The cars he named are garbage, he could have expanded the list. All Mini's, VW's, Mazda's and Jeeps should be avoided. The Chevy Spark is actually a Daewoo, like the Aveo was and Daewoo's should be avoided also. He could have added all Nissan's with CVT transmissions and all Chrysler's with 2.7L engines, the 3.7L & 4.7L aren't that great either.

I have just replaced minor stuff like the radio went out so I upgraded to a Bluetooth Kenwood and the airbag light comes on from time to time and I had an engine light which just turned out to be the O2 sensor upflow and downflow and just recently the muffler end of the exhaust fell off just leaving the resonator still intact and just the usual stuff battery, tires, brakes, oil change...also had to replace one of the rear wheel bearings, so I went ahead and did both in case the other side would start groaning too.

@@jdmguy44 Mazda's best days were when they worked closely with Ford. Since the separation, they've regressed. That may be coincidence, but whatever the reason, Mazdas are not as solid as they once were. I hope Scotty can support or refute my position.
@jdmguy44
@jdmguy44 5 жыл бұрын
@@c.j.rogers2422 I am guessing your a Ford fan, but it is a fact that the best Mazda's are the ones that do not use Ford parts. The worst Mazda's are the ones that do borrow parts from Ford. A good example is the euro spec mk2 Mazda 3 1.6 diesel - well known for engine problems. This engine was even used in PSA products! The euro spec mk1 Mazda 2 was simply a rebadged Fiesta, built (badly) by Ford in Spain. It was poor, and a Mazda in name only. Mazda (rather like Volvo) are doing great without Ford round their necks.

Should have got it with the 5 speed manual. Mine does great and I have the power I need when I need since I am in control of the transmission. As for off road the compass is not designed to be an "off road" vehicle but has the ability to go there when needed. Kind of like a Subaru can go off road but isn't meant to be an off road car. The 4 wheel drive system is best for slick or dangerous road conditions. Here in Montana we get lots if snow and ice and it drives thru that crap like it's no ones business.

I don't know about off road, but Subaru Foresters are amazing in our snow belt winters when they start measuring snowfall in feet. Christmas of 2017 we had over 5 feet of snow over a period of a few days and our Forester never let me down, even when the snow emergency was declared and people were asked not to drive unless necessary, having a health care worker at home we had to go out in it and even though you could hear the snow hitting the bottom it kept going. Love our Forester.

@@lobo176 There is a reason that Harley has mandated a "if you're on a road trip and your bike breaks, you get first priority for service." None of the other manufacturers have issued that sort of edict to their franchises (that I'm aware of?). It could be that Harley is looking to be #1 on customer service. Or it could be that they break down that much more often. I hear that they've come a long way on quality in the last 10 years especially, so this is not to say that they don't accumulate high mileage...but it usually can be measured in shop time.

I can attest to the jeep compass, I bought a 2011 (new) and it has 150k miles on it. It still runs ok but there are tons of little things that have broken on the interior that shouldn't have. The biggest problem I had was some little module in the steering wheel went out that controls the headlights, blinkers, windshield wipers, horn, all the wheel buttons, etc. went out. A new module cost me over a grand and had to be "programmed" and installed by a dealer. It came as a surprise too when it failed and I cranked the car, at 5am when it was still dark out, and raining...

My sister did that "never change the oil" test on a new 1989 Ford Escort. She got 2 years and 25000 miles before the engine seized up from the sludge. The "best" part there? The dealer she brought the car to (cause it was under warranty... haha) went bankrupt while they were working on her car. So in the paperwork shuffle, they got all confused and Ford shipped all their active repairs to another local Ford dealer, who then finished the job by replacing her engine. Total cost? $50 deductible, thank you drive through please. She now changes her oil regularly and switched to a "smarter" car....meaning Toyota...got 215k mi out of her 1998 Toyota Camry and is closing in on 100k mi on her 2011 Toyota RAV4. Ever. That wasn't her intention, however. She honestly believed German cars didn't have to have oil changes. She brought it in for a new A/C compressor and to see what the MIL was on for. (Overheating, unsurprisingly.) It took us several hours to flush the system under pressure several times before it could be refilled and actually de-gunk the entire system. The oil coming out when we removed the plug from the pan was become a thick, tar-like sludge with about the same consistency as a bucket of roofing tar BEFORE you heat it up. It piled up in the drain pan looking much more like something left by a dog than a car. I still to this day can hardly believe that 1: she had owned a single car and driven it for almost half a million miles and 2: more importantly, that it had NEVER had an oil change and was still somehow running. Granted, it was diesel, but STILL.

My grandpa was a ASE master mechanic. He owned his own shop and he told everyone he has had and heard of a crazy amount of people who buy new or used cars and when the engine light comes on or it stop running the garage finds out people are under the belief that synthetic oil NEVER needs changed. It will blow your mind how often it happens. They argue with him saying bad things, I seen it. Because they insist synthetic oil is permanent. He only was a mechanic about 60 years so its crazy.

@@Michaelthearcheangel Ah, yeah, thank you. I forgot to point out the fact that the REASON she thought it never needed an oil change was due to it being synthetic. I AM sort of surprised, however, after seeing this and now adding your story to my own experiences... This is a LOT more common than I thought. Thanks!

I had a 2005 Dodge Magnum for 13 years. I’m convinced it only lasted that long because I had the engine replaced with a rebuilt on after the dealership refused to honor their warranty for the well known 2.7L engine sludge problem. In the end it was getting too expensive to keep replacing parts for the menagerie of front end suspension issues.

Almost certain that Mazda has been ENTIRELY on their own (much less NO more ownership/part sharing from Ford) since the mid 2010's. Right when their entire lineup got AGRESSIVELY redid. Heard the 3's were the closest balance between the reliability of a Corolla & Civic with the fun to drive of something you'd expect from Germany. As for the Cx (5 & 9) lineup, again, redesigned 100% under Mazda; based on my understanding, ALL the Mazda SUVs from the 2000's well into the early 2010's were badge engineered Fords... and they were NOT one bit ashamed from hiding it for whatever reason. But on the flipside, I recall hearing a coworker having around a quarter million miles on a 10-12 y/o Cx7 (albeit BADLY burning/consuming oil at that point) until someone stole it... But hopefully the 2016 mazda 6's are built to last; since I'm giving this company a chance with this car, I steered CLEAR away from their "all new; totally redesigned" 2014/15's just to be safe.

@Alan-tr5uj

@@keenanfinucan8778 - Daimler nearly ruined the entirety of Chrysler. During that time 1998-2007 Daimler went on a speeding spree using most of Chryslers cash to buy Freightliner, Smart, etc. So- Daimler just used cheaper materials for all non-Mercedes vehicles (Chrysler and it's divisions) I would've never bought anything from Fiat Chrysler based on the reputations at play here. Anyway- a very close friend of mine lost his battle with brain cancer, and left me his 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT with the 6.4 HEMI V8. This became my daily driver, I let the wife have the 2012 Land Cruiser- since she barely drives compared to me. Needless to say, 5 years later this Jeep has proven every bit as reliable as our Toyotas- I've put nearly 230,000 miles on the Jeep traveling for my company- and it's still my daily driver. Sure the leather on the outer driver's seat cushion is a little beat up, but I've just changed the fluids per manufacturer spec, one brake job at 150,000 miles, a transmission filter at 100,000 miles, and that is all. The interior is out together well, everything is soft, covered in leather, and uconnect has to be one of the best infotainment systems out there- it's fast, responsive, never crashes. Most importantly, the HEMI is every bit as strong now even with all these miles. Trust me I do put my foot in it quite often, sounds amazing. Anyway- given my experience with this Modern Jeep, I would definitely purchase a Grand Cherokee SRT without hesitation. It's been one of the best vehicles I've ever owned. This is high praise from a Toyota owner.

I agree it’s a bad idea to get a used Mini, though mostly because the previous owner did not know the first thing about their limitations (horrible design under the hood and shoddy components all around) and the fact that many people simply don’t have the mindset of even caring for their cars (namely, how most of them can’t even change the oil on a car). That said, I bought an ‘09 base Mini (because screw the turbocharged version, seriously) and she’s hung in there for 10 years now - parts fail all the time, so I’ve stayed on top of that all this time all while learning from Scotty’s channel and others for a few years now. Minis aren’t practical cars, to be honest - they’re for those of us who somehow make bad marriages last because the wife is hot and can cook a meal or two. Edit: Also, I have a cousin who’s a BMW technician (I order the parts and pay for labor, his rates ain’t too bad).
@odallard
@odallard 5 жыл бұрын
Luke C Agreed; I got my 09 base convertible new when I was living in MA and that’s how I made friends there - a lot of people in New England own a Mini to the point where you could simply talk to anyone who drove one, it’s like a big community or a cult of sorts. It really is a matter of devotion to the brand. Speaking of used Minis, I know Scotty was very specific with the model year that wasn’t so good (2014), but I would also point out some people swear by R56s if anyone’s in the market for a used Mini.

Look Toyota and Honda make work great for you. That's fine, but they are not the world's "best car makers ever" the toyota and honda vehicle line is made to be cheap and expendable, they are not vehicles you keep for 40 years as a family heirloom, they're junk you scrap after a few years or trade in to get a new one. I'm sorry but I would much rather purchase and own a vehicle with parts made in the US, assembled in the US and from a US owned company who will return the money I pay them back to MY country and not Japan, or China or some other foreign country. I would bet you 100,000 dollars that my Chevrolet can outlast your Sienna and still never have a single part (excluding filters and pieces designed to be replaced) go bad on it even after 70 more years on the road. And I live in the northern states, with salt, and snow and moisture aplenty, where it's pretty common for vehicles to be worthless in less than 5 years.

My wife and I have a Compass. It is a 2011 with 70k on it. Not one major issue. It has drums in the rear, which we just serviced since it is time to. One of the servos was leaking fluid, but it was super cheap to replace, and common on drum brakes. Dash isnt cracked at all, and it sits in the sun all day evety day. No window tint either. My brothers Tundra Platinum blew up with 40k miles on it. Not only did the engine blow going down the freeway, but the suspension was ruined also. Shocks and struts were so worn, the fluid had drained out. They chalked it up to abuse. Didnt cover it even though the trucks only modification was Flowmaster mufflers. Everything else was stock. Look up problems with Tundra. Suspensions being ate like candy. 15k dollar repair bill. They bought a new Camry instead, eating a heavy trade in with their dealer. 20k miles later it needed a front end build and four wheel brake job. Not covered because joints/front end parts are "wearable parts." They kept it after sinking two grand on a one year old car. Guess where it is? At the shop at 36k miles. Front end and brakes. Again. Same issue. Dodge sucks for sure but Jeep got it right. The Compass we have has been through he!!. I hate that thing so much, but hard to knock it.
