I did this 2 weeks ago. Replaced the top of my bag with G425Max D,3,5,7,&9 with i500 6-P Shot 76 on Monday. Best round in 6 years. Easy swing=high, straight ball flight with a hop and stop. Consistent 15 yard gaps. Lefty here, currently bagging the Cobra one-length and it's been a game changer for me. I carry the 4H (220 yd max) and 3H (240 yd max) in one-length. I carry a PING G425 2H (265 yd max) because I've had a better experience with hybrids vs. fairway woods. I mainly use my PING 2H off the tee, but I like the versatility & confidence I have in it from the fairway if I'm outside the yardage of my Cobra hybrids on a Par 5.

I'm the guy the driving iron is meant for. 1- for some reason I've always struck irons well and struggle with fairway woods. 2- it's always windy in Nebraska and controlling ball flight and keeping the ball low is at a premium. 3- I like versatility, shaping shots, hitting stingers, could never get that from a hybrid. Been playing a Srixon 3 Utility for about a year now and loving it. Love the comparison videos. When I was young I never realized that my 3-iron and 5-wood were basically going the same yardage in different ways. I was wasting valuable real estate in my bag! 🤦🏼♂️

this part of the bag is nearly always course/weather dependent- so you should have the option of either ( imo :-)) in the boot

This is the correct answer, surprised Ian didn't mention it. 5W all day on a softer parkland course, good off the tee for dog legs where driver is too long, better stopping power on the greens, height to get over trees etc. 3i/Driving iron on a firm links course where the wind is up, you want that lower ball flight that will run on the fairway, and you can run it up to the greens. 5W just has far too high a ball flight with the wind on this sort of course.

I’ve recently replaced my 4i with a hybrid and I couldn’t be happier. No only do I hit way more consistent and accurate shots but I’m even way more confident playing the club out of suboptimal lies. I think it depends on the course. For off the tee, if you’re on a tight, tree-lined course, sometimes it’s better to use a driving iron to hit a low bullet with a flat face instead of a rounded faced hybrid or wood. However, if the course is wet, more open, or you’re not using this club off the tee as much as approach shots, then go for a hybrid or fairway wood.

3W, 5W, DI for me. When my old set finally got beaten up enough to leave behind, my replacement iron set didn't come with a 3i, so buying a driving/utility iron was a no-brainer. 5W is easier to get airborne and a bit longer, but indeed for lower shots in heavy wind, long punch shots, and some drives into tight fairways the DI is just the ticket.

This video is exactly where I’m at right now, 3 handicap so I’m not as good as Matt but a pretty decent golfer and I’m exactly where he is with this spot in the bag. Sim2 udi Ventus black 95x, sim2 rescue GD DI 85x and ping g425 7wood Accra tz5 (I think) 85x all have been rotating in and out of my bag. I’ve pretty much illuminated the driving iron due to same window as you discussed and it’s a back and forth between the 3 hybrid and 7wood. Numbers are very similar to Matt 4 iron carry is 232 on last gapping session and 3 hybrid is 245 on the dot with the loft weakened a hair. Recently got the 7wood so I haven’t had it gapped yet but just from my eye it’s around the same 245 mark. 7wood is definitely easy to hit and can be a little hindering when the wind picks up Vs the hybrid but for me is a touch easier than the hybrid. I’ll be very curious to see y’all’s next video with this when you build the 5wood to a more 7wood specked club for Matt. In reality depending on course you play if you don’t have but maybe 1 or 2 shots requiring that 270ish 3 wood shot it’s almost beneficial to pull 3 wood out of the bag and have the hybrid and 5 wood in instead. That’s another battle I’m facing with my set up lol. Now you have two good windows at similar yardages with the choice of flying the 5 wood 10 yards further if needed but also the super high fade with the 5 wood if needed. Ahhh the choices! Cheers guys keep up the good content 🤙🏻

@@paqman78 Aye, it's not just hype, but it is definitely something you need to think about. With so many bags featuring a gap wedge these days there isn't really much space left, and the driving iron and 7 wood both have very definite good and bad sides. Though I think personally a 7w is maybe more competition to a 4 iron for me than it would to a driving iron. Driving Irons/Long Irons are great when you hit them well, the problem is inconsistency, when off they will be way way off. I stay away from them! I just feel that the standard length of most fairway woods these days is just too long, so I have been thinking along the same lines as Ian and I have recently thought about trying a 5 wood at 41" because I play in the wind quite often and I tend to launch most 7 woods way too high.

Thankfully I'm in a happy position: My iron set is old school enough that a gap wedge doesn't have a place in it (the spacing between 9, PW and SW doesn't really have gaps, and I can throw a lobber at the end quite freely), but it doesn't have a 3 iron either, so I can put in a driving iron for the 3 iron slot, and still have room to put in a 5 wood. And as a plus, I really don't like hybrids, so that doesn't enter the discussion. I love both the driving iron and the 5 wood to bits. They might not be terribly different with the distance (tho the 5W is longer), but they have very different flights, and I have plenty of situations where I one is a better choice than the other, so both have a place.

Good vid. Interesting results. Wonder why you didn’t try to change club angle? Too much height and potential for wind issues? But wouldn’t the 7 wood put you into that same situation? Interested as I’m thinking of a seven wood. Thanks

Any chance we can get some TXG polos or 1/4 zips for purchase in the online store? 😬

I play the X-Forged UT in the 21 degree and then the Sim 2 5 wood. If I feel like I need more of a shot to attack a pin but i’m in between distances i just choke up the 5 wood and it works perfectly

Is it just me or the camera focus on Ian been blurry? I recall videos in the past like the Ventus black, blue red comparison looked clearer. Am I crazy?

I started with a driving iron and 5 wood (pxg proto) play a 22 hybrid instead of a 4 iron. Realized the driving iron was no value - So added a 3 wood (srixon ) Drive 270 on average - 3 wood gives me 240-250 gapping , 5 wood 220-330, hybrid 200-210. Hit my 5 irons about 190. It’s so much simpler now

Help/Question if you see this. Weekend golfer again after 20 years. Do you recommend Brand set wedges or “custom” wedges that have pickable grinds etc. Love the info and videos 👍👍👍.

You gave me a good idea to work on. Now I am wondering if you could put a 7 wood head on a heavy hybrid shaft for more consistency .If you could reply I would appreciate it.

Was at the range today, I had a father and young son to my right, both were lefties (team hockey baseballs hats on their heads). Had an older guy to my left, another hockey player lefty (we chatted), and then 3 teenagers left of the old guy, obviously all hockey kids - and all 3 were lefties. That's 6 Lefties and me - the Right-Handed hockey player. Only in Canada would you see this.

Did the 7 wood build length in to a 5 wood head ever happen? Please link the video if so as I’m excited to see what you come up with. 👍🏼

Does the stz 5w not come in Lefty? I have it in 3w and 5w right handed.... best fairway wood I’ve ever owned by a country mile.

This is a good set up / condition topic.. I love a driving iron but only when its hot and windy.. for 80-90% of my rounds you couldn't pry the 5w out of my bag w dynamite.. bomb a shorter par 5 from almost any lie, toe it in for shots out of thin rough, and I have about a 99% expectation of a quality strike

I found the 5W is very versetile 200-230 yrds depending on swing.

I have a high swing speed as well. I go driver at 8*, 5w turned down to 17.25, then 3 iron at 20*. Tried the hybrid but I find it really hot and went way to far for the gap I was trying to get. Thinking about trying it again. Maybe a 4 hybrid to go into the 3 iron spot. Probably use it more than I do the 5w. Mostly a tee club so want something reliable

Perfect video been thinking a 5 wood or 3 hybrid. Playing off 7.
