Love the checkbox method to force random numbers to regenerate. (1:46) Thank you Gary. I missed this info the first time i saw it!

Useful tips! thanks! Any tips and tricks for the latest Magic Mouse? i just bought it and was wondering if i could use it more efficiently with my workflow.

Just learn the gestures in System Preferences, Mouse. I'm a Trackpad user myself. One of the best things about Mac hardware is the superior Trackpad tech. More gestures with a Trackpad too.

I presume that you mean pseudo random numbers. Presumably from a uniform distribution.

Nice. I wonder what method it uses to obtain the number? I used to do contests for a popular forum, and a random number generator would decide the winner(s). There were always a few sore losers who would question whether the online source I was using to generate the number was doing so correctly, something to do with the way computers cannot "truly" generate a random number. I'm not sure if that's still a thing, as this was quite a few years ago.
@macmost2 жыл бұрын
Basically very complex math formulas to simulate randomness. Even flipping a coin isn't truly random. Or rolling dice. If you really want to dig in: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Random_number_generation

@@macmost Man, I didn't realize it was that in-depth. Thanks again, Gary. Seems like it's "good enough" for most uses, but definitely not all uses.

Hi, thanks for the video! Do you know how to random 25 different words using Numbers? I know Windows Excel can, but I don’t know if Apple Numbers can. I want to make a custom bingo cards that I can design and print them myself. I know I can go to bingo card generator sites to do that. But not sure how to save them and use them with my design. Please advise! Thanks!
@macmost Жыл бұрын
Sure it can. Probably with the same functions that those Excel documents use. You can use random functions with tables that contain word lists, or what I would do is have a table of words and use a column of random numbers to sort them, then have another table that pulls each word in the new shuffled order into spots in the bingo card.

@@macmost Thanks for replying me! I'll try that but if you could please make another video of that that would be great. No rush! Thank you!

I've used Terminal for a good many years to pick lottery numbers. That's really all their machine does, anyway. Somewhere through the fog of memory I recall reading that the Mac selects the number according to the position of the wavelength of electricity that's running through it. Don't know why I (or anyone) would remember that.

Is there a way to generate a list of random numbers of, let's say, 25 numbers with no duplicates? So all numbers would only be listed once.
@macmost2 жыл бұрын
That gets tricky. Do you have any programming experience? If not, it would be easier to just make more than 25 numbers in a spreadsheet and manually eliminate any duplicates.
@edmundhayes79822 жыл бұрын
@@macmost No programming experience (or maybe very little experience). Sometimes I need to generate random numbers for studies, assigning people to different arms of a study. I can't have duplicates. No worries, I will get my statistics people to help. The problem is they all use PCs. Thank you
@macmost2 жыл бұрын
@@edmundhayes7982 That's actually a random sort you want. You have the names in a table, then in another column use RANDOM to get random decimals. Then sort by those random numbers. Now they are in a random order, so just assign the first X people to one thing, the next X people to another, etc.
@edmundhayes79822 жыл бұрын
@@macmost I will give it a try. Thanks for all the help.

How can we generate random numbers with decimal
@macmost Жыл бұрын
Using which method? In Numbers? Describe the number you need and why as that would impact the solution.
@doctorarvindram Жыл бұрын
In number , say I would like random numbers from 45 to 90 with random decimals and it could represent time
@macmost Жыл бұрын
@@doctorarvindram Still not clear on what you want. So a random number between 45 and 90, but with decimals like 45.34783493, 76.92738 and 89.3943434?
@talmanl2 жыл бұрын
If the calculator’s RAND is between 0 and 1, then the way to get a random number between 1 and 6 would be 1 + 5*RAND. Not what you gave.
