In this video of The Forest, I show you 5 ways to fill roof gaps. Depending on the look you want for your roof and depending on how much you want to spend can matter a lot. Custom roofs don't fill the gaps at the end, unless you build more than 4 corners.

I just started playing The Forest and while it's a great game and lots of fun, the building is really frustrating. The lack of necessary features makes building a huge pain in the ass. Building a roof is a perfect example. Like, why the f**k does it leave a gap that I then have to dick around trying to line things up, only to have it look mediocre? Trying to build stairs, with no snapping but have it line up perfectly, at the desired height and angle, is also far too tedious, unless there's some trick? I've tried to build a platform out from a cliff and then stairs leading down but it's almost impossible to line it up and have it look good... I seriously hope the sequel fixes these issues and makes building not so painstakingly annoying.

well if endnight wasn't bitching that much we would have customisable custom wall hights, you could place a single log all over the roof. I gave up on filling that at this point, in v0.7something I tried it with deer skin which worked a bit, though.

just put a rock wall in the gap.. might stick out a bit but looks better than 90% of these. and it's not expensive the last one is epic tho

did that up until now, I don't really like it, rocks on top of logs kinda just isn't my look (not really realistic either)... also, there are always some sticking through and some holes still left okay the ones with all the different 2-wide-roofs look extremely wonky and just not really good; the one with just the roof looks quite good but is fucking expensive; I think I'll now switch to the last method, not expensive and looks very nice and also realistic imo.

I'm suprised you didn't do the double roof. You auto place a roof then custom place one so the logs go the other way and you just have to even up the heights. It's by far the easiest and the best looking in my opinion

You can also place 2 points on 2 corners on one side of a building and then go to the opposite side of the building and place a 3rd point right in the middle. Do this on all four sides and it makes a pretty clean roof with a cool looking design on the inside for you to see. Worth trying out farket if what I said makes any sense lol. It's super simple once you see what I mean

Well here's a crazy idea... I know it's going to be shocking, but how about the developer actually add the function to quickly fill in the gap of a roof? I know crazy talk right. I'm on PS4 and I practically lost my mind trying to fill that Gap in! its like they did it on purpose, if the cannibals don't kill you the freaking building will.............

All we do is do a roof one way, then do a custom roof the opposite way. You can get them to sit at the same height and you get a really cool lattice effect roof. Plus a small hole directly in the middle like a chimney. However depending on your house size will depend on the cost of that. It can be quite expensive. I prefer it though as it looks so much cleaner.

I do a custom roof starting on one side, i.e the shortest side if doing a rectangle shaped house, then once that is placed how I want it I then do another custom roof blueprint on the longest side of the house. Then I set that at the same height as the other one and once you have made it the logs are going opposite ways from each other so creates a cool lattice effect.

The 'btcobra' method is the cleanest looking one, however only with a few small adjustments that I made from his original method. The finished product will be a perfectly clean and natural looking gable wall without a double-thick overhang look to it, however my method is a bit more expensive in lumber. If it doesn't work for you, then you're doing something different from what I'm trying to convey here, as I can successfully do this build every time I try it. I hope I can explain my process sufficiently. If you're outside the structure facing one of the empty gable ends of the roof, *start your first snap point on the left side from that perspective*. It helps to build scaffolding of some sort along the outside of your structure's gable walls (I use cheats for scaffolding only for this specific build, because it's crazy to me that the devs were fine with giant triangular holes in buildings where a gable wall should be). After selecting custom roof and pressing C, set the first snap point only when the two little green ghost discs are both the same depth (don't have one of them be a full sized 'puck' and the other be flat). Then make the second snap on the very center of your wall. It helps if the length of your wall has a break directly in the center, if your wall has two or four segments. You can get this very precise by aligning the little white sphere directly to that segment break, don't go by the amount of blueprint discs. Then for your final snap point, take it over to the other end of the wall and you'll notice that as you move it around slightly, at one snap point there will be flat circles along the length of the 'ghost blueprint', and at some points some of those circles will disappear or flip 90 degrees. Bring this final snap point *just a hair to the left* (towards inside of building) of those 'flat circle' snap points, along the wall that is perpendicular to your gable wall. After all snap points are set, draw up the blueprint to see a flat gable wall that will be almost completely flush to the outside of the building. On the inside, you'll see the other half of the gable wall overhanging into the structure. So, on the inside of your structure, make a secondary rectangular wall under that doubled-up gable wall. And there you have it. As an additional note, if you've drawn out custom walls (press C) instead of using the auto-blueprint method, the first wall that you draw out will not be a gable wall, it'll be one of the walls that the 'rafter logs' of the roof are attached to.

Tbh I just add a custom wall going all the way around then delete the walls on the sides with roof it always fills is the holes is cheap, has no limitations. Works good for me

You forgot the most basic way, auto-build on roof, manually-build another roof in the other orientation. Looks good on houses that is symmetrical but is really expensive. I like your new way, think I will try it out sometime.

Not adding a simple way to fill in the gable ends of a roof is the worst thing the devs could have left out. It should cost no more and be no harder to build than a wall of the same size. I've built some pretty elaborate buildings and trying to fill in the ends of the roof is more frustrating than working all the way to the bottom of the sink hole for the first time to find out the weapon there is no better than the Katana which I usually get in the first 10 minutes of the game.

So I was messing around and sometimes I get automatic roof covers which are diagonal log fillers across the gap but only on one side lol. Depending on the size of my roof, I've had like only three diagonal logs which still leave gaps and I'vr had ones that completely fill the gap. But again, never on both sides.

I just built the wall, built the roof, then added a custom wall on top of the wall, automatic mode. It looks great from the inside. It pokes out of the roof on the outside a bit, but I think it looks better than other options. I know that would bother some people. (PS4)
