Very, very useful tips. I've been using a flashcard app for the 3 years I've been learning Russian, but I'm going to switch over to real flashcards because I find myself collecting/hoarding words and phrases and there they stay. I need to spend the time writing things out because I know, as you said, the total physical response, has to be better than what I'm currently doing. Plus, it will help with my Russian cursive writing. Thanks for your lessons and inspiration. I appreciate you.

Wow, and you were writing in cursive! I thought I was one of the few left who bothered to learn (probably because I am using a textbook from the 1970s). Like in the US, I hear it's becoming a lost art (same with the italicized forms).

Janey, very enjoyable video as always. My Russian reading level is somewhere between B2 and C1. From a technology point of view, I follow several Russian Instagram accounts on topics that interest me: jokes, funny memes, inspirational quotes, relationships, and self-improvement. I have ZERO discipline when it comes to flash cards. But I do write by hand lots of Russian sentences into my notebooks. How do I choose which sentences to write down? Whenever I encounter a new word, I search for it in Reverso and/or Yandex for sample sentences containing the new word, which I then transcribe by hand into a notebook. Sometimes I even jot down jokes or memes in which I do know all of those words, simply because my faith in the hand/brain connection is so strong. Back in Australia in the early 1980s, my teachers would force us little kids to copy down page after page after page of English dictation. Seemed so utterly pointless at the time, but I'm convinced it helped us become good writers and good spellers, while teaching us syntax and adding to our store of vocabulary. (Such methods are dead these days, I presume.) So, yes, I'm old school like you, but have found ways of incorporating technology into learning Russian.

Great tips! I know I should've started writing things down long ago. I started learning cursive earlier this year, but stopped after writing down each letter 150-200 times. Some say, "don't waste your time learning Russian cursive, you'll never use it".

Hi Janey. I just discovered your channel and subscribed. I've been studying Russian for two years. I have enjoyed watching your videos. My first Russian teacher told me to write out the flashcards. It has helped me learn how to write in Russian. I did not know that looking at the word in English first and being able to guess the Russian word means that it is locked into my brain. Спасибо за хороший совет.

In addition to listening to Russian music, I also like to take lyrics from American music and paste them into Yandex. When I get the chance, I ask a native speaker whether the translation is any good because sometimes it's a little clumsy and he or she will tell me "well, we wouldn't really say it like that." After that, it's fun to sing the song in Russian instead of English and a challenge to take the words and keep them within the beat because the number of syllables always changes. Just do the songs you love, and you'll always remember those words! "Я действительно люблю тебя, детка Мне нравится то, что у тебя есть Давай будем вместе Нам может быть жарко Завтра больше не будет, детка Время - сегодня Девочка, я могу заставить тебя почувствовать Окей Негде спрятаться, детка Некуда бежать Ты нажимаешь на спусковой крючок моего Любовного пистолета"

1977? Really? Didn't know it was that old.

That was one of the first Russian songs I learned. I remember the phrase “за ясным солнцем вслед» was like a tongue twister that I had to drill over and over. And of course, I still know the whole song word for word 20 years later.

I'm still on the fence as to whether this woman is really good at Russian or just really bad at english. :p She also thinks Washington is southern. We'll compromise at center but the south don't get it damnit. Honest Ab would agree with me. You don't just fight a war like that and have some Russian teacher declare it southern. jeezpapacheez
