A little note on the early edge change: if done right, it's actually a proper carving technique, but requires a lot of speed and hella control
@dupersuper1000
@dupersuper1000 3 ай бұрын
It’s all about balancing your center of mass over the board while adjusting the center point to account for velocity. “Retraction turns” are a perfect example of this. It’s kinda like riding a bike. If you simply turn your handlebars without leaning into the turn, then you will flip over the handlebars. Instead, you only need a slight twist of the handlebars while leaning into the turn. While you lean over, the slight shift in the bike’s direction will counterbalance your weight shift and keep you from falling over. The same thing occurs with a snowboard. Snowboards have an hourglass shape that causes the board to drift in the direction of the edge you are carving on. If you shift your weight left and carve on the left edge, your board’s changing direction will counterbalance your body weight as you lean over. The fall line affects how far you need to lean, but you can lean toward the fall line as long as your board is whipping around fast enough to counterbalance your lean.

Caught an edge about 10 times yesterday practicing my switch riding. After years of riding regular it’s definitely humbling feeling like a beginner again.
@alx__1290
@alx__1290 Жыл бұрын
One tip that helped me if you still need it, I been struggling with my switch riding too until recently. One big tip is to equally press your shins and knees when toe riding switch and doing the opposite when on heel. I never caught on instantly to it because switch was new, as it'd be for everyone, so I'd always be stiff tryna link turns because I was afraid of catching an edge, which ironically made me catch allot of times. Idk if you still need the tip, but it helped me, so I'm just throwin it out there
@kevinknowlton853

Trying to learn switch and you helped me realize an issue I am having. I am an early turner. Will have to remember to ride flat in the transition between edges. Was so automatic when riding regular.
@alx__1290
@alx__1290 Жыл бұрын
Also if you need more help wit toe side switch, one thing that helped me is pressing your shins and knees equally. It's like knee steering which you may or may not have already heard about. Once you get that down, you can practice riding switch more naturally, then pretty soon you'll be switchin from regular to goofy and vice versa with ease

Ed, you’ve unlocked a mystery I’ve had for a season. Guilty of being an “early turner” especially on steeper, narrower runs, now I know I must go flat base first. Great video… also, you’ve given me a chance with the “scorpion” during my runs. Anyway, I hope I can shred much cleaner this season!

I stuck a heel edge into a bump I didn't see on Saturday. First real crash in a while. I managed to roll off my shoulder backwards rather than smashing my head but ended up in sort of a log roll until I caught my tail in the snow and loaded it up. That kicked me into the air unexpectedly and I pretty much did an ollie-to-bellyflop. Somehow got from partway-scorpioned to getting my shoulder under (steep hill helped) and landed on my heel edge. Edshreds (and a lot of neck/core work this year) probably saved me from a pretty bad injury.

Caught my heel edge last weekend, didn't give my board quite long enough to chill on flat base before turning when I was on my first blue run. Patience is a virtue LOL. Thanks for the great content, very helpful vid. :)

I would add additional type: Forgetful carver. This is when rider didnt realize his board starts to slide (due to slushy snow or wrong edging) and do early edge change. Kind of same as first type but different prerequisites and more spectacular result

ah yes, when you shift away a pile of snow in the middle of a carve and fall... use a late Eurocarve to avoid it , or at least make it look as intended😂 heelside worse than toe side 😂

Spectacular explosion. While reviewing some footage I saw I did this. It was so split second I didn’t fall or even jerk but it seem like a random volcano of snow just shot up. Was pretty cool.

Tragic story. first day opening up at loon this szn ended up being my last day this season. Caught my heel side edge on the FIRST run of the day and ended up slamming so hard I dislocated my collarbone. I wasn’t doing anything sketchy which makes the story that much more frustrating. I was transitioning from my heel to toe and unfortunately didn’t see the snowdrift that was created in the middle of the run. (flat light conditions) heel side edge digs right into the pile and I proceeded to get whipped backwards blindly and slam right onto my left shoulder. Got up and collected myself, did the check; legs good, torso, good, right arm, good, left arm…..yeah a little sore. Now I REFUSE to take the sleigh of shame so I rode down to the base. the pain just started to get worse and worse so that’s when I knew something was wrong. Walked over to the ticketing booth and was like , heyyyyyy so I need help 😂. Fast forward 2 months to now and I’ve gotten, a grade 5 AC joint dislocation surgery and have been in a sling since Nov 23rd. Like the video said, no matter the skill level, edge catching sneaks up on you when you least expect it so always be on your toes (literally applies to my situation😂) sadly I’m missing out on what seems to be a great season so far but I’ll have to wait it out this season😢. Good news is I may be coming out of my sling next week so I’m excited to finally get some freedom and mobility because shoulder injuries SUCK.

I'd like to think I'm a fairly intermediate snowboarder. I hardly ever fall, and I typically have great edge control. That being said, I got cocky a few weeks ago and did a lazy (and late) toeside turn into a slow zone and caught my heel side edge and ate shit in front of the whole lift line. Lost my shades in comical fashion.

why do early turner catch an edge, and in carving tutorials there is part that calls for an early edge change? what is the difference, why there is no edge catche in early edge change while carving? i still did not progress so far so I am just curios about the difference. Thanks

speed. like riding a bike. All you do to turn a bike is turn the handle bars and lean. What happens if you turn the handlebars and lean when going really slow? You either fall, or wobble to stay up. Same concept.

In carving you go to the side, so you don't catch an edge. With simple turns you go downside and an edge acts like a brake.
