I'm a beginner still but my philosophy about tones is not to worry. They are critical to know and listening to tone drills is useful but we aren't ultimately going to get it that way. The more we recognize and understand phrases we will start to get them naturally. Your brain will have to start to differentiate words by their tone. What helped me was to call the tones by number 1,2,3,4,5 rather than by rising, falling, etc. I couldn't hear them that way at first but i could tell they were different. It doesn't matter what you hear as long as you can differentiate. Once I stopped trying to hear mid, low, rising, falling, high I actually started to hear it.

That's very true. What each tone is called is not a point. The main goal would be you understand the differences and be able to pronounce the right tone in a word.

I assume they wouldn't speak so they don't need to learn tones

New - You could do dozens of lessons comparing how tone changes the meaning. For example, corner/rotate, soft/boy, empty/to put/to hope, to buy/shirt, to send/the shape, to/to give ... I love your lessons and owe you a tuition payment, but don't know how to use PayPal. I'll work on that.
