A large group of Russian soldiers in the border area in 1939 are moving down a road when they hear a voice call from behind a small hill: "One Finnish soldier is better than ten Russian!" The Russian commander quickly orders 10 of his best men over the hill, where upon a gun-battle breaks out and continues for a few minutes, then silence. The voice once again calls out: "One Finn is better than one hundred Russian." Furious, the Russian commander sends his next best 100 troops over the hill and instantly a huge gun fight commences. After 10 minutes of battle, again Silence. The calm Finnish voice calls out again: "One Finn is better than one thousand Russians!" The enraged Russian commander musters 1000 fighters and sends them to the other side of the hill. Rifle fire, machine guns, grenades, rockets and cannon fire ring out as a terrible battle is fought! Then silence. . . Eventually one badly wounded Russian fighter crawls back over the hill and with his dying words tells his commander: "Don't send any more men. . .it's a trap! There's two of them!

As a proud portuguese, I have to point out that the image used in the 31:00 minute mark is actually of the battle of Aljubarrota, where 6.000 portuguese soldiers fend off the invading Castilian force, which outnumbered them 5 to 1, resulting in a crushing portuguese victory, and a complete route of the remaining castilian force. The day after the battle, a baker-woman killed eight castillian soldiers who were hiding in her bakery, becoming a famous portuguese hero. it is one of the best battles in portuguese history. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Aljubarrota

Outlander, that's simply not true. The Japanese have plenty of experience with naval warfare - they live on an island; they have to! In terms of "floating castles" this is half-true. The most famous Japanese vessels pre-European influence were ships like the o-Atakebune. and these were indeed floating castles, but most navies that focused on coastal combat did this. Roman and Greek navies did such - look at the -reme (Bireme, Trireme, class ships. Even such later ships as the Mediterranean galeass had a "castle" - though ship design was evolving into more modern appearing vessels. In terms of how experienced they were in naval warfare, I'd say rather quite. They had to deal with Wakou piracy for many centuries leading up to (and during) the Sengoku Jidai period which meant they had steady experience simply fighting pirates, during the period they had to fight each other quite often; famously, Oda Nobunaga had built proto-ironclads to give himself an edge over rival warlords.

The Scottish victory against the English at Bannockburn was one of European wide significance and was studied during my military education. The Scots outnumbered as much as six to one with no heavy knights or massed longbow men defeated the English with a force of pikemen. Their King Robert even killed an English heavy knight before the battle while riding a light horse with small battle axe. The lesson we were told was of the use of terrain, trained troops in formation and prepared positions. Make the enemy fight your battle in a place of your choosing.
@torinjones32214 жыл бұрын
The odds were 2-1 not 6-1 and the knight was Henry de Bohun and he apparently broke Roberts favourite Axe. The most interesting thing about the battle and the saddest is that Giles d'Argentan died there. A famous crusader knight who was considered at the time to be among the top 3 knights of the period alongside Robert the Bruce (of Scotland) and Emperor Heinrich VII (of the Holy Roman Empire). He had never ran from a battle and refused to run and told king Edward as much before turning back towards the Scottish army. He was effectively the William Marshal or Zawisza Czarny of his era.

Dad was in the 82nd Airborne and took the ski training at Camp Hale in Colorado. He raised me on stories of the Finnish ski troops against the Soviets. Conventional thinking about terrain and obstacles goes right out the window in winter. Properly equipped ski troops turn rivers and difficult terrain into highways. Move people and arms across distances normally associated with cavalry and mechanized, and at the exact time that cavalry and mechanized are immobilized by the conditions. The Mongols used winter against targets that relied too much on water defenses.

Surely, though terribly mauled in terms of historical accuracy by the film, 300, the defence of the 'Hot Gates', (Thermopylae) against the same Persian army on land, with the eponymous 300 Spartans, accompanied by several thousand Greek allies, against an army reckoned to be anything from 100, 000 to over a million. The Spartan phalanx held the narrow pass against this huge force for several crucial days, and was only eventually defeated when the enemy managed to find a path through the hills around them. Even then the Spartans themselves refused to surrender, fighting to the death. Apart from being hugely inspiring to the Greeks, the time bought by this defence probably enabled the victories of Salamis and Plataea mentioned here, and ultimately won the war. By the way, I really enjoyed these concise, yet entertaining historical accounts by this youtuber.

In a greater historical context beyond blood and guts it is interesting that the great battles of Agincourt, Crecy and Poitiers actually helped the French king move the fairly nascent France from a collection of powerful feudal duchies etc into a centralized state where the king was truly king. This was the era of the growth of true nation states and wiping out big swathes of powerful nobility helped the process.

Though it has always been in the nature of war, that the highest ranked get the credits even if the turning point happened because one skilled footsoldier performed a miracle. Sweden has for a long time played the neutrality card, and it was important in both WW2 and Cold War. This is why they have been eager to forget the incident. At the same time, Soviet Union didnt want to pull Sweden into the war and avoided fighting swedish troops. In this they were unusually effective: I have no knowledge of swedish people actually dying in the war. One story is about a swedish volunteer airforce unit, which didnt see any combat because the soviets were actively avoiding fighting with them, to the point of knowing the minutiae of their operations. Soviets conducted raids only in times the interceptors were unavailable. Such strategy and use of intelligence assets is impressive to say the least. However, the swedish volunteers had a large effect on the war, even without firing a shot: Every km of border they patrolled, every man they sent meant one more finnish soldier who could be positioned where fighting was worst. It is my humble opinion that it was those volunteers that made the difference between survival and total destruction of Finland, and as such greatly affected the outcome of the whole WW2.

Admiral Yi’s victories were achieved from his invention of the first iron clad ship in history called “Turtle ship”. Cannon balls could not penetrate the armored ship as Turtle ship rammed the Japanese wooden vessels often outnumbering Yi’s ships by 4 to 1. He overcame not only the enemy but from the despicable treatments within Lee dynasty. King almost beheaded Yi from internal jealousy by other generals and ministers who lied to king that Yi’s ambition is to become king. Besides Myeonyang, Admiral Yi achieved many other well known victories against all odds. Yi should be ranked at the top as the greatest admiral and general in history. Alexander and Napoleon has great territorial ambitions but lost few battles. No one in history achieved series of convincing victories against overwhelming enemy and invention of a new weapon (turtle) as Admiral Yi.

Alexander did not lose any battles, except maybe a minor battle at the Iron Gates. It was not really a loss, he just did not fully commit himself to the battle probably because he did not really care. Thinking about it, Genghis Khan managed to create a vast empire in his own lifetime with an army of probably just a few tens of thousands.

In the battle of Agincourt had less to do with arrows and more to do with mud. While its true the archers killed the cavalry charges very effectively by targeting the horses, they didn't have many arrows left by the time the French decided to come in on foot. Also, the longbow has taken on a katana-like mythology for its ability to pierce armor. In truth, it was very unlikely that even bodkin arrows could puncture plate armor. Most bodkins were made of iron or weaker steel than even the cheapest plate harness and modern tests have shown arrows to be pretty ineffective at penetrating. However the French loved their horses and this lead to many defeats to the English archers. The victory at Agincourt came more as a result of crowd dynamics. Much like a black Friday sale at Walmart, the French ran from a wide area into a narrow area looking for their bargains, but wound up knocking over and trampling the people in the front. The odd soil composition of the mud here turned it into glue that a fallen armored knight couldn't get up from. So once they started falling, the English just had to tap-dance out and murder the Frenchmen. The English were mostly lightly armored commoners being mostly archers and men-at-arms, so they didn't have the plate armor to get suctioned by the mud.

@@frankanderson5012 It is now close to consensus among modern historians that the longbow was not responsible for many casualties at Agincourt. It was still valuable because of the way it affected French tactics in the battle, but the mud was more important.

you're right. the longbow has hit mythical levels, there are actually no accounts of a longbow ever even piercing plate armour, there are accounts of weak plate (used by common footmen) being pierced, but never of decent quality plate that would have been used by the french knights. there are texts that tell of how the knights who had dismounted were pushing forward into the british line, being killed, and then the men behind would fall over their fellows corpses, only to be killed as well. good positioning, freshly plowed muddy ground, british grit and french arrogance are what won that battle.

Great video. Only correction I see is that they have proven the French Armour was strong enough to withstand their points. They also used bodkins to knock them off their horses. And as you said they shot the horses. Great point on the strength of the archers. They have actually tested the bones of long dead English archers and they had actually strengthened their bones from years of pulling 150 pound pull bows. They were beasts in a fight. That was the thing. The longbow had been around for thousands of years. What made it such a potent weapon was the mandatory Sunday practice. You needed to train from youth to be an expert.

If some of these may not be decisive, most were extremely important. The battle the closest from agincourt regarding the setup and the outcome would definitely be Fomigny.

@@bebopong I do not mean to say that Tsun Zhu specifically mentioned Admiral Yi. Just that Admiral Yi would definitely qualify as the "Jewel of the Kingdom". Yi was a brilliant military leader. Had his government treated him like the Jewel he was they would have prospered from his competence. Tsun Zhu writes that it is in the State's best interest to not interfere with their military leaders who show great competence in battle, thus referring to them as a "Jewel of the Kingdom" that should not be tarnished. Dictators, like Hitler, failed to heed this advice and the result was his inevitable defeat, because he lost faith in his Generals and assumed direct command. In Admiral Yi's case they replaced him with an incompetent nobleman and the result was the destruction of virtually the entire Korean navy. In spite of this Yi still managed to defeat the Japanese armada with only 13 ships, brilliant planning, and peerless naval experience.

I don't doubt the number 1 that much, but some information is needed: 1. Was the armor itself really the issue that they sunk? You are very flexible and agile in a full plate, so that sounds like a bit of a myth. I do believe they were stuck or struggled, but the armor part sounds like they just wanted to banter the rich. 2. I don't know if arrows normally do penetrate armor, but if there was a type that could potentially do it, a source would be nice here as well. Good work on the video tho! I like it.
@SooSneeky7 жыл бұрын
Thick cloying mud is extremely to move around in normally, let alone when in full plate. It's more likely they were trampled into the mud during the press of the melee. I have never heard of or seen arrows penetrate full plate, although it's hard to replicate fully the technology from the time, even still I highly doubt it occurred. But there are plenty of weak spots in the armour, also the force imparted on someone from an arrow fired from a Longbow is probably easily strong enough to knock you off your feet or stagger you. It's also hard to tell as armour worn varied greatly from each individual.
@Spookulv7 жыл бұрын
I can not advocate for full plate as a whole, but as a man that has worn it, I can say that mud is probably not much more difficult, yet still difficult, to move around in. As for arrows I agree, I find it hard to see arrows, even longbows penetrating full plate, I believe such achievment would leave evidence.
