I speak Spanish well enough to express most anything I need to say. I've lived in Colombia and have spent quite a bit of time traveling in Latin America. BUT I STILL have trouble understanding people at times. I've asked people to speak more slowly... maybe about a million times... and they always apologize and start speaking slowly for about 3 seconds before taking off fast again. Force of habit. I find few people who can sustain a slower pace. Especially in places where people normally speak fast. So I'm accustomed to not understanding, especially in a roomful of people hablando rápido con bromas y dichos. Oy! I get 10%. Quizás 20% a veces :). But I really like your Tip #1. I think sometimes I'm straining to understand which gets my brain crossed up. Voy a intentar Tip #1. Gracias!

I love how you keep going regardless, David 💪 that's powerful and I promise it will pay off. Aprender un idioma es un proceso y el avance es progresivo, a veces piensas que no estás avanzando mucho pero créeme que todo lo que hagas te ayuda a mejorar poco a poco. Sigue adelante amigo!!! 👏

¡Muchas gracias! There are many factors that contribute to you being able to understand certain Spanish speakers and not others. We try to speak in clear Spanish for our beginners so you can get used to it. Don't give up, after a while you'll see that you'll start to understand and pick up more from random Spanish speakers from different countries too.

Have you ever been in a Spanish conversation and you couldn't understand a word in Spanish? As the conversation gets going you get more and more uncomfortable and nervous? Don't worry too much about it, it's very common especially if you're a beginner. Today we'd like to share 5 tips on how to handle this situation 😉

Yes. Sometimes our focus can veer our attention away from our optimal learning opportunities. Taking a step back and letting our wet brain pick out what it understands without us getting in the way can be highly illuminating. Great advice!!

I love spanglish, but my definition is alternating back and forth or using correct Spanish words especially if you can’t remember the English word. I find that sometimes there is “arm wrestling” when someone tries to speak English to me but my Spanish is stronger than their English- or sometimes- their English IS good- so we stick to English. that middle zone is fun.

5 minutes seems like a long time to just sit there with no response. I think when someone is talking to you for that amount of time they would expect a head nod, a few si's and claro's, not a blank stare. I always begin the conversation with, "lo siento mi español es débil, pero estoy tratando de mejorar." That seems to set the stage for whatever follows.

Hi, I have been learning spanish for the last 2 months, primarily just building up vocabulary. I'm from Australia and my issue is at the moment is not knowing someone here I can talk to apart from my teacher to speak and practice my spanish. It's feels very slow going. What can i do in this situation?

I enjoyed your tips, but as a 60 year old beginning learner of Spanish, I need you to leave up the Spanish words longer to be able to say them out loud and then try to remember. I can remember sentences that have 3-5 words easily, but if more words they need to stay a bit longer on the screen for me. Just a thought.:)
