😅I actually just got a Flexispot E7 desk + C7 chair too. My desk isn't the "pro" model, it's the E7 Noob, but it's still pretty legit. I've actually found myself using it at standing height a lot more than I expected to. I think everyone goes through a cheating/meta build phase. I used to dupe stuff like crazy in fallout 4 and Minecraft but eventually it loses its thrill and becomes boring. There comes a point when you realize that there is more satisfaction in the struggle for power than there is in the power by itself.

Over time i definitely seek out guides less and less, but this ain't new. Gamefaq's back in the 90's was the only reason i finally beat the water temple in Zelda Ocarina and didn't drop my 64 in my nightly bath. Far more fun and satisfying to figure it out, BUT I'm glad they exist. Cause after I've been stuck in a game for a while, these get me on track quick and keep me from quitting a game outright. Just need will power to only use em when you NEED em.

There is an indie game I was enjoying but I got stuck on one level, and it is not worth it to me to trial and error for 45 minutes to see if it gets good again in the next level. But there are no Steam Guides or KZbin Walkthroughs that far into the game and it sucks.

Even though IGN doesn't get paid for good review scores, I still feel like there is an unspoken relationship between them and publishers. If they review games too critically I could see them losing their early access to titles. Which would cause their reviews to be pushed back to after the game has already released, making them lose those precious first review clicks.

I would also note that the reviewers don't have to be directly paid off to still be manipulated to give more positive reviews. Aside from giving them review copies, game companies might send these people to their conventions to preview a big release where they are treated very nicely and are given luxuries they might not otherwise afford on the regular. They actually employ this tactic with KZbinrs quite a lot too and all it does is completely destroy any critical perspective they might have as they will be very likely convinced by all the comfort the game companies treat them with in regards to game previews and review copies. After all, would you want to soil your relations with the people who treated you so well even if their game turns out to be absolutely sub-par and clearly not worth the money it's asking for?

IGN as a company isnt getting anything for reviews no. the reviewers certainly get some kickbacks, non-monetary or otherwise. at least this was the case when I knew an IGN employee 7-8yrs ago; they didnt waste any opportunity to explain how IGN is kind of scummy from the inside.

A lot of youtubers who reviewed the game early included footage of how they were flown out to New York to drink champagne with other youtubers and do a Payday heist in real life (I think they "robbed" a jewelry store). All the videos I saw from those guys said positive things about the game. Lo and behold, the game comes out and servers are down for like a week on release. As it becomes playable, people realize they took so many steps back from Payday 2.

Play a niche game. There are thousands of games without video guides which are that specific or highly promoted by the algo. EDIT to list some examples - a response to someone else isn't going through. ---- Eight games in seven different original IP which I have all played. All of them are on modern consoles and PC with international releases and publishers including Arc System Works and Marvelous as well as titles which have been highlighted on Nintendo Directs and have demos (one of which I played at an event in London). I'd be surprised if you played any of them without feeling some of that mystery from the pre-KZbin age. (I could pick games which are only in one small region for another language, have zero reviews, have no modern release (digital and/or physical), are on niche platforms (DLSite, MangaGamer, Itch.io) primarily but ultimately some of those get English guides if people are passionate enough to make one even if they don't blow up. Someone below mentioned ROM Hacks and total conversion mods too which probably number quite high in surprises especially when considering randomisers and barely any guides) 1) Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin - Most guides seemed to be based on the farming component and it got updates which may make even that outdated. 2) Brok the InvestGator - It has an in-game hint system and clues which make it easy enough to figure out how to go your own way in the game, not many guides from what I can tell and not because it isn't popular or polished. 3) Underdungeon - No guides, though some playthroughs if you want to know how to get the true ending but nothing that makes you actually good at the game nor especially popular clickbaity content. 4) Mable and the Wood? No guides at all from what I can tell (not even for the good ending which I still haven't gotten) and it is a four year old Metroidvania with some cool potential skips and speed tech. 5) Aeternoblade 1 and 2 - Both games have no proper English guides to date despite the IP being over 10 years old at this point. 6) Scrap Riders - Some playthroughs, but no guides and barely any reviews. 7) Summer in Mara - The only decent guide is the one that I made as far as I know, but it is hardly sweeping the internet or twisting the meta. It just makes a buggy and tedious game easier to track and understand. Is it possible that there is a notable cheese for some of these games? Most likely but it isn't well documented or sweeping the internet. Even when I work on my Aeternoblade guide and if I find easy cheese to beat every boss or skip to the end, I'd probably frame it in a way for speedrunners rather than deliberately try to upset the balance of someone's first playthrough. This is actually what happens for most games though in the case of some games with strong competition, challenge run culture or speedrunning - it can get more dicey. Monster Hunter has a grind and co-op components, so some people will be tempted to look into the speedruns and shortcuts even if they aren't necessarily fun based on your weapon preference. It may be a minority, there are a lot of guides and content about Monster Hunter, so it is definitely impacting some people's growth though I think it is a sign of how limited the tools to learn in the series are - not just a culture of FOMO from watchers and content creators.

I agree and have the same mindset, especially for single player games. For a game like TOTK for example that is the fun of the whole game. getting stuck on a problem and trying solutions until you find something that works. The greatest is when you surprise yourself with what is possible. Guides kill that sense of mystery and discovery so the idea of using guides for a whole playthrough has always baffled me.

What I love is when game developers account for the internet, and try to find canonical ways to implement online information. Most notably: Dragon’s Dogma. It was a bit of a crude system, but every time you rented a pawn from another player, all their knowledge of quests, secret areas and how to beat certain enemies come with them. So even your pawn can pass on that knowledge once another player rents yours, creating a pseudo in-game internet.

@@piotr78 Well...to play at a lower competitive rank, not necessarily to style on worse players. A lot of smurfing is done with characters or strategies that are not effective at a high competitive level but the high rank player still likes and wants to do. Like smurfing in League because you had literally never played some character before and while your knowledge of the game from a competitive perspective puts you above the average player, you will lose a fair bit and have good back and forth with less skilled overall players who have thousands of hours in the character they're playing. At least until you start taking the smurf seriously then you gotta spin up a new smurf.

First playthrough is always blind on the hardest difficulty I can manage. Then I go for the guides to get all the achievements and best strats.

Pretty similar with how I go about it, except I usually go for the more “normal” difficulty first just to see the intended experience to take everything in, get used to the keybinds, combat mechanics, etc. Then, I’ll do the hardest difficulty or go for a survival mode if offered (like Fallout where there’s severe limitations) while tailoring certain things with the game if given the options (hide HUD, disable stuff, etc.). Those are usually the funnest runs I do. After that, it’s a free for all where I will mod a game to hell and back (if possible for the game) and search for Easter eggs, collectibles, check off achievements, etc. but that’s if the game piques my interest enough beyond the first play through. Been a number games I’ve played that are such a drag to get through that I don’t even bother replaying them or care whether I tick off achievements for it.

I'm a huge souls fan, but just couldn't get into it. I think it was the jarring difficult difference jumping between the linear level sections and boss fights. Traversing felt like a sneeze, and the bosses just had too many attacks with large telegraphs, but incredibly quick execution times. Just didn't gel well for me & I love souls games and soulslikes. The artstyle also just isn't me at all. I like dreary and oppressive settings

The only time I’m actually actively searching for it on KZbin, if there’s a Easter egg/ collectable that has some rewards for finding it (bec it can feels like a maze sometimes lol)

I was surprised to see this video. I've shared these kinds of opinions for a long time and thought I was the only one. I still use guides for collectibles if I'm trying to get all the achievements so I think they have a purpose however I only look up secrets/guides after I've beaten the game at least once for myself. Multiplayer games suffer the most from guides, as mentioned in the video they create a META which ruins the game and just makes it a giant sweat fest. If you're not playing a ranked game mode then there should be no skill based matchmaking.

Completely agreed. The biggest hole in SBMM is exactly what Renn pointed out, but didn't quite lay out in words. In a non SBMM system, you can get a team of sweats, casuals, or a mix. You have no control or influence over it. In SBMM, good players can purposely make new accounts, tank their rating, etc to play with people that they can stomp, while less skilled players have absolutely no alternative. This simple realization is what made me walk away from any kind of ranked matchmaking or SBMM PvP. Nowadays, all I play is Battlebit or Tarkov. Tarkov has a lot of sweaty players, but it's also easy to find people who just want to play and aren't obsessed with getting every tiny advantage they can get. Even then, the low ttk means that you can run into some dripped out enemy and still stand a good chance. While the game has its issues, I think it's found a great balance of giving incentives for good gear/using meta while simultaneously making the alternatives still viable. Games with high ttk inevitably make 1v3'ing extremely difficult if not impossible. Low ttk means you can still have a real chance if you play right, make good shots, and think before you act. I'm so glad I never got sucked into the meta, glitch, or cheating routes with any kind of game. That sense of exploration, discovery, and experimentation is what keeps games interesting for me.

It's like online multiplayer reduces gaming into a puzzle of how to optimise and cheese at every opportunity. In a singleplayer game this is robbing yourself of the experience you paid for, and I'm not saying there's never a case where that approach is useful, but mostly the people who play that way don't know how to 'play a game' any more, they only know how to exploit mechanics.

I liked the game Darksiders as a kid. I wanted to see if it still held up so I watched a speedrun instead of a guide, just to see actual high level gameplay. I figured out you could attack, then block and attack again. This makes every other combo absolutely worthless and completely ruined the game for me… lol

a perfect example of the phenomenon described here is World of Warcraft Classic. Vanilla WoW is a game built on discovery, exploration, and mystery. A game built in the early 2000's, an era before the idea of being able to use the internet whenever you wanted, for an unlimited amount of time. You spent your time exploring the world, discovering its secrets, and when you found cool items, you would then tell other people about them, and that was how information spread, that was what people remembered, and that was what people missed. When WoW Classic released in 2019, that core pillar of the game's design lasted about 2 months. By then, everything about the mystery of the game had been datamined, extracted, analyzed, and metagamed out of existence. WoW was not a game built to be exploited that completely and utterly, and the difficulty of the game was completely broken in half as a result. As much as you might think "Hey, why not just ignore that garbage and play the game how you want", two things: 1.) As Renn said, if you're the kind of person who wants to achieve everything you can, its kind of impossible to ignore with how much guides and exploits are shoved into your face everywhere in every community.... 2.) If it's a multiplayer game like WoW, where playing with people is a requirement, and everyone is already engaging in this stuff, nobody will play with you on the basis of you "wasting their time". vicious shit man.

Back in MW2 on the PS3, I didn't use the ACR because a guide told me it was the best. I used it because I tried most of the weapons myself and settled on that one being my favorite. In MW3 (2023) everyone uses the new meta gun because someone else told them to use it and if you don't use it you just lose. That's modern gaming.

I think this describes pretty well what makes No Man's Sky so special as a gaming experience of all games. It's so vast with content that there's no possible way you can spoil yourself going into it for the first time, it's truly a magical experience just going around and experiencing things you never thought were in the game. But eventually you see it all cause there's only so much content you can keep discovering. ...And then a free content update arrives that adds new enemies, new ships, new planet worlds and it's still new so the internet didn't catch up with it yet to make any guides on it and suddenly you have that magical feeling back where you get to keep rediscovering new things.

When you talked about the BXR glitch not being on youtube, i just laughed because youtube is exactly where I learned it, but in all fairness this mustive been 2004 2005, and youtube didnt have Ads and not all people that were 14-15 watched it. Now everyone does. But I used it all the time, i learned about it through the first pro gaming leagues because this was a glitch they never patched. The last multiplayer game I could really get into was Overwatch(before overwatch 2). I stopped because of this exact reason. It was be a meta slave, or be called a noob. I also felt like there was too much of desire for the spotlight on everyone. Everyone was trying to be the streamer that makes the incredible risky play instead of the safe boring play, ultimately resulted in a worse experience for me. Happened enough times where I just gave up on it. I almost exclusively play single player games now and I make an effort to go into them as blind as possible and i've really been enjoying gaming more as a whole since.

I 100% agree with this video. Having grown up when guides were relegated to monthly magazines and hoping your game was lucky enough to be featured, The sense of exploration and wonder are lost completely anymore. Worst is how quickly spoilers are thrown out, unless you avoid every single video, icon, ect. Some parts of the game are going to be spoiled.

Playing valheim completely blind was the most fun I'd had in ages. Stumbling into a black forest troll from a distance or getting chased by a sea monster. My God was that incredible. Wouldn't have worked nearly as well had I seen hours of gameplay

i went hrough that dilema whilst playing cyberpunk. i wanted to buy the big maxtac car but i was too broke for it. i searched for an easy farm/glitches on the internet, i got too lazy to do it since it needed allot of setup. i instead went to do gigs and quests and really enjoyed the experience and immersion i had wilst driving around from gig to gig, listening to the great music the game has and watching the beautifully corrupt scenery. i woulnd ever had experienced that if i went and just did a farm.anyways i wish i was able to experience purposeful combat more with the maxtac fights since its the only "infinitely repeatable hard combat encounter".

One thing you forgot is that walkthroughs and playthroughs are great for people who can't actually run or play the games themselves. As a potato PC user who can't pay 60-70 dollars for a game because of my country's currency there are several games I wouldn't have been able to play without these guys so I'm thankful, specially to the ones who upload without comment.

When I was a kid the internet wasn't quite as prominent in everyone's lives like it is now. This was the early 2000s and yeah the internet was very much still around but the only place to really look for stuff was random video sharing sites or forums. Social media barely existed. KZbin didn't. Reddit didn't. You had to dig for what you needed. Also now in 2024 there's tons of shit archived but in 2003 there was a lot less to sift through. By now almost every question you could have about an old game has been asked by someone. Back then they weren't. This helped foster communities on forums that posted interesting or helpful tips and advice for people regarding whatever game or hobby, and I miss that shit. Nowadays the internet is so common in every day life. Sometimes a game leaks information before the publisher even announces it. Sometimes there are tier lists for guns or builds or whatever in games within hours of that game getting released or updated. When a new MMO raid drops there's a guild out there that sweeps through it and has a guide out within hours sometimes. All the mystery of things is gone. In our need to document, explore and explain every single fucking thing we've lost the mystique and the experience of actually experiencing something without looking up every bit of detail beforehand. It's very sad. I also blame minmaxers and meta chasing slaves. Absolutely boring shit.

I find myself trying to just get through games as efficenctly as possible. I dont look up guides or youtube tips, but try to find it myself. I found this as one of the few reasons why i enjoy gaming still, just to see how far i can push the mechanics of a game.

I'm really glad I never fell into the trap of guides. I don't play many singleplayer games, but when I do, I always go in blind! and with MP games, I actively avoid meta knowledge (except with fighting games since I'm pretty into watching tournaments and stuff so it's hard to avoid that information anyways) so in games like CoD I just use whatever guns I like the feel of most, rather than the meta guns. I still have an idea of what the "best" and "worst" guns are, but mostly because of how i see other people using them. For example, it's not "meta" but running something like engineer vest with snapshot grenades and a gun with armor piercing rounds can turn you into a practical precog who always knows when someone's gonna push that angle. You can build a burst-fire gun to have such tight tac-stance spread that you might as well never aim down sights since the tac stance can so reliably hit shots downrange anyways. Or you can make a gun that just looks really cute so you enjoy using it.

I randomly picked up Dark Souls before its boom in 2013 (cause I played the MMO Requiem and thought it was like that) and I was so used to games holding my hand that I looked up walkthroughs until Blighttown. Then I figured I wasn't really experiencing the game... just going through things I already knew about for the sake of completion. Never again... Ever since I rather explore on my own and once I beat the game, if needed, I'll look up guides for achievements. And nothing truly beats the sense of reward from getting things done on our own. Awesome video! Before clicking, I actually expected the whole video to be about reviews, so I was surpised that was only the last segment. However, there are two points regarding reviews im surprised you didnt touch on: 1) While games journalists are almost certainly NOT being paid off to give positive reviews, the websites and individual journalists most certainly ARE influenced into giving positive reviews. If a journalist gives a game a poor review, theres a chance the game's publisher might just not give a review copy for their next game. This would put said journalist at a disadvantage for the next release, because getting reviews out ASAP is a big part of the game. Therefore, if they want to secure a review copy for the next release, its in the journalist's best interest to give a positive review, or at least be gentle with criticism. 2) Its well known that reviewers have VERY little time to play games before the review publishing deadline, which leads to many reviewers playing games at the lowest difficulty settings and rushing through the game as fast as they can. This leads to a situation where, in a certain sense, the reviewer played a different game than most players will play. Ive seen it sort of speculated that this is why cinematic, story-focused games always review so well; they are usually fairly easy, which means reviewers can breeze through them without any issue/frustration as opposed to being hindered by any actual... challenge.

On the other hand, it depends on the reviewer. IGN specifically writes reviews with their target demographic being parents and gaming casuals. Their reviews are meant for the people who buy CoD + FIFA + 1 game like Skyrim/Spiderman each year, or parents wanting to know which would be a better gift between Mario Kart and Smash bros. All of their reviews make perfect sense through that lens. And for story-focused, it could just be the case that people who love gaming enough to dedicate a job to playing + analyzing + writing about them, like it when there is thematic depth. Mario is openly stated to be designed like a children's toy. There isn't much going on with a game like Mario, but for The Last of Us there is a lot of emotional + thematic depth to think about and engage with. I barely give a f"ck about a game unless it has good writing, I assume a lot of people who write about them for a living can be the same.

The only thing remotedly close to spoiling myself of a game is one that I've had an eye out on fof it's release and watch like 5-10 minute gameplay video to see if it's worth dropping money down on it. This is usually towards $60+ games, but most indie games I buy just off the trailers and word of mouth alone would always win me a great gaming experience 🤘🎮

Please make the "multiplayer games aren't fun anymore" video. I've been feeling the same way for a long time now and it's hard to convey that msg/feeling to others. Competition should be more than JUST that. Somewhere along the way PvP games lost the "Fun" factor. It's about the "META" now, not what works for you individually as a player. And that paradigm shift brought in SO MANY more changes than simply what gear and weapons players as a whole would use, it changed their attitudes toward the game and others playing it.

despite the lackluster reviews for The Callisto Protocol, I got it during the Steam Winter Sale and am really glad I did. It's nothing game-changing but I really genuinely enjoyed my time with it and it's not like a 60 hour game or anything. The combat is super engaging and the story ain't half bad either. I defo recommend it if you can get it on sale for $40 or so.
