I feel so bad for Cynthia. We now know that the mind can’t handle such extreme social and cultural adaptations. She ultimately underwent an involuntary re-civilization-𝒕𝒘𝒊𝒄𝒆-her only known family being killed in the process of each catastrophic event, both of which she was present for. Finally, losing all of her children without the support of her husband, bc he was also dead, is a tragic reality that understandably became insurmountable. Sad.

So sad. In an old, old graveyard near me I was exploring ,and the graves went way back into what became a woods, with gravestones literally being swallowed up and moved by the trees. And way back in there was a gravestone, with the lady's name Here lies Prudence Smithway taken by indians in a certain year( i dont recall), rescued by her father 10 years later, and apparently went on to remarry and have children in the white community. I was just staggered when I found it. I thought it was so cool I have often wondered about her life. I live in Ohio, so I am assuming it was the Mingo, but I am not sure.

Cynthia Anne's youngest son quanah Parker was the last Comanche chief ever and was extremely famous, on of the most feared men. His original house is still a historic site that people can visit. Star house I think it's called. It was the house he moved into after surrendering his way of life.He also went on to have 27 children. Cynthias story is insane and one that is truly heart breaking.

Native here, one time my uncle flew a good number of my family to the mainland across the Shelikof strait to a lake among the mountains for a picnic. We were there for a few hours, kids running around and jumping into the lake and playing around in a river of mud while the adults were cooking. A few my cousins, my brother and I were by the Beaver by the water when we all noticed something: A large black mass was moving around in the water. It swam by the plane twice before it sank back deeper into the water, with none of us getting a clear look at what it was. Now, given that this is Alaska, you would be forgiven for thinking that what we saw was a whale. But here's the thing though: We were up hill among the mountains a few miles away from the sea, with no river being deep enough for anything to get through. Absolutely no way for a whale to be up in those mountains unless someone found a way to drag it from the ocean and plopped it all the way up there To this day, I still don't know what we saw in that lake. My guess is that it may have been an ancient pike that somehow experienced Gigantism somehow, but I don't know. I just knew I didn't want to go back into the water after seeing that huge mass in the water

Should check out blood meridian, it’s a historical fiction, and it’s a brutal depiction of what life was like back then. All sides were monsters. But definitely listen to it in narrative form, as the author wants people to be immersed, so there’s no ‘he said’ ‘they respond’ making it confusing who’s saying what. Or listen to Wendigoons break down of the book, it’s 5 hours. The books is 10.

We got Texas because Mexico wanted to stop getting raided by the Comanche, so we unwittingly became their buffer. Then they wanted it back and we said sorry bud but we like this Alamo here n don’t plan on forgetting it anytime soon. Also there’s not much written history for Comanche and where they went when, just written or oral stories of other tribes migrating out of their way. That’s how wild they were, people would just up and move when they came around.

Happy Belated birthday Joel! I hope you had a great one. I’m a June baby as well. 😊. Thank you for the interesting story about the Comanche Raid of 1840. I was raised in Victoria & only found out about the raid that went through our town a few years back. The article I read didn’t have NEARLY as much information as you though. Victoria is what I like to call a large small town. It’s population is abt 70,000, but everyone knows everyone, as well as all their business. Port Lavaca is one of the small towns surrounding Victoria, w/a population of only 11,000. It’s about 30 minutes away by car. The article I read said that Victoria would have been a much smaller town had that raid not happened, as some of the residents moved to Victoria after the raid. It also said Port Lavaca wouldn’t have ever existed, as many of the residents of Linnville founded Port Lavaca after the destruction of their town, though it never grew anywhere near the size of their former town. Had the raid not happened, Linnville would have ended up being a huge city such as Houston or Corpus. Thank you again for such an interesting story that hit so close to home for me. 🥰
