Great vid. Finally, someone explaining the relationship between the shirt collar and the tie!. Now shopping for garments and accessories, & let's not forget the jacket, I can use my existing wardrobe effectively and know how to add to it. Too bad my local shops and tailors can not explain something so simple. I now have so many more dress options even with my existing wardrobe that future shopping will be a pleasure rather than a disappointing chore

Glad to you enjoyed the video and to hear you are a full Windsor knot wearer. A full Windsor is the most formal of knots, but doesn't always suit every occasion or individual, due to the size of the knot, the tie used or the shirt collar used👍🙂 it is always wise to have a selection of different knots in ones arsenal 👍🙂

@TheBritishDapper29 күн бұрын
Hi there, with a cutaway collar it can accommodate a full Windsor knot, but depending on the size of the gap you could use other less formal knots, but yes as a generalisation a full Windsor knot would go well with a cutaway collared shirt😊

@TheBritishDapper9 ай бұрын
Glad you enjoyed the video and found it of benefit. The origins of the Windsor knot, often called the Double Windsor and not to be confused with the Double knot, was named for the Duke of Windsor, Edward VIII. It was invented by and for King George V, his father, who favoured a bulky knot on a thick tie and loved the full look it gave him. 👍🙂
@Molach1012 жыл бұрын
This is such an excellent and informative video. I was a guest at a wedding the other day and, being in Highland dress, I had a tartan tie in wool. The things I've learned from a few such experiences with Highlandwear wool ties or "clan ties" are: 1. The most formal tie knot I can manage is a half windsor. A full windsor knot is too large. 2. It should ideally have a cutaway collar shirt. 3. The length of the tie won't matter so much as you will end up tucking your tie into your kilt, and you wear a waistcoat. 4. A tie bar would be awkward, especially with the waistcoat. 5. I can never get a dimple with a tie like that but I think that's fine Not sure if this information from me will be helpful but anyone reading this will notice how the good advice from Chris in this video can be applied across the board and across various dress codes
@TheBritishDapper2 жыл бұрын
love your comments, pleased you have gained so much from the videos🙂
@johnparnell85712 жыл бұрын
Good advice Alexander. Thank you. Having a waistcoat certainly makes life easier when it comes to covering up any unevenness in the length of the tie itself. It also allows you to tie a bigger knot if the collar will allow it (like Prince Michael of Kent). One additional lesson I have learnt the hard way is to always wash your hands with soap and hot water and then dry them before tying a tie. The natural oils on your fingers - even if your hands appear to be clean - can soon make the tie fabric grubby around the knot. Dry cleaning a tie these days isn't cheap - as I have recently discovered! Best wishes.
@TheBritishDapper2 жыл бұрын
Good advice John about having clean hands when tying your knot to prevent grubby stains, dry cleaning reduces the life of a tie as well🙂
@johnparnell85712 жыл бұрын
@@TheBritishDapper Good point, Chris. I recently had some ties dry cleaned - the first time I have done so for many years. The cost? £6.25p per tie.🤕 Even ones made of polyester stipulate dry cleaning. Having freshly washed hands in the first place is a much cheaper - and convenient - option.🙂

I just got my favorite tie back from the cleaners and I told them to please re-knot it because I don't know how to tie a tie and it's been so long I'll bet someone did it for me. Well, it got return untied, but that's probably their standard. I looked at those "10-second knot" videos and didn't like the looks. Your Half Windsor tutorial was straightforward and actually worked, and the shirt collar is a little big, but it will suffice, rather than going and trying the Full Windsor. I have a bunch of spare ties that are going to the cleaners now, and will try your Full Windsor tutorial when they return from the cleaners. Hi there, glad you enjoyed the video 🙂 to answer your question, it really depends on the level of formality, I find that the four in had or the thinker Victoria knots are great for less formal tie wear and the half & full Windsor knots are better from more formal wear. One question: Is it "proper" to wear the same tie - patterned or plain - for more than one day or on consecutive few days?
@TheBritishDapper Жыл бұрын
I would say it would be wise to have more than 1 tie if you are wearing a suit all the time. Ties do become worn over time, so it is better to rotate them, generally 4 ties is considered a good starting point. But if you can only afford 1 tie, then your options are limited until you add to it. as for having the same pattern or design, the tie is a way of showing your personality, many people only wear paisley ties, but have a range of colours and the same for people who only wear stripped ties. It is the range of colours that is important. Hope this helps you🙂

I enjoyed the video. It helped me to tie the tie for my eight year old grandson whom i was left alone with when the parents were away. The first time it was difficult. I think at his school they noted that the tie was not done well.

Hi Patricia, glad you enjoyed the video and it helped you succeed, it does take practice to prefect the knots shown in the video, but glad to hear you persevered 👍🙂

As an uninitiated tie fellow was surprised to hear that the dimple was a desirable trait. I'd say that if I were to wear a tie it would be with the Half Windsor or the Victoria, since those seem to have less attention on the knot visually.

Glad you enjoyed the video and the half Windsor and the Victoria are great choice of knots. 👍🙂

I hate ties, I promise, or so I thought. Not that it mattered much so far (French woman here). Now, for some reason (I came across the phrase "double Windsor") I started watching videos about how to knot them. And here I am, I've watched the entire video and loved it. ^^ Very complete, very interesting, love the bit about larger men, love the accent, I even thought some of these ties looked great, lol. Well done. (Now I'm going to look if you've got a video about waistcoats, I do love waistcoats. Lucky I'm on holiday.^^)

Thank you for your positive feedback, I have briefly touch on waistcoats in other videos, but not covered them specifically, but having received your feedback - I will do a video about them 🙂

@@TheBritishDapper Your method of teaching is so simple to understand, you should have been in the classroom because if you teach someone and the person could not understand you then they may be something wrong with that person. I wish you good luck in all what you are teaching 🍀👍
