Those etched jeweled loti are going to be insanely expensive. They're in the milking phase of the product where they extract as much value as they can while damaging the brand long term. Its just to make as much as possible before the turn hurts them. It happens with many many products and industries, build up, change it to maximize value, move on to the next product after you've pillaged all you can. Leaves nothing for the brand in the future but you got your money now so why care?

Not sure you really know what you're talking about. The brand is fine. Magic works in cycles. They are okay losing customers because statistically they come back. You have to remember the average MTG customer doesn't care about card value. Most ppl don't buy to sell, or invest, etc. The majority of players just collect what they want, and occasionally play casually with friends. Almost everyone engages with the game that way. A very small percentage make competitive decks, compete even in small local tournaments, or open thousands of dollars of product. The one part of your post I can get behind with respect to brand damage is the LGS model is getting it elbow deep. That has more to do with Jeff bezos and the general slide in our culture toward going out less, but Wizards pricing their boxes at insane prices and removing MSRP is pretty shitty and feels like they are trying to hasten the death of the LGS... Which may be the case if they project profits would increase if their revenue streams were further consolidated.
