This is a Doctor TRAVELS video (is that a thing?). I'm in Rome, pretending for a five minutes that I'm in ancient Rome. I love mental health, I love medical history and I love travel and I'm combining these in one video looking at five absolutely unbelievable but real theories about what caused mental illness that were held by the Ancient Romans off of ye olden days. Let me know if and which ones stand out to you.

Hello! I'm 18 y/o Akvilė from Lithuania. Recently I got diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. It really scared me considering all of the stigma that surrounds conditions like these, especially in a post Soviet Union country. That said, your videos made me feel more at piece with myself, less scared of myself, less lonely and gave me hope that I will be able to live a "normal", full- filling life. You rock. Thank you💚

Sending you best whishes to find a good way to live with your diagnosis and the right support from health care system. Your young age/early diagnose will most definitely be beneficial to you. And don't worry about "normal" too much. It's just a label. There is no one single definition of it. I understand your worry, Society can be harsh. But YOU ARE VALID no matter what.

That means so much that you've found the vids helpful. No illness defines you!

The “moral failing” explanation of mental illness is definitely still around. My parents listen to Dr. Laura’s radio show. I once heard her tell a depressed caller that she’s never met someone with depression who wasn’t harming someone else, basically saying that depression comes from guilt over your own misdeeds. Her doctorate is in physiology, by the way.

I’ve never heard of "the atoms of Asclepiades" one, it was so interesting to learn about! That is basically prescribing (considering what was available at the time) right treatment for the wrong reasons, and it is a bit sad that later his ideas about treatment weren’t taken seriously. I have just now read that his motto was to heal people "cito tuto jucunde" meaning "quickly, safely, pleasantly" and i love this empathetic approach. Thank you once again for the video!

There's a Korean show called "Daily dose of sunshine". It's set in a psychiatric hospital and follows a nurse who just transfered to the unit, and is working as a psychiatric nurse for the first time. If you're ever looking for something new to react to I recommend checking out the show, or if you're just looking for something to watch in general

My cousin was given an exorcism for his cocaine addiction. It didn't work! I shudder to think what the ancient Romans would have thought of my autism and anxiety!

Hi, I know about the demonic possession (and trepanation) and the 4 humours theory, but most of the rest was new to me. Thank you very much for the interesting video. I'm always glad to learn new things. And have a good time in Rome. And agree on the vengeful goddesses. First time I heard it but my favourite too.

As a teenager, I had an exorcism through an NHS therapist who said I had a 'gay demon' in me. It was a different time and they were just following the science.

Honestly, numbers 1 and 2 really feel right to me. Sometimes I really feel possessed and filled with the black bile. On some level I can understand wanting to cut a hole in my skull to let the demons out 😂 🤷‍♀️

Technically trepanation is still done and it works (and worked at the time). For brain swelling lmao

Well yes but I think we're losing nuance if we're comparing a burr hole for someone with an intracranial bleed to letting evil spirits exit the brain... scary neurosurgeons will pounce and tell me off
