. Yes, we got the boots to fit. However, the boots sucked to begin with. I made it through to 28years before my body and IEDs said you are done pall. Three back surgeries, fallen arches, and other injuries to the nervous system.

I have a lot of shoes, but only recently moved beyond Cole Haan to Thursday Boots and Allen Edmonds. All of the Allen Edmonds (three pairs) boots fit well, and while they do require break-in, do not cause any issues like blistering. On the other hand, both pairs of Thursday Boots that I purchased have a lot of heel slip. To me, it feels like they fit much the same, with the exception that the Allen Edmonds boots have a significantly larger gap between the sides where they lace together. Like I said though, they feel the same to me until I take a step. Then I can feel my heels are locked in by the Allen Edmonds, and the Thursday Boots slip. None of them have been worn more than a few times. Will this issue continue with the Thursday Boots, or will they break-in and stop giving be blisters?

If you have first world tenderfoot problems, get over it by meeting your boots halfway: pull on your new boots, saddle up and ride over to the nearest water trough and jump in knee deep. Remount your steed and seize the day like you normally would with your old pair. Done. If you’re not at least a city dwelling jackpot roper, you have no business wearing boots. That’s called cultural appropriation and you’ll be the laughing stock of the county.

​@@StridewiseI wear steel toes as my daily in a big city. Honestly It has it's benefits specially safety wise. Amount of times I walked over broken glass, needles,... is kinda scary. Hell I had a friend who came back from a metal show only to find a nail lunged in the sole.
