Invaluable information as usual Mark, especially highlighting the questionable marketing tactics encouraged by certain billion dollar pharmaceutical companies

I have just last week been prescribed antidepressants and definitely suffering from uncomfortable side effects. It feels to me like the norm is to treat the symptoms rather than the causes. Unfortunately the shortfall in a availability of psychotherapy seems to be a driver for GPs looking for a solution that’s available to them, which is not unreasonable. I would much rather receive therapy but it is unfortunately not available in my circumstances. Thank you for your content. I discovered it about a year ago and have found it to be very interesting and informative, providing insights into my condition that I was previously unaware of. If I wasn’t in Germany I would be reaching out to you for an appointment!

Excellent informative video much needed , I 'm a psychotherapist and the vastly increased prescribing is of general concern for everyone. I'm not blaming GP's as they are under enormous pressure and we know the resource issue . But I don't think the astonishing increase in prescription is the answer . We don't seem to be getting less depressed /anxious.

I agree with your statement pharma companies wish to make drugs people need to take regularly. They don't get funding from govt unless exceptional, so to cover the cost of trials etc look for best way to recoup money. The statement doctors are exposed to the most sophisticated marketing isn't quite accurate here in the uk. Maybe USA. I spent 10 years in the field and could tell yoy all the good and the bad , i really have no ties. But UK docs and pharma reps have such tight regulations on promotion (ABPI) it has ruled out the olden eays idea of boozy lunches and trips away. You cant even give biscuits to the receptionist. The system of what they prescribe is in treatment pathways known to be best. A doctor won't write out anything he fancies as often newer drugs are more expensive whereas highly effective ones are off patent and pennies. You get prescribed them first. USA however, yep pribab spot on

Psychological therepies have the best outcome and are essential for long term recovery. Anti depressants can help get the patient get to, and through the therapies and should not be considered the solution in themselves. Sorry Mark, respect you lots but you sound like a consiracy theroist.

Some people are helped by antidepressants, but look up psychiatrist, Joanna moncrieff's research that completely debunkes the chemical imbalance theory and that antidepressants do anything more than placebo when randomized control trials are done properly (with a placebo drug that has a side effect). Some patients are not only harmed by them but cannot engage in psychotherapy properly as antidepressants make affect completely flat. They cannot work with their feelings because their feelings are all flatlined.

Now a conspiracy theory is asking a question and speaking about possible negative effects. Everyone should be informed and make their decision accordingly. It's a fact that psychotropic drugs have negative side effects.
