There are a lot of contacts that I don't mind keeping, but don't want to scroll through on my phones and when I for example start using social media these people pop up as suggestions. I get that I can use two accounts, but if I can store everything in one account, without these contacts getting access to everything I do would be great. I saw there might be a way to add the contacts by phonenumber instead of email and if anyone knows how that works I would love to learn about that too.

Thanks for the video! You’ve given me some tips/ideas to clean up my contact list, which is a real mess. As for tips, I find it really helpful to set up things like Contacts as an app in Chrome with the option to “Open in Window” set. That way, when it opens, it does not get lost in a sea of Chrome tabs. If using Windows, the Chrome app can then be saved as a desktop shortcut, and from there can be pinned to the taskbar and the like.

Yes: I liked the instruction for adding a photo. Related question: isn't there a simple way to add "all" contact info from someone's signature to my contact list. Adding a name and email address is easy, but I want to capture all their contact info w/o having to do it manually. It's one of my bigger time wasters!! I'd rather it be "simple"....

I have an issue where a contact is not in contacts or other contacts with "I'll add contacts myself" ticked, and continues to pop up in a list of autofill contacts. I've deleted all conversations but whenever I type s and a, the contact I don't want is loaded first at the top. Little help. I've tried mostly everything but this persistent phantom contact doesn't seem to vanish. And I need it gone.

Yes, when sending an email you can add multiple groups in the To line.

You could use labels within Contacts to create separation amongst your contacts. But true folders may be more helpful like you suggest.

Hi Scott, I wanted to ask a question. When you add more than one google account to android, all the contacts sync together. I don't want that, I want them to stay separate like they would on a pc/mac in different profiles. Is there a workaround? Plus if I turn off sync for contacts then, when I compose an email, will I be able to see the name like I would on a mac?

Hmmm, I'm not aware of how to separate them on your Android contacts. But I believe you may not have to have sync turned on for Gmail to automatically present contact suggestions within the Gmail app.

In the Contacts list, find the contacts you want to merge. There are two ways to select contacts: Checkboxes: A checkbox will appear next to each contact's name. Click the boxes for the contacts you want to merge. Once you've selected the contacts, look for the "Merge" icon in the top right(looks like an up arrow with 2 ends). Click "Merge" to combine the selected contacts.

I have a few contacts that have multiple email address, work, other, personal etc. However, I don't remember which one is for which, that's why I have added labels next to them. So when I open their contact information, next to their email it is written work or other. My question is that when I'm composing an email, I input their contact, but the labels do not appear, I can't seem to tell which email is for which. I'm having to go in to my Google Contacts and send an email from there, which I don't want. Please could you give some advice. Thanks for creating these video's with your help I have learned a lot.

That's a great question. I'm not sure how it's exactly calculated, but I do know that it does seem to "feel a little off" at times.

How about the ability to select a company name and pick the individual from that company without selecting all of them? I have one company entry for my bank with five different individuals I need to communicate with, but when I search for a name in contacts, I get the one company entry, and it replaces my selected person with whoever happens to be listed first, which is rarely the person I want to communicate with. I'm retired. I can't afford a business account, but it appears Google took this functionality out of their legacy contacts manager and put it into a business product that has to be purchased separately from Google Docs.

Got a question. I'm to send an email to a person at a specific email address, whom that position was occupied by someone else. When I type in the persons name, it brings up his name, but then converts it to the other persons name. I've deleted all my contact info so that I have only two names left in my contact list. I wish there was a way to toggle off those bubbles. I find them distracting! I studied graphic design and we were taught to establish a hierarchy within a layout. My eyes are drawn immediately to these colourful circles instead of the contact names themselves. Which is not correct hierarchy. I also think that pictures are not necessary either. It would be great if there was an option to have no picture or bubble. Huawei have this option on their phones which I think is terrific. Less is more! Apple are of course the best at this but it doesn't mean Google can't tighten up their design ethos.

I spent this morning adding pictures to most all of my contacts. A similar question: Groups seem to be for sending messages to many people. I never do that. However, I often need to send one message to one person whose email is stored under a company name, and Google no longer lets me select the correct person. I pick a person and Google sees the company entry and replaces the recipient with whoever was randomly listed first. (Often because I allowed Google into nagging me into merging multiple contacts into one company contact entry.)

You can export the contacts list from the other 2 accounts and then import them into the primary account. You then could run the duplicate check afterward to clean up your list.
