I have and carry one of the folding Husky knives as my throwaway. I work at Home Depot and I can get them all day long if I needed to. My wife likes to use it for her craftworks and that's about the hardest we've put one through. It's a basic tool, nothing else. It's got a purpose though.

I love knifes and I tried carrying a knife for an EDC. Chipped the blade in 2 seconds (20CV). $5 Husky utility knife was better at every single thing I use a knife for. I honestly don't know what people use their EDC knifes for. I wish I could find more useful things to use a pocket knife for. It would help me justify buying more knives.

About 20 yrs ago, I bought one of these called "Super Knife", American made, for about 30 bucks. No quick change latch for the blade, just a tiny hex screw, liner lock. I got about 6 yrs of life out of it before the pivot gave out. Loved it, but not as much as a PM2 or something similar. We spend what we spend because it does bring us joy, not based on economic sensibilities. If I want to break down boxes with an "overpriced" knife, then I will because it pleases me to do so.

The background of the story is the country side in the north-east of the Netherlands, somewhere in the 20's or 30's, when land workers were traveling from farm to farm to find work and earn some money. Here it is (I had to translate it from a dialact which is spoken in the north-east of the Netherlands and English is not my first language, so there will probably be spelling and grammar errors): On the other side of the bridge over the ditch stood a dog, a Dobermann, snarling and barking. Through my 8 year old eyes it looked like a monster. "Come, walk on!", my father said and he stepped upon the bridge. I followed him, with my eyes closed. The dog snarled and growled even harder and slowly walked upon the bridge, towards us. He was ready to jump. I quickly closed my eyes again. Suddenly I heard a splash. I opened my eyes and was afraid that my father fell into the water. But he stood there on the bridge and I saw him closing his knife, his razor sharp Herder, and put it back into his pocket. Beneath, in the ditch I saw the dead dog drifting. The water around it got red. Then I saw and heard the farmer, he was shouting and ran towards us. When he stood in front of my father he shouted: "What did you do with my dog?!" There was a moment of silence and then my father replied: "I'm here to get my salary for the past week." My father had worked the whole week at this farm to harvest potatoes. He continued: "And who thinks I will not get my earned salary, will also disappear in the ditch." My father had his eyes fixed on the farmer and the farmer turned pale. Then he turned and walked back to his farm. We followed him and in the kitchen my father got his salary. "There will be no work for you here anymore", the farmer said. I saw on the look of my fathers face that he didn't even want to work at this farm anymore. When my father died forty years later, my brothers and sisters had to divide the things he left. I wanted only one thing: his last Friedrich Herder knife, which now lays on the bottom of a copper box

After having both a quality knife and a Milwaukee utility knife the convenience of quickly swapping a blade with a razor sharp new one lead me to never carry my old pocket knife. As far as being clunky and cheap I have a $15 Milwaukee that has lasted me 2yrs of heavy use with no signs of falling apart and is very fast to open and even faster than a folding knife to close. Now as someone who worked in a machine shop for many years, I can appreciate the craftsmanship of a well built knife however for the majority of uses at Least for myself the benefits of an always sharp utility knife and not being afraid to damage the edge cutting literally anything, far out ways the quality feeling of a nice knife.

Great video, good points, and like you said different blade shapes for different tasks. I prefer a wharncliffe as it's ideal for defense and also good for utility work, but it isn't great for everything, which is why it's good to have a drop point and/or other blade shapes. I try to always carry a folder and fixed on me when able, one is always wharncliffe and the other is always a different blade shape. Also the more we get into knives, the most we become steel snobs, I'm guilty of this haha. I know for 99.9% of what i use my knives for VG-10 or AUS8 is going to be good enough, but man do I love M390 and S35VN for my EDC knives.

Let’s be honest. You could carry a utility knife and be ok for a lot of things. The truth is, yes “actual” knives are more useful & versatile. The real reason, we just like knives. So the case of $20 every few years plus blade vs $100 once really isn’t fair. More like $50-$200 every few months because you found a new knife that you “can’t live without” or it fits some philosophy of use that your other knives don’t quite cover. Also lots of high quality knifes are made over seas. Cold Steel, plenty of Spyderco, Ontario Rat 1 & 2, Boker etc etc. Anyways, thanks for the video. Have a great day.

I keep the expensive knife in my pocket too but that one is for emergencies. The emergency knife always has a pristine blade because it never gets used. Bringing joy is an important function of a knife. My Gerber EAB sits in my jeans change/watch pocket and my emergency knife sits in my right main pocket under that. Carry both and your knife will always be pristine but you will also, always have a sharp utility knife for nearly everything.

I’ve been working for family since I was 11 in the field since 13. I’ve had many utility knives but always go back to the Irwin. I gave it a years rest in exchange for that husky you have and it rusted out. Had to wd-40 it and then banged it on the curb in the parking lot for 5 mins straight and got the blade out with some pliers. Dissembled it cleaned it out put it back together and it’s like new. This is the knife I would recommend to 90% of people. The way I see it is that utility knives are good for 99% of people’s daily cutting needs. You know actual utility. The 1% when you need a larger knife is largely composed of hobbyist activities. So people that actually need to use their knives are better off with utility but those into hobbies such as camping or hunting need a larger knife. The utility is the better EDC for most people. The knife is better for hobbyists and collectors that are suckers for the feel of a larger knife.

Same here. I always have a carry knife but at work I use the fastback as well and it’s been solid for a few years now. Rather replace a blade every other day then sharpen one of my knives. Not worth it just to open and cut down boxes.

As a long time knife enthusiast and collector and someone who uses my knives several times daily I've come to realize that a designated utility knife is the best thing for cutting up cardboard. And I cut ALOT of cardboard at a body shop. Cheap knives just lose there edge entirely to fast and more expensive knives are just too nice to ruin the blade with scratches from missed staples or repetitive cutting of thick shit. Coated blades get destroyed and is a major reason I've never been a fan. Just much simpler to toss the old dull blade and replace with new. And at $10 for my Gerber it's a no brainer imo.

Cardboard destroys edges. I like to just use a utility blade as well for cardboard. Then I use my knife for other tasks.

I tried to edc a box cutter and it lasted about 6 months until it simply got jammed and wouldn't slide out. I just literally tossed it and went back to a knife. Been happily using the yojimbo 2 for a year now. Great all around beater from utility to self defense. Also a viable wave mod is produced for them by 5x5 combat solutions I think.

My .02 guy is 100% correct on box/utility cutters I run a mid sized automotive shop and edc a Lenox folding box cutter (best one I've found wish they made a higher quality one I'd gladly pay $100 or more) with the carbide or sk2 blades opening boxes, cutting hoses & plastics It is by far my most used tools and after 6mths it's about destroyed go buy another one think they're $12. Would love to buy something that is USA made and not just slapped together.

I redid my roof during covid. I tried using various knives. I ended up using my cheap grocery store box cutter (from my college job. So an old knife) to trim shingles. I used a CRKT Razel to pry and peel paint. Sharpening my knives everyday wasn't worth it. The stones in the shingle just shredded my edges

I 100% agree with you about box cutters vs knives. I need to point out that you kind of stacked the deck in your favor picking the literal worst utility knife you could LOL. The Milwaukee fastback is SO much better. It's far better out of the box than either of the Benchmade knives I have tried that I think Benchmade has a lot of hype and about 0 QC. Again, I agree with your comments about utility vs real knives, and I carry at least one knife at all times, but that is by far the worst utility knife ever made.

knives are cooler. i hate getting the adhesive from opening packages on my knife so i just carry a utility knife since some utility knives have button locks and you can finesse flip em open. a 200usd knife for cardboard is overkill. stapler on benchmade? hell no. utilty knife? just flip em other side or throw em away. those stanley single piece utilty knives, fall from 2 stories, run em over with a car, no problem. but what about cutting food or paring an apple? after 5yrs carrying a sak never happened. the thought of cleaning then re oiling my sak takes away my appetite. the sak scissors tho, that is where its at. i have a knife just in case. but my utility knives get used and abused.

The problem is convenience for most people. Nobody wants to sharpen a knife because that's more money and takes alot more work than buying new knives entirely or razor blades. And if they do they will get a pull through sharpener and then it's all downhill after that

The first company/maker to produce the utility blade equivalent of the TI Mordax wins at utility knives. I would love a titanium flipper button lock utility knife, but it would still come second to any premium folding knife in my eyes.
